The Thien Mu Pagoda is an active Buddhist Monastery and was built in 1601. It's set in lovely gardens and is worth a visit, mainly because of the ornate architecture.

Nice Buddhist temple to visit. This temple is located at the bend of the river. Nice view from the top. Good to go in the morning when the main hall is still open. When we went around 1pm, the main hall was closed.

We were lucky enough to have a guide who used to be a monk (trained in this very monastery) and this made the visit here very informative and thought provoking. It is interesting to have the various statues and pictures explained in context to the religion. We did see some monks working on some small construction and a small boy who banged a gong in the temple area every few minutes during the period we were there. It had been raining earlier and this provided quite a mystical feel to the whole visit - although be careful on the slippery mossy pavers. Visit here added to our cultural knowledge of Vietnam which was something we pursued through the whole country.

Thien Mu is an interesting and peaceful working monastery and well worth a visit when you're in Hue. There is no entry fee, and only 3-4km away from Hue so easily reached by bike, motorbike or car.
There is also a lovely bonsai garden inside. The visit took us around 30 minutes, it's not really big.
You can also choose to take a boat back to Hue, but be prepared to bargain hard!
