“Disappointing”
Reviewed 22 July 2013

I stayed here for 2 nights in July 2013. I was disappointed. I expected more from a 4 star hotel in light of other 4 star hotels I have stayed in in Ho Chi Minh city.

Pros:-

- The hotel is in a great central location for the main city sights.

- The 16th and 17th floor resteraunts have great views over the city.

- The bed was comfortable. In fact the room itself was comfortable, if on the small side. It was clean. There were no issues with external traffic noise (the city is noisy) or from other rooms.

Negatives:-

- The food was awful. I had 2 breakfasts in the hotel during my stay, both of which were pretty much inedible. One lunch was adequate. One dinner was horrendous!

- The reception staff were unhelpful. They weren't rude, but they certainly weren't helpful!

- The bathroom had the strangest/most useless shower/bath combo in it! It was a bath/spa bath/shower all in one unit which came complete with lights/multiple spray jets/jacuzzi bath jets/lights to turn the water different colours/in shower radio and cd unit/2 separate key pads to operate all the different settings together with multiple dials/taps. All of which were completely unnecessary. Oh, and no instructions on how to use the thing so trying to work out how to get a basic shower in the thing was a nightmare! A waste of money and time and incongrous given the style of the rest of the hotel and room.

I don't think the hotel deserves its 4 star rating. And don't eat there!

We were really disappointed with this hotel and even considered trying to find an alternative. The overriding problem is that the hotel is tired. Whilst the reception staff are well trained and attentive, the others we encountered in the bar and the restaurant were untidy, inattentive and lacked the standard I would expect to see in a four star hotel. I would go so far as to say this was the worst hotel we stayed in in a month of travelling in Vietnam. Our room was fine, although did not seem very clean. The tables in the bar and restaurant were grubby. The carpet in the lifts was stained. The breakfast was not good - fruit that tasted as though someone had cut it with a garlic knife, boiled eggs that looked green, undrinkable coffee. Definitely not a four star experience.

Very disappointed in the room size and standard offered in this hotel.
Find it hard to believe the **** rating displayed in the lobby.
Lobby itself is quite lovely, very clean with exquisite chandelier
Consierge attentive and helpful
Location - excellent if wanting proximity Ben than market area

Service - average, although somehow staff managed to "lose" our power adaptor when we changed rooms (because it was too small)
Room service - 6 - 2330hrs. Salad, pasta, spring roll approx 250VND

Breakfast - poor for western palate. Mainly local foods - rice, noodle, with usual egg station. Bacon especially rubbery (even for Asian standards), bread - white only, 2 x cereals, choice of 4 seasonal fresh fruits, and 4 x cakes. To top it off, there was no room to move between tables, and one day I was asked to "share table with strangers" as there was no other room. Apparently they sometimes open the nearby restaurant area for breakfast, but not on this occasion.
View from breakfast area is great as it is on 16th floor

Pool - similar size to backyard pool. Very clean and great city view as it's on 17th floor
Fitness centre - consists of a couple of older style pieces of equipment next to the pool

Room - poor. Very outdated fittings, and the smallest double room I've stayed in - approx 50cm between sides of bed and wall, 1m between foot end and furniture.
Bed - king dbl, firm, clean linen, and comfortable
A/C reads 16 - no doubt thermometer would read much higher. Ask for second swipe card so you can leave it on while you're out, otherwise be prepared to wait to cool down from Saigon heat.
Bathroom - again very small, approx 50cm space between door swing and shower screen. Shower is all-in-one type shower and spa bath unit. Although if you sit in it as a bath, can't straighten legs (unless under about 130cm). To top this experience off, our power blew out when we turned spa pump on. We called maintenance who attended to it promptly. However, it blew again when we tried a second time - gave up trying by this time, idea of electrical fault in shower in foreign country fed my paranoia.....
Final disappointment with room was that swipe card failed and we had to go fetch new one on two occasions.
Our Vietnamese friends visited our room. Their comment was "no not 4* only 2*"

Although some aspects were acceptable, did not come up to our expectations 4* accommodation. Therefore would not return or recommend to friends.

I was very surprised by this hotel. I booked it because i read good reviews, and my experience was in line with that. Good breakfast, clean and nice room (just a little small, but big enough) and central located. An absolute recommendation

We stayed at the Golden Central Hotel for 3 nights during our stay in Ho Chi Minh! The room was clean, the service was brilliant and the location was really good - round the corner from the main market and close to lots of good restaurants and tourist offices! What made the hotel for us was the rooftop pool! It was clean and the friendly waiters would come and take your order at the pool! Would definitely recommend this hotel!

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights. It is located one block away from Ben Thanh Markets. It is a four star hotel and the service is good. Staff speak limited English but we seemed to get by quite well. The rooms are good and very clean. The breakfast buffet was included in our price and it was also good. The pool on the roof is quite small but very clean and refreshing after a long day out walking. The room we stayed in had only one accessible power point so charging up various electrical devices became a bit of a shuffling act. The hotel has wifi in all rooms and this worked well most times although on occasion the service seemed to drop in and out randomly. But all up, a good hotel to stay at.

Staff are very friendly with good English. The room was spacious and clean although the view from the room was not pretty, looking out onto a wall. Great central location Ben Tahn markets , shops, reunification palace and many other attractions were all in walking distance. Nice dining room and breakfast and meals during the day were reasonably priced and tasty. Great views overlooking the city day and night from the roof top restaurant. I didn't enter the pool but it looked very clean , although a little small. If you are going to do any tours then XO tours is a must. It's the most amazing experience of my life time. Girls pick you up in full Vietnamese costume on the back of a motor bike and show you the city, either with food or without. It was that good I did the foodie tour and then chose the city tour two days later. This hotel is such a delight , very high standards, value for money and highly recommended.
