“A little piece of sanity”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

I stayed here for five nights in early June 2012. Rooms are cool and very clean. The pool is a welcome relief from the Cambodian heat. The food and the customer service was always very good. This hotel is close to Lucky supermarket and a tuk tuk ride away from most attractions. Spend the extra money, stay here. The best rooms are the ground floor ones next to the pool.

Taking a group of teenagers to Cambodia for a mission exposure trip, we needed somewhere that there was a break from the incessant noise and smells of Phnom Penh. Billabong was almost too good for the task - did we overdo it? Working each day 30 minutes out of PP in a slum village was an abrupt experience for the boys and coming back to ease the stress and sweat of the day in the pool and whip up to the local western-style supermarket was a good entree into the trip. Later we would live in the rural poverty of Oddar Meanchay province where westerners were seldom seen but, for now, we needed a clean, tidy and relaxed home base. Billabong provided such a place and, compared to later experiences with accommodation, perhaps it deserves a 5-star rating from a Cambodian pov. Certainly good value and welcoming. Local staff grasp English well and are ready to assist with enquiries. Local restaurants such as Romdeng and Sam Doo's are within walking distance as well as some more adventurous haunts inhabited by locals. Local supermarket is 2 minutes walk - in a high rise western mall with many dubious eating options (don't eat western in cambodia) but bank and markets are plentiful. Also good access to Central Market and not far away from Riverfront. We had no trouble accessing the tourist attractions with plenty of transport options but the ubiquitous tuk tuks served us well. Some renos currently occurring in the neighbouring buildings but generally this was not invasive.

Room Tip: A bit of a climb up to the 3rd floor but rooms were brighter and probably a cut above compared to th...

The staff were really wonderful and very welcoming. The rooms were simple yet clean and very comfortable. We stayed in a room on the ground floor near the pool. The neighbourhood is not the most charming of areas and there can be some harassment from tuk tuk drivers (not out of the ordinary for phnom penh) but the hotel staff will help you if you let them know. It was also really good to know the staff were turning away residents who tried to bring young prostitutes into the premises and that they do not tolerate the very sad sex industry in the city.
The price is a little expensive but the great service makes up for the high price. We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Great staff!! Location is quite but still very close to all the action - not the safest of neighbour...

I stayed in a pool-view room on the second floor - the room is basic, but a good size. The bed is quite hard, but the pillows are good. The bathroom is a shower/toilet combo that looks like it dates from the 1970s, but it's clean and everything works well. The tv is a bit dated (not flat-screen), but otherwise fine - there are a few English-language channels. The aircon is modern and works well.

The pool is very welcome in the Cambodian heat! There's a decent menu for food and drinks, and you can get a good fresh meal for under $5. They'll also do your washing for $3/kg.

I stayed as a solo traveller, but this place would be equally well-suited to couples and families.

Stayed here for two nights as a bit of treat on our backpacking holiday. We were really impressed with this place from the beginning, especially the service. The staff could not do enough to help you and everything was done promptly and with no hesitation. They can organise everything from visas to bus tickets and they don't charge anything extra.

The rooms are very clean and include a TV, safe and air con. The bed was so comfortable and the sheets looked as if they were brand new. The bathroom may be a little small for some people's taste but it was kept clean and had a shower with good water pressure.

The pool area was a fantastic place to cool down after a big day in Phnom Penh and the restaurant surrounding the pool had excellent food at really low prices.

The location is about a five minute walk from the river front area and restaurants but if you're feeling lazy a tuk tuk could get you there in a minute. It's also possible to walk to S-21 from there if you're energetic, it only takes about 20 minutes.

The Billabong was excellent value for money and I'll be staying again if I'm in Phnom Penh!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the higher floors for less noise from the pool area.

The pool is great and provides a great way to wash away the city grime but you can probably find a better place to stay with a pool that's just as nice. There are no amenities in the room beside a bar of soap (which was changed in the 4 nights I stayed there). When I asked about shampoo I was given a brusque response that "we don't provide that". The rooms are clean but the bed was very hard even by Cambodian standards. It was noisy and I got no sleep during 2 of the 4 nights I was there. The breakfast was the worst I had in a month in SE Asia. I ordered the crepes with bananas and honey (I ordered this the night before because their service is so slow) and I was served crepes with bananas no honey - they had run out. The location is good if you want to be near the Central Market otherwise it's off the beaten track.

Perfect hotel for spending a few days in Phnom Penh and exploring the city. Staff is friendly and helpful. The accomodation is clean and you can see the staff takes good care of the place. For us, the swimming pool was the biggest asset of the hotel; nothing better than to dive in cold water after a hot and dusty day in Phnom Penh. Service around the swimming pool (food, towels, drinks) was great!
