Meng Goldiana 282 Hotel
Ranked #230 of 274 Hotels in Phnom Penh
Reviewed 18 October 2011

I travel to Phom Penh very rarely ( I prefer to spend every holiday on the coast) but when it needs, then I almost stay always at Goldiana ( when they are not fully booked). There are other hotels in the area, and I have tried a few of them, but nothing compares to the old hotel, which has a very interesting place in the history of modern Cambodia. This hotel has been awarded by the American Embassy as a safe, reliable and comfortable place to stay, and indeed it is.
Good choice they made to offer non-smokers rooms only. They have a safe in every room and a small restaurant near the lobby, which serves a buffet breakfast ( usually included in the room's price.
Flaws? No. maybe a bit pricey compared to new places in town, but you have to consider that you are in the safest and quietest ( and the most "western" ) area of the chaotic town ( dubbed NGO area), with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. They have a good parking lot, thing wich is very rare in middle range accommodation in Phnom Penh. Free internet in every room and a swimming pool add to the value of the place.

Room Tip: some of the best rooms are on the facade side, and they share a communal balcony with a sitting area...

The Goldiana continues to provide great accommodation at a very good price. It is very conveniently located in BKK so close to most things, which is why aid and development and NGO types love it. Rooms are spacious and clean. The staff are really great and friendly. Only slippage from last time: they have taken to preparing breakfast omelettes and eggs in advance so they are basically cold. However, they will cook you one if you ask

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms back from the elevators are very good value: the configuration of those on the stre...

Good pool and fine rooms but very little character. Staff perfectly friendly but too expensive for what it was and give breakfast and restaurant in general a miss. My advice, look for a cheaper elsewhere, and pay for the pool as a visitor.

Despite its friendly staff, clean bedroom, good service, and convenient location, the hotel should seriously improve their breakfast!! Very limited choices and I don't feel I'm eating a healthy most important meal of the day. The lobby also smell strange this time I had to hold my breath from walking in to getting into the lift. I think it would be my last time staying there and I'm sure I could find other options with better value for my next trips.

Room Tip: 301 is near lift, larger and roomy than others.

This hotel was booked for me by a tour company and I hadn't read the Tripadvisor reviews before I went. I now agree with most of them. It was cheap and you get what you pay for. This hotel is old & tired, the rooms are clean but basic and very boring.

The air-con in the rooms is fine, but there's none in the rest of the hotel, so breakfast (also boring) is a hot & sweaty affair. There's free internet but its in the middle of the foyer/restaurant, so its hot to use and no privacy with it. The food in the restaurant is very cheap and really not bad at all, but again its way too hot to sit in the restaurant. There's so many good restaurants in PP you'd be mad to eat at the Goldiana's restaurant unless you arrive late, tired from a long journey as I did.

As noted in other reviews, the pool is probably the best thing, but good luck finding someone to get you a drink, so best to take the beer, coke or water from the fridge in your room. There's also some nice balcony areas up on levels 5 + 6, which can be cooler than inside the hotel.

The staff are friendly and fairly helpful, I didn't have any of the problems of some previous reviews. Like most Cambodian organisations, they love meaningless paperwork here, so look out for a clutch of photocopied rules and "information", for which, bizarrely, they require you to sign on arrival, and to which you will never refer again. Oh, also I booked a wake-up call which never happened.

The Goldiana's location turned out to be the highlight - you can walk (via the park) to the Royal Palace in 20 mins and all the way to pub street in about 30 mins, max. A tuk-tuk (always available outside the hotel) will get you there in 10 mins for a dollar or two. The hotel will give you a good map. There's actually also plenty of reasonable food/drink options nearby the hotel, including a really nice Thai/Cambodian restaurant behind the hotel.

If you just want a place to sleep, clean safe and friendly, this will do. But these days there are much better and more interesting (and more air-conditioned) hotels in Phnom Penh.

This is a good place to stay when you want to see the sights of Phnom Penh (which is about 3-4 nights). The building is sound and the service was good. The breakfast was fine and if you don't like it there is a great place (East/West Cuisine) 2 blocks away that serves food all day. A tuk-tuk to the National Museum and Royal Palace is a 10 minute ride and should cost you $2. Their tuk-tuks carry four comfortably. The best market is the Russian Market. Rooms were $35 at most.

I agree with other reviews that this hotel is over-priced and not really competitive with other hotels in the area. My friend and I had separate rooms but similar experiences. First, check your windows when you enter the room! I stayed in two separate rooms and all of the windows were either opened or unlocked. Second, we both had no hot water. When we complained, they told us there was no problem. We had to keep complaining until finally our rooms were moved. When they were working on one of our rooms, they left the door open when no one was inside! I would not stay here again.
