“Great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

We stayed in this hotel for three nights from 29 January 2014. We loved this hotel, clean, fresh, nice room, large bed, huge bathroom with wet room rain shower, plenty of hot water. Great location, lots of cafes and bars serving great food and drinks. Roof terrace, quiet and good place to relax with a drink. Breakfast can be served either in your room at no extra cost or in the small intimate salon. Food freshly cooked to order and well presented. Free WiFi. Cheerful and helpful staff. This hotel was chosen and booked by our UK travel agent.

Stayed for one night. Clean, modern and great food and service. Wonderful roof top bar over looking the river with great cocktails. And if you stay there they give you a discount at a nearby tapas bar called the Latin Quarter, where the food was great too. Definitely recommend both.

Great hotel in perfect location for Phnom Penh - first time to PP and a great introduction to the sights! Great value for money - rooms are huge with everything you need - enjoy happy hour up on the roof top terrace to wind down and watch the world go by! Plenty of food and drink selections! Would definitely stay here again!

Second visit to The Quay, this time with friends from Australia. We all loved the ambience, comfort and style of the Quay. Comfortable beds. Large bath tub, rain showers, Large flat screens. Mood lighting. Our balcony rooms with adjoining patios looking out on the Sisowath and Mekong rivers served for pre dinner drinks. Food and drinks at the hotel are very good, including some clever tapas style dishes. Limited selection of wines. Service was uniformly friendly and efficient at all times. The people at The Quay go out of their way to meet your needs. A great place to stay.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2013

I stayed here twice (17th to 20th October 2013 and again on the 1st to 4th November 2013), once on a second level river facing room and the next time on level three on a river facing room. The second time was only because there was no other hotel available in my price range, so it was a matter of necessity. I wouldn’t come back again. It is overpriced for what you get, and I can say honestly that there are better options in Phnom Penh for less money.

There was no Airport pickup even though one was ordered, which after a 14-hour flight wasn’t a great introduction.

The décor is in need of an update. River facing rooms are spacious, however everything needs maintenance or replacing. The curtains I had in my level 2 river facing room had holes in them (might be time to get new ones guys). The fans in the room, although they looked cool, had nobby bits dangling off the sides, which sort of distracts from the whole design of a single blade roof fan. The air-conditioning although ‘on’ never seemed to work properly. It just seemed to pump air around the room. This was the case in both rooms.

Food and room service was below average. Ordered steak medium, and was delivered still mooing. I would not order food from here, not even the free breakfasts. Luckily enough there are a few good options within walking distance from the hotel.

Staff seemed either disengaged or uninterested, and sometimes both. I had not even checked in yet and I had concierge asking me if I wanted a woman for a night, this was not a great experience. I guess they take a pretty light view on sex tourists. I was equally uninterested in firing a gun at a firing range, thank you.

There was a mistake with the dates on my second stay and the staff kept saying that they had me due to check-in tomorrow; this is all they had to say for about 15-20 minutes. Yes, thank you, I understand the mistake I want to know what we are going to do about it. I ended up giving up in frustration and grabbing my laptop starting to look for options, I was about to book the Raffles when they bumped another guest and all of a sudden I was able to stay (lucky me)…

The bed sheets were in need of replacing, as the ones I slept in had blood spots on them, they were torn and had holes. It felt like they were ratty and old. I also found hairs in my bed, which definitely weren’t mine. Housekeeping seemed disinterested in maintaining the room while I was there, and coffee/tea/water was never replaced during my stay. I had to go and request replacements from the main reception.

That said the location is great, very handy to be within walking distance of both bars and restaurants and a few of the major tourist destinations. The river front rooms have a great view of the Ton Le Sap River. And the rooftop bar is sensational; it is great during happy hour.

Room Tip: The river view rooms are not worth the extra money.

If you want a central riverside location right in the thick if things then this is the place. Overall though, having stayed in different four or five star places in Phnom Penh, it trades a bit on the location and doesn't quite hit the mark for me.

Upon arrival, we found even though the suites list that they have both king size and double bed, there was only one bed in the room. This was though quickly remedied by staff. The room on the top floor stank of old smoke. Cupboards smell fusty. It was very spacious and the large separate bathroom and wet room is great. But the room, whilst full of gadgets, is a bit impractical. Lights are very dim, there is only one mirror in the bathroom. It feels a bit bachelor pad rather than well designed boutique hotel room. Sheets were marked and had small tears, and towels were threadbare with small holes. You sense this place has seen better days. The suites get the noise from the roof top bar, but this isn't really a problem as the bar shut at 2130ish when we were there.

Breakfast is as other reviews say very tasty. A perfect eggs Benedict and lots of choice. But the order was cocked up twice which was a pain. Staff are consistently friendly and helpful although as ever standards of English vary.

It is all a question of personal preference and it is clear some people love this place. Travel guides often suggest that the riverside is the main place where it is at. My suggestion would be be to stay in one of the nicer boutique hotels around 184, 178, 240 streets (see reviews on The Plantation); dip into the riverside (which can be a bit seedy and full of sexpats) as tuk tuks are very cheap rather than stay here.
