Friends and I stayed at The Pheonix 74 Hotel for a total of 1 week over Christmas. The location is great, you can't get more central, 5 mins walk to the market, 15 mins walk from the war museum and smack in the middle of the main backpacker area. However we were dissapointed with the lack of cleanliness in the hotel. Our room (a triple) had filthy, marked walls basically all surfaces were dirty or dusty. The airconditioner was broken, there was no wall hook for the shower nozzle, which was broken anyway and one of our pillows wasn't even a pillow but just an old blanket folded up and shoved into a pillow case. We didn't receive any toilet paper, only 2 towels for 3 of us, the bathroom tiles were mouldy and our neighbour next door would smoke weed every night that stunk up our room and the hallway we shared. But with saying all that, it was quite cheap, we didn't complain because you get what you pay for. The staff seemed nice enough and like much of Vietnam I assume they are a family and not professional cleaners etc. so we didn't complain. However if you aren't willing to sacrifice hygiene for price, then this isn't the place for you. I don't think we would recommend Pheonix 74 but it still had LCD tv, free ok wifi and a place to rest your head. Not the best but ok for location + price.

Guy at reception is a legend, he sorted out a dodgy taxi driver who wanted double what the meter said. Also great value for money. Definitely recommend this hotel to people who are travelling on a budget.

Poenix 74 is very well located in the tourist area of the city. Internet did not work in the rooms, but they let me connect from the office near reception. The bathrooms were not very clean and has no restaurant. The rooms were all right with air conditioning. There is much difference between the rooms, I recommend checking a couple of them before making you chek in. A basic hotel to spend a few days with no frills. I think you could find better hostels for the same price.

I am staying here for 3 weeks. The price was about 10 or 11 bucks per night. I like this hotel very much. What do you need from a hotel? For me, it's a shower, A/C, wifi, TV, small bed and a mini fridge. The Phoenix has all this right in the middle of the most vibrant part of the city. True, some things in the hotel are a bit run down, but that's certainly not a dealbreaker for me. The young staff are all friendly and polite. I would recommend this hotel to easy going people who aren't too fancy - no room service here - just a basic room in the heart of Saigon.

I stayed the third time at Phoenix74 last week.

Room: cheap prices and everything I need: clean, aircon, window, quiet if window is closed. I had a good sleep always.

Service: After nine years from my last stay, the family atmosphere is gone and the service is not that good as it was before. Don't expect too much, but if you ask you'll get everything you need. You are not annoyed with tour bookings or anything else.

Location: Bui Vien changed a lot, it's a party mile now, busy and noisy half the night. If you like to go for cheap drinks, you'll find them. Most restaurants in this area are traveler places and overpriced, there are some typical food stalls left. City center is easy to reach by walking or bus.
