From arrival to departureRaffles Le Royal was exceptional – the staff, the buildings and facilities were excellent. We stayed at the hotel for 4½ days and it is the best hotel experience we have ever had - and we have had quite a few :-)
The buildings are old, but extremely charming and mostly beautifully maintained (some renovation works was going on, but with no disturbance to us - we could only hear it when we were in one of the very nice pools in the beautiful tropical garden). The history of the hotel is absolutely also on the positive side, and so are the Elephant Bar and Le Phom with its books and delicious cakes :-)
The room, bathroom and beds are excellent – with very comfortable pillows and good mattresses.
The hotel is very conveniently located near to most things - you can easily walk to Central Market and Sorya Shopping Mall, Wat Phrom and also to the riverside.
The hotel food is very delicious - we tried all kinds of meals there and hereunder room service and we were all very satisfied. The children especially loved the chocolate fountain:-)
Last and not least the people of the hotel makes your stay absolutely perfect and recommendable. No matter who you meet they are all deeply professional but still very genuine and kind/sweet. Our 4 year old son got very high fever (41+) the night we had just arrived to the hotel and the staff and the management supported us in all possible ways – e.g. brought in cold towels and “electrolyte” for him and they also arranged a medical at the SOS Clinic. They provided - free of cost – a hotel car to the clinic, where the driver waited for us until all the tests had been done and we had the results. Luckily our son only suffered from a severe throat infection and after being medicated he quickly recovered. The following day the driver contacted us to hear, if our son was better, and the same applied to all the other persons who we had been in contact with during his fever/illness. That kind of hospitality and genuineness just makes you feel so welcome and so pleased that you have decided to go to Raffles Le Royal.
More about our stay:
My husband had a massage at the spa which was the best he had tried - and he has had many during our many trips to e.g. Thailand.
The garden is really beautiful and has 2 big swimming pools – one low water level for children. There were many chairs and they were comfortable with soft and nice towels.
The prices at the hotel and restaurants may be to the more expensive side compared to other PP hotels but the we found the price level absolutely reasonable when we looked the quality and value.
We arrived expecting a very good hotel, but it exceeded our expectations in all ways and we absolutely wish to recommend it. Phnom Penh wouldn't have been the same without Raffles Le Royal:-)

Staying at Le Royal is like entering a time warp; we were transported back to a different time of travel and different expectations of service. It was hard to move without being asked if we needed something. Everything was as other reviewers have mentioned so will not be repeated except in one respect. We stayed for 3 nights and on both days we returned from mornings out to find our room had not been made up. As soon as we telephoned housekeeping this was rectified but with a hotel of this quality and with so many staff it would not be unreasonable to assume they had a system of checking which rooms needed to be made up without waiting to be notified. This did not spoil our stay - we had a great time - but is one the hotel should address for future guests.

Our 4 night stay at the Raffles Le Royal was luxurious, relaxing, and unique. Phnom Penh wouldn't have been the same without the Le Royal. Its architecture, style, and attention to detail for customer service and satisfaction all combine to make it a distinctive and top hotel. The hotel staff is warm, helpful, and knowledgeable. The inside courtyard with 2 swimming pools is beautiful and serene. The room and beds are excellent. The price is less than you might imagine. The Elephant Bar is not to be missed. We arrived expecting a very good hotel, but it exceeded our expectations. Doug Van Vlear

Room Tip: Ask for a room opening into the courtyard.

This is my first tripadvisor review though I've used the site for two years. The Raffles Le Royal in Phnom Penh is a superb hotel. I am staying in a room in the historic main building and although some have noted that floor tiles or stairs are a bit worn, I would wholeheartedly disagree - they are well maintained and characterful, and they show their age with style.

Service has been sublime and the staff are wonderful. I sampled the dinner fare in the main restaurant and the experience is one to remember: refined atmosphere, discreet service and fine cuisine. The Elephant Bar, as others have noted, is not to be missed. The hotel oozes with history and atmosphere.

However, I am not sure I would recommend this hotel to non-smokers. There are non-smoking sections in the breakfast room and main dining room, but the lobby, Elephant Bar and pool areas (as well as other common parts as far as I can tell) are smoking free-for-all's. At any time as you sit in the lobby someone could light up right next to you. Resting by the pool? Ash trays at every poolside table forewarn of the constant threat of smelling burning tobacco. And even though the breakfast area has a no-smoking section, make sure to sit as far away from it as possible as otherwise you're likely to smell the smoke from someone's 'breakfast cigarette'.

Smoking is a blight on this otherwise perfect hotel. If you smoke, you'll be very happy here. If you don't, the experience will still be amazing, but be prepared to smell smoke everywhere.

The hotel is situated in the embasy area which is quiet and safe but a long way from the tourist area of river front.
The hotel is right out the old movies, big old room, execlent service even down to billard room.

We saw the "Killing Fields" movie before our trip and couldn't wait to stay at the historically significant Hotel Le Royal now owned by Raffles. Sydney Schanberg and Jon Swain (of Killing Fields fame) would stay here while covering the Khmer Rouge before being moved to the French Embassy which is located just down the street. Jackie O. stayed here before visiting Angkor Wat and the champagne glass with her lipstick smudge is on display outside the Elephant Bar. The hotel is a true "grand dame". Parts of it are a big outdated like the floor tiles and elevator but it's overall a classy operation.

We had read an earlier review that someone had bed bugs in room 219 and since we were just a few doors away, the first thing we did was check the mattress but thankfully did not find any evidence. We coincidently found a note that the hotel was spraying as part of their pest control program the week we were there.

Our room was spacious and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the pool. The breakfast buffet cost $20 ea and is vast enough to fill you up until dinner. Don't miss out on the pho or the "morning wake up" smoothie with beets and apples.

The downside of the Raffles is that there is nothing within immediate walking distance. You will be stuck eating at the hotel if you want a quick bite. There a dozen tuk-tuks right in front ready to whisk you off anywhere for a few dollars.

As others have pointed out, the check out process is ridiculous. The same two people who check you out, also handle complaints, give out maps, make calls for guests and so on. We were first in line and waited almost 20 mins. The female manager came up to us to ask if she could help us but when we told her we need to check out, she said, "Oh well, I guess you need to wait just a bit longer." Thanks for nothing, lady.

Be sure to double check your bill! We had a web rate of $150/night but they charged us $198 despite the fact that we initialed and agreed to the $150/rate upon check in. Keep your receipts and check every item.

Don't miss out on happy hour at the famed Elephant Bar from 4pm-8pm when drinks are half hour and you get free taro chips and salsa. Do try their famous Femme Fatale cocktail.

Room Tip: Book early online for the best rates.

We stayed there for 3 nights while on an organized trip from Vietnam to Cambodja .
It looks dated, but it has everything to make it a first class hotel. Good location. Great room. Friendly staff. Good service.
