“A good place to stay for a short time.”
Reviewed 4 June 2011

I stayed at the diamond palace for 1 night recently. Rooms are spacious and clean. Air conditioning was very loud which was irritating during the night. Wifi is fast and the tv has a good selection of English speaking channels.

The bathroom was also very spacious abs generally quite clean.

Service was really good until our very last minute there when we realised that the staff had forgotten to arrange our airport transfer. The taxi was only 15 minutes late to pick us up in the end and the staff member who forgot was apologetic, but it was still a stressful end to the stay there.

Another issue was that the hallways, stairs and the bar/restaurant/lobby are all very dimly lit. This is trivial if you do not plan to spend any time at the hotel but after a couple of hours in the restaurant, my eyes were sore.

Apart from the lack of light, the bar/restaurant area is nice with lovely cocktails!

A good place to stay for a short time with pleasant staff.

A good value for money hotel, we paid 700 baht/night for a six day stay, including breakfast each morning, room was just like the internet pic - very big floor area for an Asian hotel, huge bathroom; good cable tv service showing local, Thai, English/US and French channels. Happy to have a room without windows, slept some days till 9am, no street noise to wake us up.
Staff were wonderful, we'd give them top marks for politeness and service. The small bar/restaurant provides a small menu of local/western style foods at cheap prices.
Our one complaint would be that smoking is allowed in the restaurant, there were guests who seemed to smoke endlessly - one had cigars - and we chose to eat elsewhere on two occasions the smell was too unpleasant. Good business for the nearby Korean restaurant!
Many of the tuk-tuk drivers didn't know this hotel and we had some confusion over this and the Diamond Hotel in city center, take one of the hotel's business cards with you it has the address and small map on it. Varied by driver, but US$2-3 for tuk-tuk to Russan markets, Central markets and the riverfront, $8 to the airport.
Not the best location if you don't like walking - we were happy to walk most days otherwise you'll be using tuk-tuks for every single journey.

Overall, this was an OK place to stay.

The location is not the best and you are out of the tourist district. Although, the Palace, Toul Sleng Museum and the Monuments are no more than a 15 minute walk away. The street on which the property is situated is typically Cambodian. And busy during the rush hours.

There was one incident late at night, whereby I was followed by a gang of rowdy teenagers. This put me off going out at night. So if you are a lone traveller or a single female traveller, my advice would be to take care and never go out with more then you need. Crime is a constant threat in Phnom Penh.

There were no carpets throughout the property. So, unfortunately you heard every footstep outside in the hallway, likewise with voices as they bounced off the walls and floors, at all times of the day.

Our room was cleaned daily and the towels, linens refreshed likewise. Wifi was available on floors one and three and the signal was good. Floor two had some blackspots as we found out upon check in. However, a room change was offered and the problem resolved.

The TV selection was good and the reception equally as good. There was plenty of storage space for your bags etc. And the Aircon worked well. The decor was fresh and the walls clean. There was a good shower, with bathtub and the water was scalding hot. The beds were comfortable if you like it Asian "hard" style.

On a downside, the food was very expensive and the cooked breakfast laughably lacking, given the cost. We had it included with out stay, but ended up only taking coffee and toast. The evening food was OK, but again a little on the pricey side, likewise with cost of drinks.

The laundry service was good and relatively inexpensive at 50 US cents per item. The clothes came back fresh and pressed and were delivered back promptly.

Overall the Diamond Palace is an OK premise. I feel that the city and location let it down somewhat, but well done them for trying their best and providing a friendly service.

Would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Not the best location and get woken up constantly with roudy people coming in all hours of the early morning.

This hotel surprisingly turned out to be clean, comfortable and the staff/manager were a friendly lot. We really had a nice 6 days/5 nights stay there.
The place is quiet and not noisy with massage available just next door. Service there is also very friendly.
This place is about 20 to 30 minutes walk to the Palace but of course while walking towards the palace a lot of tuk tuk will come asking whether you want to take a ride or not. Note the opening time of the Palace, morning not sure when they close for visitors because even reaching there at about 10.30am the doors were closed. We need to go there after 2 oclock then only we managed to go in - cost a hefty sum with not much viewing inside as expected. Other places of interest would be the Central Market - shopping area for souvenirs such as semi precious stones (i think?), scarf, shawl, bags etc. We went crazy bargain hunting with all the stalls for cheap souvenirs. We also visited the Killing fields, genocide museum, the school turned prison, shopping malls, etc. On the whole a very enjoyable time there.
