“beautiful and quiet”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 March 2013

We stayed three nights here and it was too short! The whole place is very tastefully done and is very relaxing. It is a well-done blend of East and West. The room was just lovely: very clean, beautifully and simply furnished, quiet, large, and bright. This describes the whole hotel, actually. Breakfast was yummy. The staff was very helpful and not overbearing. The grounds and pool were a welcome haven in the heat. The Samsara Villa is one of the best places we stayed in.

Room Tip: When you get a tuk-tuk to the hotel, it's helpful to have a Phnom Penh map. The Samsara is very...

I booked on line before arriving in Cambodia and took into account other remarks made on Trip Advisor. I had been 'upgraded' to the Khmer Suite and that was lovely. (I had no trouble with barking dogs during the night and the aircon was working well). A couple of issues were put down to it being the Chinese New Year and whilst my first breakfast was very good the others were a bit hit and miss. However Nicholas, the owner, was very helpful and the absence of a safe deposit box in my room was overcome by the use of his own safe. I agree that it was difficult for return trips by TukTuk drivers, especially after dark but as long as you have one of Nicholas' business cards the map on the back is a great help. Possibly if he is reading this he could make a larger print off of that map to give to guests to help with their return journeys. The pool area is bliss, and to be honest the shade given by the trees was a blessing. The security and privacy of the wall round the garden was an added bonus and the air of calm and cleanliness after the hussle and bustle of the city was a godsend. No problem with hot water (the shower head had a bit of a will of it's own but I showed it who was boss!) T.V. in the room was wide screen and plenty of channels to chose from. Lovely comfy bed. One negative issue, the VERY open plan shower was dark and the floor slippy. I have recommended the hotel to my friend who often has people visiting her in Phnom Penh and if I am returning there myself I will be looking to book the Samsara.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel in the middle of January and returned again at the end of January as we loved it so much. It is a beautiful hotel in a quiet part of Phnom Penh. The pool area is lovely, surrounded by plants and trees, the pool is clean and as we like the sun so much the staff even moved the sunbeds from out of the shade into the sun. The rooms are beautiful, we stayed in a double room on the ground floor the first time and the second time we stayed in the Colonial Suite - all very nice - lovely furniture, there wasn't a hairdryer in the room but you just ask reception for one if you needed it. The owner Nicholas is really nice - very friendly and helpful and is very knowledgeable about Cambodia and we got some good advice from him about where to go and what to visit. Breakfast is lovely and the service is really good. There are mosquitos about which is a shame but this is Cambodia; the staff sprayed the rooms which sorted out the problem and they lit mosquito coils at night by your table which helped too. Tuk Tuks were always available and it cost about 8 dollars for a return journey to the river front. The coctails here were really good and the wine was lovely too. All in all this is a lovely boutique hotel and we will definitely return again.

As it was booked by a family member we didn't know what to expect. The experience was great! The owner went trough great trouble to facilitate us (2 adults and 2 children 11 & 9) in the Colonial suite, normally suitet for 2 occupants, but big enough for a few more (est.60-70 sq meters). This room was the best I have ever stayed in (I am a pilot and visit hotels regularly) and it was most certainly good enough for a honeymoon e.g.
The owner was very friendly and knowledgeable, speaking 6 or 7 languages fluently amongst wich are English, French and Khmer, the local language. He helped us find an equally nice hotel in Siem Reap. The owner is available all day and never far away, but is never in your way. As the hotel was still partly under construction some facilities were not yet available.
The only real downside is that the hotel is not easy found, certainly not when you are not familiar in the city, but the tuktuk drivers are very helpful and don't mind searching a bit.
The pool is very nice and large. Be aware of the mosquitos in the evening so don't forget to bring repellant, but this counts for the entire country.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a balcony, but this is nice to sit outside privately

We stayed twice at Samsara while in Cambodia, on the way in and out of the country. I booked the place by chance and was positively surprised by the warm welcome of the owner Nicolas, and the quality of the accommodation. The rooms upstairs are very spacious. I wouldn't recommend the ones downstairs, there are a bit dark and noisy.
The pool is very nice hidden in the shade, and the staff is very friendly. Some people complain that the hotel is difficult to find, I'd agree for the first time you get there. Afterwards, it's very easy to find, and the good thing is: the hotel is far from the hustle bustle of the city.
What really makes this place unique is Nicolas: he will go the extra mile to give you advice, book restaurant, find a driver, and hotels in the country. He knows Cambodia very well, and has friends and contacts everywhere.
Regarding the rooms which are decorated with excellent taste: the beds are fantastic, and the bathroom convenient, though we never had hot water while we stayed there.
We will certainly go back at Samsara whenever we are in Phnom Penh.

I stayed at Samsara villa for a few days but changed hotels, it is nice to look at, but I was mosquito bitten all the time. I also found the pool clean but almost always in the shade...as I wanted to tan, this was not helpfull.
The rooms are nice, but there are no hair dryers, robes, nor safety deposit box in the rooms even if these items are mentioned in the adds. The television was a very small very old model, and impossibleTo get a clear picture. Bathroom leakage when one takes a shower, water everywhere.
What really bothered me was the situation of this hotel, tuk Tuks have a very hard time finding it, I spent hours driving around...too out of the way, no shops or restaurants nearby...nothing. And it is quiet during the day but at night the dogs of the neighborhood have symphonies and make a god awful racket.

Room Tip: Don't take the top floor suite, air con doesn't do the job, and it is very very hot as there...

I highly recommend the Samsara Villa. This boutique scores outstanding on all accounts. The place is located in a quiet side street in a nice neighborhood. It is not fat from the city center and there are always tuk-tuks waiting at the door of the hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are spacious, well equipped and wonderfully decorated. Nicolas, the owner, will go the extra mile to make sure you haver an enjoyable stay. He is extremely knowledgable about Cambodia and he helped us a lot to plan our holidays. We discovered many hidden gems that are not mentioned in the guidebooks. The rest of the staff is also very nice and most of them speak good English. The food at the hotel is excellent, in fact most of the time we ended up eating at the hotel. I cannot think of anything I didn't like at this hotel. Thanks again Nicolas for your hospitality. We will be back!
