Phnom Penh was once described as the most beautiful city in Asia. But, sadly that was before the wars of the 70's and the sadistic Khmer Rouge. The city is now traffic chaos personified yet amidst this seemingly unmanaged mess is Raffles Hotel Le Royal. Not a large hotel but certainly now one of Asia's most serene and charming. Photographs on its walls tell a tale of war correspondents, mayhem and destruction yet it's a hotel which oozes charm, class and 2nd to none service. The pools and famous Elephant Bar are excellent. Few hotels in Asia can evoke the nostalgia and history of Le Royal, even though much of it has been rebuilt and refurbished since those dark days of Pol Pot. I'd return to Phnom Penh even if I'd had to pass through that traffic just to be welcomed again at the front door of le Royal.

There is not much negative to say about this little peace of tranquility within the chaos that is Phnom Penh. The service was lovely (although maybe a bit overbearing? There are only so many times you can be asked if you are ok!); the food divine (we were lucky enough to dine at Le Royal when a Michelin starred chef was in residence), and the staff do go out of their way to make you happy. We received both an early check in and a late check out which, with our flight schedule, was much appreciated. The concierge also organised a private tour guide to take us to the Genocide Museum and Killing Fields that, while not cheap ($55 for the guide, $120 for the car), was informative and we felt very safe.

The are only two negatives I can identify; one serious, one less so. Firstly, the serious issue. The Elephant Bar is a great historic setting with wonderful ambience but the fact that smokers are allowed inside really ruins the atmosphere for us non-smokers. Most of 5-star Asia now has non-smoking bars/restaurants - why not Raffles? Also, there were a few European men in the bar with very young, very scantily dressed Cambodian women ... those men just lowered the tone enormously and made most of the other customers uncomfortable.

On a minor note, don't bother with the bacon martini ice-cream by the pool! You can't taste either flavour (which may or may not actually be a good thing ...).

Colonial style hotel conveniently located near the Phnom Penh town center. The rooms were very comfortable and the hotel grounds and pool were nicely maintained. We stayed over Easter weekend and enjoyed a fantastic Easter brunch, complete with champagne, wine, easter baskets and plenty of activities for children.

Just completed a two week trip at the Le Royal PP.

I read a couple of reviews before checking in with rough comments that this was not a five star resort. They could not have been more wrong.

I suppose if your idea of 5* is limited to a new Four Seasons / Ritz / etc trip then this is a different world. Staff that get to know your name, remember your breakfast order, recall what your preference for the small things is ... a concierge who gets flowers sent at 10pm ... the type of service you get at the Berkley in London, the Grace in Joburg, the Pierre in NY.

Add to this a wonderful colonial feel hotel (white marble corridors, teak staircases), a tranquil pool and reasonable gym and sauna and I would put it up there amongst the best hotels in the world.

There are a few annoyances but these can be avoided. The tuk tuk drivers camped outside the hotel are a mafia cartel who will try and rip you off at every turn. Book ahead by 15 mins and call a cab - you get a cheaper deal and air con.

The window has a warning to keep it closed to prevent mosquitos and monkeys popping in. It's worth heeding - I ignored it and spent 15 mins chasing a few mosquitos down !

Other pluses - Elephant Bar is a great first or last drink of the evening, the main restaurant has a great set lunch ...

Overall highly recommended ;-)

Stayed 2N and received awesome service during our stay. When we first arrived, was greated warmly by the staffs. Very happy with the rooms as they are clean and big. Even though it was only a short stay with Raffles Hotel Le Royal, I must say, the experience we had was great!

Heres what I like:

1) Attentive staffs - When we sign out from the gym, was greeted warmly by the staffs by our last name ie. Thank Mr xx and Ms xx (most of the hotels wouldn't even bother when the guests leave the gym)

2) Elephant Bar - Great place to hang out with friends with a pianist playing awesome songs

3) Facilities - Pool & hot jacuzzi
After a tiring day, a great way to relax is to dip yourself in the hot jaccuzi and the pool!

If anyone were to travel to Phnom Penh, will definitely recommend a stay with Raffles.

An iconic colonial style hotel , typical standard of raffles hotels , great style and ambience , and of course the service was flawless . Our room was nicely furnished , needed a little updating . Breakfast is buffet style with a huge choice of quality food , well worth it . The location is away from the main drag but transport easy to get . Priced reasonably .
