“Good location for first stay - disappointing rooms/service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 November 2013

As our first hotel in Ho Chi Minh, we couldn't have hoped for a better location. However, we were disappointed with our club room. On check in there was a mix up with a booking through another website and they tried to charge us extra for a club room on one night - sending on a copy of confirmation email showed that we'd already paid for this but didn't get much of an apology. Generally the staff in the club room were not as friendly as other hotels we stayed in on our trip.

The setting of the Saigon Saigon bar is fantastic but why do they have a salsa band playing? It seemed really strange and they were so loud that it spoiled the experience for us.

Breakfast is great in the main restaurant, really good selection. The spa was also fantastic, good treatment and some excellent offers.

Location is good and our room was lovely but the service is a bit lacklustre. The concierge was downright unhelpful. We asked him to book a taxi to collect us from the train station at our onward destination and first he refused then he said he couldn't get through even though it's a national firm with a website.

Same in the roof top bar, lovely views but we sat without drinks for quite a while.

Checkout was quick and efficient though.

Dear HodgyNorthumberland,

Thank you for your note about our location and rooms. We are disappointed you felt our Concierge service was not as it should be. I have followed up your feedback and would like to clarify the taxi booking situation. Our Concierge did attempt to contact the taxi company numerous times. However due to the remote location of your destination the company you requested don’t offer a fully manned reservations office. They also attempted to book your collection at their local office here in Ho Chi Min City unsuccessfully.

I apologise that we did not meet your service expectation on your recent visit and do hope you will have the opportunity to return to the Caravelle Hotel in the not-too-distant future.

Kind regards

Beautiful hotel right in the heart of what is happening in Saigon overlooking the Opera House.
Chose this hotel because of the history, the roof top bar was good even though crowded.
Rooms comfortable, great pool. Hairdressers excellent. Spa therapist clipped my cuticle hence sore toe for part of my trip which was annoying that can happen I guess, a little more training would help. Excellent breakfast. Front desk staff were helpful.

My first impression wasn't that good. Serive when arriving was so so and the hotel could use a renovation. However the hotel grew on me and in the end I left very happy. The roof bar is a bonus and the overall service and quality turned out to be really good.
A bonus is the location with plenty of things to do in the surroundings of the hotel. Works both for business and family.
The gym was very well equipped even though the space itself could have been a bit bigger

Hotel has a great location, all main attractions are a short walk away. Also the room was very clean and comfortable.

However, compared to other hotels we have stayed in, in a Vietnam (including HCMC) i believe the hotel to be overpriced. The decor is dated and the front desk service was poor. We were checked into a room on the 12th floor, when we arrived at the room we realised the down lifts did not work and were told to walk. We eventually moved to another room on the 8 th floor but this took some negotiating! Whilst waiting at reception a couple walked in off street and asked for tariffs, they were told to look on internet! When they challenged this the lady behind the counter reluctantly pulled out a piece of paper with tariffs on.

Pool was good, although took 20mins for beer to arrive after ordering.

All in all ok, the most expensive hotel we stayed in in a Vietnam with the lowest level of service but comfortable.

We stayed at Caravelle mainly because of the name of the hotel in town, "it's a must in Saigon". Well, for me it is clear the hotel has seen better days, but still it is a good place to saty, and definitely has a great location.

Rooms a bit dated, service is ok, roof bar is fine. We were not very impressed by the place, but this doesn't mean it is not a great hotel. Still, I don't think we would come back and probably go for other alternatives. It may also feel a bit overpriced, obviously not compared to other cities as Vietnam remains quite affordable.

Room Tip: High floor, without a doubt.

Caravelle hotel, a good surprise in Saigon

We recently spent 3 night in 2 stays at the Caravelle hotel in Saigon and it was a very nice surprise to us.
The hotel is located in the center or town, close to shopping areas (The Ho Chi Minh City Champs Elysees) and tourist spots (the Cathedral, the river, the central post office, the market) but off busy roads so we had top quality sleep.

We booked a club room, including all day soft drinks and evening time cocktail (which turn out to be a full size dinner), for a very decent price compared to what big chains are offering in HCM.

On our return a week later we were upgraded to a suite as our now favorite room was not available: these guys know how to make you happy.
I would classify the Caravelle, as a European four star hotel, it is not overly fancy and you may find the decoration a bit dated, but sleep quality is very good, amenities are above standard and I have nothing to say about cleanliness.

During our stay there we also visited, the Saigon Saigon roof top bar. It’s a bit of a funny place: a mix of tourists, business men, locals, and more. Have a try. The view is superb, food is a mix of local and western, prices are ok.

Our biggest disappointment is the “Reflections” restaurant, the top end eatery there. Probably no need to blame the restaurant itself, but if you are in Saigon, there is absolutely no need to go in such place. Book a Club room floor, have a few drinks and snacks and head up to Saigon Saigon for you main course and couple more drinks, you’ll feel more jolly.

Anyway thank you very much Caravelle, next time we visit Saigon we’ll sure stay with you.

Room Tip: Book a room at the club floor
