This is a great hotel with a history. It also has it's wonderful rooftop bar, a great place to relax and enjoy the view and the food after a busy day of sightseeing. We had a great room looking out over the park. Service was very good.

My wife and I stayed at the Rex for 3 nights in early March 2012. We booked a room in the new wing and we were not disappointed as it was large and well appointed. The real plus for this hotel is its location, within walking distance of most of the main attractions of HCMC. The buffet breakfast was very good and the iconic rooftop terrace was an excellent venue for an evening cocktail. Apart from breakfast we only ate a couple of times in the coffee shop on the ground floor where the food was acceptable but not outstanding. There are however many good restaurants in HCMC if you want to venture out. Service was efficient and non obtrusive. We would be happy to return to the Rex.

Room Tip: Go for a room in the new wing on an upper floor

Booked the Rex Hotel because it features in many biographies about the war and this central point was where many of the correspondents met after a busy day at the front.

This is a 5 star establishment according to the guide books but not as we know it!! The entrance lobby and ground floor public areas are very inviting and 5(ish) star but the rooms are adequate but they are not 5 star luxurious as one might expect but nevertheless quite comfortable.

The free wifi is quite difficult to get working properly and the speed is just slightly faster than tortoise. The outdoor bar, is on the 5th floor, through the restaurant, and whilst not the cheapest beer prices in town, does offer spectacular views of the main square and one can easily spend many an hour up there just watching life go by.

I stayed 3 nights and I have to say the place grew on me and I would come back and stay here again but it is essential to ensure that your room is in the new wing.

Staff are efficient and helpful and they are eager to please.

Can't complain about the hotel's location - right smack in city center. The rooms are spacious and comfortable but the constant repair noise is quite disruptive if you happen to be back in your room for afternoon nap. They assume that you're out all day so they do repairs. The buffet breakfast is a nice treat with very extensive selection.

It's really a 5-star lobby with 4-star rooms but by any standards this place is very comfortable and in a great location.

Based on other reviews, we went for a room in the new wing and ended up with a great view over the impressive garden square out front. Plenty of motorbike traffic to add that HCM atmosphere but the sound didn't penetrate the closed window at night.

There are 2 good pools on the roof to recover from the HCM humidity and the kitch roof bar is an absolute hoot for evening drinks.

We booked two rooms - a premier room and a junior suite, both in the new wing.
Positives - The rooms were beautiful, large very clean and comfortable. (Suite was huge and lovely) Really a peaceful and relaxing place to return to after the melee of Saigon.
Amazing buffet breakfast - all fresh and delicious food and juices
Lovely roof top pool, great place to relax and cool historic roof top bar.
Really good location, within walking distance of most attractions and good shopping.
The older wings are kind of cool in a 70's kitsch kind of way but can see they would be pretty gloomy to stay in.
Negatives - The website said the junior suite had a king bed and sofa bed and we booked it so that our children could sleep in the same rooms as us. However, there was a tiny sofa NOT a bed and we were told that my daughter should stay in our bed and we would have to pay for a bed for our son (12). The member of staff who dealt with us had no interest in helping us, only in us paying extra. She told us that a sofa was the same thing as a sofa bed (it was tiny!) but nonetheless wouldn't agree to any bedding! She even sat and argued the age of my daughter with me - even after I produced her passport! (She is 10 so was able to stay 'free'). Only after my husband said we would pay for 1 extra bed but not 2 was there any attempt to help us. Note, we booked on the hotel's website and booked the room for 4 people.
Secondly, we booked a car from the airport (Don't! A bona fide taxi costs US$7, the hotel charges US$40) the same staff member said they had received no e mail from me confirming our flight time and again seemed more concerned to show me photocopies of the hotel's policy and initial e mail. Sorry but where did my 2 e mails sent via the hotel website disappear to?!
We paid a lot for 2 rooms for extended family and felt that this was a pretty poor reception.

Room Tip: Definitely book a room in the new wing if you want the 5 star experience the hotel claims. These roo...
