“Safe & good house.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

The hotel is really good located. From the mainbackpackerstreet it's hidden in a little alley. We really enjoyed the little alley and it looks like your living between the locals. The people around the hotel and the family are very friendly. Before hidden off to Saigon we heard terrible stories about the safety of ourself and our stuff. In this hotel it felt, even though they don't have security camera's, really safe. There is always someone home and you don't have to leave your key a the hotel. The mainbackpackerstreet is full of people who want to sell you something, that was a bit annoying. In the hotel they have cheap, but good, tours! Sometimes it was a bit noisy but in the middle of the night it's oke. The sheets weren't that clean, so we sleept in our sleepingbag. We didn't mentioned it, but if you do I think they will change it for you. We didn't have changed our towels and no cleaning in the room, but instead it's cheap. So that didn't border us at all! For this price it's a good guesthouse with a good location!

Room Tip: Our room was first floor on the right with balcony :)

We felt very ripped off after staying one night at Than Guesthouse and can't recommend it at all! For 15 $ there are much nicer places in the area, the room we stayed in isn't worth more than 10 $. The room was very tiny, to the point where it was difficult to move around with two people and luggage. It was rundown and shabby, towels and bedsheets were stained. The Bathroom was wet when we arrived and there was no toilette paper. The place is very noisy from the family running the place and living there. That makes it an authentic experience and the one family member that speaks english was helpful, but why the children had to eat on the floor of the tiny lobby and we had to step over them when we went out is beyond me.

The place is a little hard to find if you try and walk there from the bus, it's in the middle of the backpacker district so really central, but tucked down an alley that looks like is just local housing. Most places around will direct you.
We arrived early and they let us in and up to our room which was great, we had three single beds which is a bonus when you book a triple. Room was very clean, but not very big so we were a bit cramped. Only problem was a very strong smell of urine in the bathroom on one of the days, think it was the drain as it lingered for a while. There's a lot of stairs in this place and they won't help you with your bags so make sure you're feeling strong!
The staff were very nice, but they were very very pushy when it came to us booking activities with them. We asked around about the cu chi tunnels and found they were all the same price so we booked that through them, but immediately after they were asking us where we go next. They asked that every time we saw them and said we could book the bus with them. We found somewhere better (time and price suited us better) to book it, and felt very uncomfortable telling the owners we'd already booked the bus because they just kept pestering us to book it with them, right until the morning of check out.
Other than that they were very nice, warned us about keeping our bags safe when we were out.
All in all, cheap and good location but I wouldn't stay there unless I was keeping to a strict budget.

All in all thanh guesthouse is a great place to spend a few nights which exploring HCM. Hidden down a side street in the lovely Pham Ngu Laos district it offers quiet rooms in the middle of the mayhem.

Our double room was large and came equipped with air con,tv and a fridge for a very reasonable price. When a light blew the staff ensured that it was fixed immediately, reflecting their overall helpful manner.

Only downside was the attention to detail in terms of cleanliness. The room cannot be called dirty by any means, but easily reached surfaces were coated in dust and the sheets were stained in obvious locations. To travellers who can overlook matters like this Thanh is a very solid choice for a base in HCM.

Great value, amazing location right on the main back packers strip but just tucked away so it wasn't noisy at night. The staff were so friendly all the time. The beds were comfortable and clean and our air conditioning was really good. We had a decent tv and fridge in our room too, it was so much more than what we had expected. I definitely reccomend this place and would 100% come here again, whether you're backpacking or with your partner.

My girlfriend and I stayed 2 nights in a double room on the second floor.
We booked the room online and paid $17 per night which is way overpriced.

The room was new and relatively clean but way too small.
We're not looking for big rooms but with our 2 backpacks there wasn't much floor space left.

The wet room was really small too but we don't complain about that.

The door of the room was partially made a glass.
From our bed we could see the light from the stairway but also the light inside the opposite room. We ended up sleeping with night masks as our room stayed too bright.

The first night there was a karaoke in the street and therefore in our room too as the soundproofing is inexistant. The karaoke stopped at 3am and I eventually fell asleep.

The room we slept in wasn't worth the price we paid.
In another comment the person payed $9 per night which is fair enough.

We walked down the street and found a cheaper and bigger room.

We wouldn't stay again at the Thanh Guest House.
