“Uncomfortable if You are a Woman”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

The owner was friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

The rooms smell like sewer, which they place a cut up lime over the drain in the shower but it still reeked and never went away.

Do your research before you book here. It is not even one block from the Red Light District in Phnom Penh. The basic rooms are an ok price, but they are very small. The guests of the restaurant and guesthouse seemed to be creepy old men due to the location, as well as the many seedy bars in the area made me feel uncomfortable walking around at night.

We were put on a high floor and the internet went out often.

If you do stay here I would spend a few more dollars to stay in their larger rooms with balconies.

Room Tip: Spend more money to stay in their larger rooms with a balcony, you can air out the sewer smell when...

Good rooms, friendly staff, clean and well looked after hotel, only problem was the ant infestation and the unreliable Internet connection.

I've stayed a number of places in Phnom Penh over the years and Velkommen (guesthouse) is my new favorite. The rooms are spotlessly clean and well-appointed, with cable TV, fast wifi (streaming fast), hot water showers (fresh lime slices placed over drain daily), comfortable mattresses and ice cold air conditioning.

The staff are honest to a fault and take care of you. They don't always remember to smile, but they always remember to help out. They don't even complain when you wake them up coming in late :)

The bar/restaurant in the guesthouse side has edible food and cold Anchor while the backpacker side is always full with people to meet and hang out with. Menu's just okay, but with 50 great restaurants in PP it's fine.

The owners are very honest and helpful, always stopping to say hi, answer questions and chat for a sec.

Only complaint: NO BUM GUN! A travesty of epic proportions.

p.s. - it's the local hash pub if you're in town for the hash.

We stayed at Velkommen for 3 nights. It is located in the center of the tourist area, about 5 blocks from the docks, and 5 blocks (in the other direction) from the Central Market that also serves as a bus station. Despite the central location, the rooms themselves were quiet.

The room was large, with fan and AC. The bathroom was clean and drained well.

The managers that we met were ex-pats, and they gave excellent travel advice. One in particular (Edvin) knew about a couple of bus routes heading north that weren't mentioned online that allowed us to restructure our plans to visit Preah Vihear to be much more efficient, giving us an extra day in Siem Reap. This advice alone made it worth staying at Velkommen. The cambodian staff was also very helpful, and suggested several local places for excellent Cambodian food that weren't just tourist traps.

We were very pleased with our stay at Velkommen, and would stay there again.

I stayed at the hostel Velkommen. The staff were one of the friendliest I've seen while travelling. Great value for money! Very clean and the bar is a great way to meet people and just hang out. Great location. Great staff. Great rooms.

We enjoyed our stay at Velkommen Inn. The $20 room was clean, quiet spacious with TV, fridge, WiFi and a safe. Great location, near to the riverfront. The owner and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Good value for money by Phnom Penh standards.

Based on the room description and email corrospondence with the owner, booked the pent house suite at $45 per night excl breakfast to treat my hubby on our 1st night in Cambodia at the end of Nov. We were not looking for budget accommodation but rather abiance. As a fellow guest house owner we would never expect our top paying guest (55yrs old) to carry his suitcase 6 flights of stairs. Very standard room for the price, side view to the river. I posted this review under the other site ,Velkommen Backpackers, which appears to be the same venue, hence a repeat. The Owner sent me a very rude email after my first review which really surprised me as I Would have expected an apology for not meeting our expectations. I am reposting the review under the applicable website as I am of the opinion that as a foreign tourist, we owe it to other fellow tourists to report sub standard service. After 3 weeks of travelling in Cambodia, this guest house was the most expensive with the least value.
