Would definitely recommend this place in Phnom Penh - decent but not great location, good communal area with swimming pool, and friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were fairly nice with massive beds which was great

Friendly staff, most spoke pretty decent English which was a nice surprise as most Cambodians I encountered did not. The rooms were nice and pretty clean, with wide comfy beds a strong ceiling fan and good air conditioning. However there was no door to our bathroom -_- ... Also my friend had some clothes washed at the hostel during our stay and they lost his towel as well as gave him a pair of someone else's socks...I am not sure if the owner of the penguin socks was able to reclaim them but my friend's towel is still out there somewhere. The staff in turn gave him one of the hostel towels which served us just as well.

The food at this hostel was very good but a little on the pricey side, if ordering fruit juice make sure to specify if you want it made with actual fruit and not syrup. Had a few instances where my drink order was mixed up but the staff was very polite and corrected my order at no extra cost.
Wifi only works downstairs near the bar area and the pool is not really for swimming. It is quite small and in a place where it would be very awkward to parade around in a bikini. But none the less it adds a nice decorative touch.
I did not schedule any of the tours they offer because I found them to be over priced, I think the trip to Oudong Mountain was priced at 30$ and The Killing Fields tour was 18$ but I managed to get a TukTuk to driver to take me and my friend to Oudong and the Killing Fields(Choeung Ek) for 25$ total. We gave the guy 5$ gas at the end of the day (in the morning we saw him put in 2$ which got us to Oudong and back no problem) and invited him to have lunch with us Both locations are in fact very far from eachother but as you will see 1$ goes a very long way in Cambodia....our grand total was probably around 42$ for the day including our own lunches as opposed to 48$ for JUST transportation had we booked through 88Backpackers. Also I am not sure if their Killing field tour is to the actual Choeung Ek or if they only take you to Tuol Sleng...

Room Tip: If you have heavy bags consider a lower floor...there is no elevator here and none of the staff even...

Your info on the tours is not correct.... not really sure what your point is.

I just spent 7 weeks bouncing around hostels in SE Asia. This was one of the best I stayed in. The beds are extra wide and really comfy. The staff are up for a laugh. the bar area is massive and really chilled. If you want to party - go out. It's really easy to meet people here and the food is really really good (if a tiny bit expensive) The bathrooms could do with an update and they could do more to organise walking tours or trips to the attractions so you can meet even more people, but it's a good place.

Stayed here 3 nights. Booked the cheapest dorm. Rooms are spacious and tidy. The beds are big! This dorm is situated directly above the bar but it's still not too loud that you can't sleep.
There's Wi-Fi and awesome pool.
Friendly bar staff and reception. The food was great, make sure you try the peanut butter banana shake!

Go to monkey. Receptionist was so rude and angry constantly, laughed when we asked about soap for the bathrooms, and they try to get you on buses they get commission on but won't book anything else for you. Under staffed and hectic - arrogant owner who doesn't care. Arrogant friends of owner round the bar. Waste of $20.

This doesn’t sound like us at all!  While we acknowledge that we’re not perfect and sometimes guests encounter issues, this seems like a very unfair assessment and we have to question whether you even stayed at our gueshouse.  Our receptionists are lovely, sweet ladies and 88 has more of a laidback than hectic vibe, as our other – genuine - reviews say. :-)

We took a chance with Eighty8, and were more than happy with the decision.

We decided to go down market to a hostel for the Phnom Penh leg of our trip. If all Hostels are like this, then we have been doing the trip all wrong. The rooms are sparse, but very clean, and are really the only difference between upmarket hotels. No fridges or tvs in the room, not even a door to the bathroom, but you know what, who cares, the savings we made on this cheaper option were more than made up by the downstairs space and swimming pool.

All the other customers are happy and want to share stories and tips on what to do. Any time we left the hostel there was always someone else going the same way so even the transport was cheap.

The food was more than reasonably priced and yummy. The happy hour and the swimming pool were a match made in heaven.

We are going to try more hostels now, and we hope hope hope they will be like Eighty8.

Thanks all the lovely staff for the fantastic stay!

Really found the location of the hostel a major inconvenience and at times felt very unsafe. While hostel replies here state a 5 mins walk it was it is more like 15 mins and something that should never be done at night. The walk is poorly lit and the surroundings delapaded and poor, so travellers have no choice but to get the awaiting Tuk tuks whom take advantage of this fact and quote you up to $4 dollars for a short journey, they can be haggled but the cheapest I got was $2 for a 1.4 km trip. One should factor in this additional expense when choosing the hostel.

The WiFi signal was 2 weak to reach the upper floors and Skyping from bar isn't ideal due to the music.

The staff were friendly and courteous with good English. The room was very clean and I didn't mind the curtain bathroom door. Breakfast was tasty but a little pricy.

There was also no stores nearby to get supplies or snacks other that the inflated hostel priced goods.

Phnom Penh is the major city in a developing country.  88 RECOMMENDS that you do not travel by foot after dark anywhere in the city, westerners are preyed on my opportunistic thieves who come out after dark – this goes for expats living here also, and if you're foreign it is not advised to walk anywhere after dark if you’ve got a bag on you.  A lot of Phnom Penh is "dilapidated and poor" and this poverty does mean that wealthy westerners are a target.   Please all future customers note, if you do go out at night leave your valuables in the lockers provided.

In the daytime ;) we are a 5min walk from the city centre.  Slightly out of the busy centre in order to make room for our swimming pool -  a trade-off that helps cool you after a hot sweaty day in the tropical city :)

I can’t help but think you have missed the feelings and mentalities that make up this wonderful, iconic city.  The constant feeling of on edge, the need for the city to be given a lick of paint, the abject poverty right beside wealth of unimaginable proportions - it’s a city of contrast, and given your thoughts, i think its sailed right by you!!

Sorry Eighty8 did not live up to your expectations, safe onward travels.
