“Top marks for this hotel in Hue.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2013

My wife and I have recently returned from a week tour of Vietnam and Cambodia with a group of thirty one others. We stayed in ten different hotels over this time, all 4 star, with one 5 star in Vung Tau. Our three nights spent at the Saigon Morin were wonderful. We had a large corner room overlooking the main intersection, but it was very well sound proofed. The historic ambiance is enhanced with many historic old photographs adorning the corridor walls, One room near us had a brass plaque stating that Charlie Chaplin and his wife Claudette Colbert stayed in that particular room . I'll wager it is far better now, than when they stayed there. The location is excellent; right opposite a night market on the Perfume River. Outdoor dining under the trees for breakfast in central courtyard was also a pleasure. Cannot fault this 4 star hotel in any way. Being centrally located it is easy walking to many of the sights in this delightful and friendly city.

Room Tip: Select a street view room overlooking the Perfume River and you will not be disappointed

This hotel was paradise to us - after spending 26 hours on trains (first an overnight train from Sapa to Hanoi, arriving 5:00am, then another local train leaving at 6:00am to Hue - absolutely disgusting, dirty, smoky train - even with our own cabin - not recommended!) we were tired, dirty and very grumpy. All that was forgotten the moment we stepped inside the Hotel Saigon Morin. It is a very short taxi drive from the train station and you are greeted with smiley, friendly staff, who offer you cool towels and drinks as they immediately make you comfortable.

The room was gorgeous - everywhere the hotel has been immaculately restored to its former glory and the care taken shows. We booked a Premium City Deluxe twin and it was well worth the small amount extra. In fact - it is a very inexpensive hotel considering its quality - amazing value. The room was large, beautifully decorated and set out, with 2 x queen beds. The bathroom was huge with a lovely big bath and separate shower (though we couldn't get the water to flow enough to fill the bath). There is a wooden screen between the bathroom and the room which is quirky but cool. The views from the huge window overlooking the river where gorgeous. When we arrived we didn't want to move - so ordered room service and just sat in our lovely room and absorbed the history and opulence. And all this was before we had even explored the rest of the hotel!

The courtyard where they serve breakfast is just lovely - and the breakfast was amazing. There is a pool which we used heaps that was beautifully maintained and a perfect way to cool off. We didn't use any of the other restaurants in the hotel, so can't vouch for them. Our only regret is that we only got to spend 2 nights here - another would have been lovely. Hue itself is a gorgeous town - easy to get around, lots to see and a lovely feel to it. Well worth getting a taxi out to the tombs to explore further afield.

Room Tip: Worth getting a room with a city river view - the lights at night are lovely - and there is no probl...

This historic hotel changed hands many times during the war, and was used as a HQ by both sides. Every room was damaged. Well, you would not know it now. This is a wonderfully restored property and even if you don't stay here, you need to go and at least have lunch or dinner in the courtyard, this is not to be missed.

Breakfast in the inner courtyard of the Saigon Morin Hotel, under the canopy of a 100 year old Indian almond tree, is not to be missed. Surrounded by the white hotel walls, the red of the courtyard umbrellas coupled with the feeling of green and shadow makes for a wonderful stop. The breakfast buffet is extensive, the coffee good and the feeling of well-being much appreciated. A spot to look forward to when on a road trip.

The Saigon M orin Hotel was constructed in 1905 during the French occupation of Vietnam and when the Hue Citadel was the headquarters of the French military and government. Clearly with its location so close to the seat of power the hotel was a preferred location for visiting dignitaries and the decor and overall feel of understated opulence and class reflect this. The whole structure syill has this subdued air but is showing signs of stress and the need of some renovation. The bathrooms in the suites are old fashioned with a fairly large deep sided bathtub and there is a tricky little step from the siote to the bathroom which could trip up the unsuspecting elderly guest. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with all the expected fittings and services available. as with other places in Vietnam the Wifi connection works well.

We had an early departure (5 AM) to get back to Danang for a flight to Hanoi - the hue Airport was closed for renovations in May and probably for several months. The hotel staff very kindly prepared a breakfast box for us to have on our journey back to Danang - it was adequate and most welcome.

The reception staff were very pleasant and efficient and helpful in giving advice about where to eat. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel.

As I mentioned the location is right in the centre of everything in Hue sitting on the bank of the Perfume River close to the jetties where Dragon boat rides to the Pagoda and the Royal Tombs can be purchased. You would need to allow at least half a day to do this (We unfortunately did not have time for this activity because our itinerary only gave us 14 hours in Hue). The main road from the South to Hanoi is about 50 meteres from the hotel entrance and a major bridge takes the highway over the Perfume River. It is attractively lit at night and was easily visible from our seconfd floor room.

The road along the river bank takes you to another bridge that crosses the river and takes you to the Hue Citadel.and the Old Town. The best way to appreciate this part of Hue is on foot - but it is quite a long walk particularly if you decide to circunnavigate the Citadel and wander in the streets of the Old Town. You would need to allow a good half day for this excursion.

Because of our short time in Hue we opted to take a cyclo ride to the Citadel - it was good but beware - the cyclos are notorious for ripping you off. We were unmercifully scammed by the two guys who gave us the tour. You must negotiate a price before getting on board and a generous fee id 50000 dong for an hour per person.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel overlook the Perfume River but also have the attendant trafic no...

Hotel Saigon Morin has large comfortable rooms with all the facilities you would expect. The staff were pleasant and helpful in booking a bus to Da Nang (the airport in Hue is still closed). The breakfast had a large selection of meals, with the omelettes and homemade yoghurt being particularly good. Great views over the river and park from the rooms. There was a food festival across the road alongside the river with great inexpensive dinners (and 50 cent local beers!!!). A large swimming pool was enjoyable after the heat of the day.

Room Tip: The top floor has nice views over the river
