Palm Garden Hotel
Reviewed 10 August 2010

Spent 2 nights at Palm Garden with my 6 yr old last weekend. The room comes with complimentary breakfast at Palm Cafe. Each morning, there were 2 different sets of breakfast to choose from. They don't look appealing but the taste speaks otherwise. However, the portion is only good for children and small eater. I couldn't believe that we actually enjoyed the food and went back again for lunch. The coffee was great too! Btw, this is the only restaurant in the hotel. There is a big fitness centre open for members and complimentary for hotel guests just adjacent to the hotel, above Palm Cafe. The foot massage was great with reasonable charges. The down side would be the room. First of all it is too dim even with all the lights on! Also notice some cobweb at corners of room which is rather disgusting and some of the towels are stained and with torned edges. The staff are friendly and helpful. It will be good if the room is cleaner.
It took us 10-15mins slow walk from the shops. There is a good Japanese restaurant nearby, Escapade Sushi in Kiulap, the sashimi was so fresh and thickly sliced. Simply to die for. If i have to go Brunei again, will definitely be back for more sushi. There is also a beauty salon further down from Mothercare, the massages are half the price of what the hotel is charging but no comment on service coz i only tried the one in the hotel which is good. I'll only recommend this hotel to budget business traveller. If i am to go back to Brunei again, i'd probably pay more to stay at more decent hotel and somewhere with easy access to shops and restaurant as public transport is rather scarce in this area.

Well stayed here 3 nights, cost £120 inc taxi airport transfers,so about the same price as a b&b in Blackpool, but this has a free gym with classes, even a basketball court, local breakfast was not to my taste,so they did what i wanted for no charge! Also a spa with good prices for guests.Ethelbert.(no relation to king of kent) was most helpfull,as were all the staff, driver happy to drop me off in town foc for Sultans parade. This hotel is within 5/10 mins walk of dozens of shops/eateries and bus routes. Not happy (see other reviews) suggest you pay double or more and stay at the Empire, which is 15 mins by taxi from anywhere,so will cost, but is very high standard. As we say...you pays your money..and takes your choice. I thought is was good value and would use again.

If you're not looking for something fancy, just a place for a couple of nights in transit, it's more than enough. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly. The wifi didnt work in the rooms so we had to ask for a cable from the front desk. The driver was really friendly and accomodating. The hotel is 5 mins away from the airport, good location with a couple of restaurants just a walk away.

One thing that was a turn off was the pool. It didn't look too clean.

For the value, it's not a bad place.

My wife and I stayed there 4 nights as a result of our son becoming ill on the flight from Bangkok, he had an operation in RIPAS Brunei. At 2300hrs it was the only one the hospital staff could recommend to us. We would have left after the first night if we were paying for our room + we wanted to be close to hospital.

The Brunei people were great and very willing to help foreigners like ourselves, with the only exceptions being the Palm Garden Hotel staff, I would only look to employee one of the Bell boys who really tried hard to help. all other staff are hopelessly lazy, or incompetent. We will visit Brunei again, but stay elsewhere.

-The hotel staff were more interested in flirting and gossiping than providing SERVICE, they just did not care.
-Even if all guests were English speakers the hotel staff will remove a random English language program, 3 out of 10 channels, from network so that owners daughter can watch Disney Channel. All Asian channels must remain unaffected, Owners instructions we were told.
-The lobby and lift area stank of both smoke and alcohol for our first 2 nights
-One Bell boy watched my wife and I with our luggage before being told by receptionist to help us.
- When we were leaving I parked our hire car in one of 3 spaces reserved for hotel owner so my son who had just had surgery could get in...immediately several hotel staff came out to tell me to move it...nobody was interested in helping my son get into the car. Immediately after I reversed out cones were placed to stop further cars parking there even if only for a short time.
-They do not know how to use a fax machine properly to send to overseas numbers.
-Internet best if you use wireless and piggyback someones unsecured network...hotel wired ADSL speed soooooooooooo slow I gave up. We used other internet sites rather than try to get better service.
-Avoid the complimentary breakfast as food looked like pig slop...we asked for macaroni. Although in the evening the meal was very good.
-Our room had at least 2 resident lizards who were very quick...we got one after several attempts.
-The 2 room cleaners were in and out of our room in less than 2 minutes, we timed them....they made bed and would not vacuum......my wife asked them to, apparently because we were leaving in 2 nights.

Overall this hotel was very disappointing and if we were planning a trip we would never go there .

We stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of April. We were given a room with twin beds even tho we asked for a double bed. The view from the room was out onto a rubbish dump. The hotel says it has the internet in every room, not true. We could not get onto the net. They sent up someone to fix the shocking TV pictures and internet but he knew less than us. Breakfast was included in our rate but it was a set menu and you had to pay for extra's like Orange Juice or Toast. We asked how to get into town to look at shops as there is no buses or taxi's around this hotel. They said their driver could take us into town and we thought this was nice of them until we came back and they said we owed them for the ride into town. I don't mind paying for what we use but they should of told us that we had to pay.
Over all I would never stay at this hotel again. It is too far out to do anything. The staff really don't care.
