“Fantastic hotel”
Reviewed 16 October 2010

This was our first exposure to a Raffles hotel and we were not disappointed. This elegant hotel is a landmark in Phnom Penh. Gorgeous rooms, a friendly staff, and excellent food make this a must stay in a chaotic city. Although we had a guide while we were here, we also had our own "personal” tuk-tuk driver who always seemed to be waiting for us outside the hotel. We used him one day to go to a restaurant and then he always seemed to be looking and waiting for us. Although his prices were a bit inflated because we were staying here, he certainly showed us some interesting things we did not see with our regular guide. Be sure to stop in the shop in the lobby, they had some of the most beautiful things we saw in Cambodia. We bought lots but wish we had bought more.

Beautiful hotel with amazing service, a haven in a busy, hot and sweaty city. Staff were, without exception, exceptionally attentive - from the concierge to hotel managers everyone seemed to remember our names, and nothing was too much trouble.
Would absolutely recommend.

I had romantic notions about staying here and I wasn't disappointed (but I might have been if I'd have paid lots of money). We booked online on their website and the room was only £90, a snip for a five star hotel. We used the elephant bar during their happy four hours and loved the ambiance and decor.
The gym, pool and sauna are lovely and I did feel enchanted by the colonial feel of the hotel. We did not eat breakfast there but ordered room service which was tasty and prompt, albeit not very Cambodian.
I thought the room was nice, but a little average for such a salubrious chain. It smelt a bit musty and we could always hear the sound of the street below, but it did not effect our sleep. We were a bit jaded before we stayed here and it did perk us up.

A splendid place, although expensive for Cambodia, cheap really by similar standards anywhere else in the world.

Stayed 5 nights on business trip in a standard room. Had previously visited the hotel many times but first time I had stayed. The only character hotel in PP. which has been beautifully maintained. As would expect the staff are punctilious and service excellent with friendliness. Room good size with large bathroom and all usual amenities expected of 5 star. Only a very tad tired looking in bathrooms. Centrally located and easy access for anywhere. Good pool area. Elephant bar has happy hour, comfortable and meeting point for many PP residents. Ate once in the main restaurant, which is not always very full, however, food excellent but wine a bit pricey for ordinary bottles. Lunch time buffet in same place as breakfast and reasonable cost for such a location. Plenty of fresh choices from light to heavy. Breakfast buffet plentiful with the usual various styles of food Asian and western.

After visiting a few places in Laos and Siem Reap in Cambodia, it was really a big change to arrive in hustling and bustling Phnom Penh. The Raffles is quite a distance a way from the airport (about 30 – 40 minutes by taxi). At the airport you pay a fixed rate of USD 9 which is about the same as for a metered taxi.

The Raffles is in a nice colonial building. Check-in was smooth and we were taken to the lounge where they served us free drinks. This is better than having to stand in line at a desk. The corridors have been restored in a very nice way. The room was ok but was not very large or exceptional like you expect from a Raffles hotel. There was paid internet in the room at a very high rate. The roomrates are relatively high for Asia, so we felt that this was somewhat inappropriate. The good news was that they took care of our room twice a day which we really appreciated.

We liked the swimming pool very much. Breakfast was terrific. At the same restaurant they have seafood night on Friday which was a real treat and is highly recommended.

Location of the hotel is central and only a short tuk tuk ride (USD 2) away from Sisowath Quay where they have a lot of nice bars and restaurants. It is also close to the Royal Palace which was superb and most of the other attractions/markets.

All in all, the Raffles is a nice hotel and good place to stay but don’t expect exceptional rooms like in some other Raffles hotels.

Having been enchanted by the old world charm of Raffles in Singapore and completely blown away by the graciousness of Raffles in Siem Reap I found this hotel to be a massive let down. It does not even come close to the others.
To be truthful it barely felt like a 'Raffles' hotel at all. It could really have been any one of a number of large chain hotels. It had the coldly professional feel of a typical city hotel, businesslike but sadly lacking in character. Even the staff seemed to be on automatic pilot !
Our 'Landmark' room was very cramped and the amenities were a joke....a single little bottle of shampoo etc.,not replaced, two sachets of coffee and our 'fruit bowl',in a place coming down with exotics, consisted of three bruised apples.
If their 'Elephant Bar' was an attempt to carry on a great Raffles tradition of old colonial elegance then it was a dismal failure.......a very ordinary room,a dodgy pianist playing Barry Manilow on an out of tune upright piano, paper napkins, a surly waiter and grossly overpriced drinks. What a bummer!
To have the gall, in this day and age, to charge by the half hour for internet access is just unacceptable, especially at the room-prices they charge.
I'll happily pay through the nose for something special but I have to say that my stay here left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Whoever is in charge here really needs to get his act together and start paying attention to the details.
Next time I'll stay for an extra 4 days in Raffles,Siem Reap and give this place a miss !
