Reviewed 28 July 2012

The website AGODA.com advertised the Paddy Rice Hotel as a Euro-owned and managed 3 star waterfront hotel.

Well, after walking up 4 flights of stairs carrying my own bags, in 36C heat and +90% humidity, (and no air conditioning) I was seeing stars. The closest view of the water was from the bed, while looking up at the stains on the ceiling. Complaints to management about the overpriced room drew the following response "I told the owner that there were many complaints about his advertisement on the internet but he won't listen".

The 13" x 18" flat screen TV was set up at the furthest distance from the bed. There was only one chair, and no where else to sit if one wanted to watch. The window, which was at the end of the bed overlooked a bank of air conditioners. The air conditioner took over 8 hours to reach a comfortable 28 C. The bathroom flooded when the shower was used, which is okay if you don't mind standing in soap scum and other stuff from the backed up drain.

After checking the online reviews again to understand how I could be so wrong about the place, I discovered that the best part of the place was supposed to be the food. Wrong again. The free breakfast that included coffee was actually inedible. Then the coffee was charged at $2.75, because, and you will love this, "the waiter was from the night staff and didn't know which coffee to serve, so you have to pay". After a few minutes of discussion, I gave up the fight. After all, arguing with fools only makes it difficult for others to distinguish who the fools are.

The sole redeeming quality of this place are the 8 am - 3 pm waitstaff and the Khmer hotel manager who bent over backwards to remedy what is obviously a scam by the owners.

Paddy Rice is not so nice.

Stayed there with my friend in early june 2012, For the price with breakfast was a bargain and what i really like about Paddy Rice is the location. Just sitting at the bar facing the Mekong River is
very relaxing. It's smack in the center of riverfront area so all the bars, massage centers and food places are all walking distance. The breakfast is fair but the staff are friendly and helpful. The room has all the necessities a workin water heater, air cond, safe box, tv and a comfy bed.

My nephew and I stayed here in January 2012. The location could not be better right by the river and a block away from a busy street market. The rooms were basic, clean with good showers. There are better double rooms facing the front with balcony looking over the river. Breakfast was good, though go for bacon rather than sausage ! Great place to hang out and watch the world and even an elephant wandering by. Friendly staff were very helpful arranging visas to go to Vietnam. No problem with internet which was free and available all along the river front.

Hot shower was a problem -shouldn't have been for that price. The lock on the door was broken, there were used condom wraps on the drawer -probably they are still there and will be forever unless a guest threws them away. Location is great. Breakfast is great. There are better options in phnom phen.

After a disappointing previous hotel/ guesthouse i was pleasantly surprised by Paddy Rice. Great balcony, small room but served its need. Staff were great and always willing to help although they can get caught up and service can be slow. They need to pre guess drink orders and be suggestive selling rather than wait till drinks are dry.I tried as much as i could on menu in 5 days and all was good food. Breakfast was best but all was good value and quality. Free wireless was a nice touch and saw people nursing a coke for hours just to use.

I have booked again for end of July so says it all?

Room Tip: I would always have a balcony

A room with a balcony is great. Noise didn't bother me either. Hot water just a bit slow so try not to be in a rush for the airport. Definitely clean and safe.

Room Tip: Take a front facing balcony room. A room without a window would be sad any place, but it's clean...

I've traveled here four times in the past year and other than relying on an Irish name, it's in name only. I'm Irish decent and take pride in the nature of an Irish welcome in bars around the world. Yes, they have wifi, clean, food is okay, but hospitality and the 'Irish' feel is not there other than having a European style bar. I've been treated and experienced less than I would expect. Irish places are less a business and more family is my expectation.
