“It's all about the tonle sap view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

I'm not particularly a fan of huge hotels, with space so big it's evident sometimes they don't know what to do what it .... This trip to Cambodia I have managed to stay at two these hotels - HImawari in pnom penh and sokha Angkor in siem reap - both by business arrangement .

I am now at HImawari - a hotel apartment that offers u the full beauty of the tonle sap - it's dual existence serves as a river and a lake, and is a unesco biosphere heritage site.

To marvel at this beauty, you gotta make sure u have booked a room with the lake view - full or partial, depending on your investment .

There's a melancholy beauty about Cambodia, perhaps due to it's badly scarred history of sadness, and this seem to be carefully buried deep within the smiles of the gentle Cambodians and their hospitality....

Here at himawar there's an in house microbrewery, with a bar sitting right In front of the lake - it boasts of the best veers in town and a lake view to complement. I will get my pint this evening.

Rooms are averagely clean and well kept . Service is very efficient.- they fixed my ironing within ten minutes as I was rushing for a meeting

There's no upperty minimalist design where u could not find where a drawer starts and end, no cutting edge apple-supported tech gadgets in your room to play with. Just simple comfort - nothing posh nor pretentious

Just don't forget to ask for a room with view. Spend lots of time at alfresco areas staring at the waters that originates from the Himalayas, walk along the it's banks and thank Mother Nature for the beauty before your eyes ...

This hotel is not what you expect in the centre of an Asian capital city. It is more akin to those you might find in the Caribbean. The entrance foyer is spacious and airy and has terracotta tiling on the floor. It leads out onto a terrace overlooking the confluence of the Meekong and Tonle Sap rivers.

The rooms themselves are where things get a little quirky. The building was apartments before it's conversion into a hotel. Our "room" consisted of two bedrooms, a lounge area, two bathrooms (one en suite) and a kitchen area complete with microwave and washing machine. The room was clean, but was a little dark and dingy. The bedrooms are carpeted, but the other areas are tiled, and the lounge in particular was a little slippery if wearing just socks. Despite a large bathroom, there was a shower over the bath rather than a proper walk in shower. Some rooms ( not ours) overlook the river, but most have views of the car park, road or next door hotel. Having said that, there is plenty of space to spread out, and is in complete contrast to the size or rooms generally in south east Asia. We had problems with the door self locking, and the lifts to the rooms were a little unpredictable as to where they might take you.

The public areas are a little tired, and in need of upgrading. The service varied from indifferent to verging on the non-existence, particularly at breakfast time and in the bar, although reception was much more efficient. Breakfast was poor. The western style hot food was uneatable, and the Asian hot food not much better. There was a very poor range of cold foods, and what was there was no better than acceptable. Tea and coffee refills were hard to come by. Some guests in road side rooms complained of the noise.

On the plus side, the hotel is very open and airy for its city centre location. It has a large swimming pool with bar, and ample sun beds. The terrace has great views over the river, and there is the added bonus of a microbrewery in the hotel itself. (Excellent beers, and a real surprise). The hotel was also very clean, and was comfortable. It is right in the centre within a gentle stroll of the Palace and numerous river front bars and restaurants, and only a short tuk tuk ride from just about anywhere in the city.

There are some real issues here, not least of which is the poor service, however, if you can see beyond that, the tired decor, poor breakfast and the road noise, the location, microbrewery and pool make the stay worthwhile. But if you are a stickler for good service, or like a good breakfast, try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Avoid a room overlooking the road.

It was a great stay at Himawari for us, as a family. We can stay all together in an apartment but still have our own room. Services are great and make us feel so welcomed and home. The beautiful and open space layout of the hotel makes it so relaxing. The hotel is super environmental friendly with lots of plants and trees surrounding it. We had morning walk along the riverside and it was great. The Italian oysters at the Oysters bar restaurant was yummy and the beer at the micro brewery is a must try. Hope to come back here real soon to relax and rejuvenate again :)

Our second stay at Himawari Hotel Apartments during our visit to Cambodia was one to remember. We had really enjoyed our first stay in this accommodation a few weeks earlier, but on arrival to reception we were greeted by the extremely friendly and professional Mr Thou Koheng (Front Office Manager) who upgraded us to an amazing three bedroom, two balcony suite over looking the river, it made our last night in Cambodia very special! The Himawari is certainly "the place to stay" while visiting Phnom Penh. The suites are spacious, modern, very clean, have kitchen and laundry facilities, the staff offer a high standard of service, it is located perfectly close to many tourism highlights and eateries, has a great pool, wonderful food, an in-house micro brewery (great beer!!), and smiling faces of the staff wherever you go in the property. We will definitely return to Himawari next time we visit Phnom Penh. Thank-you Mr Thou Koheng for making our visit so memorable and making us feel so special in your wonderful country!

It was a great stay for us at the Himawari Hotel. The location is fantastic as it is just next to the bustling street of cafes, pubs, restaurants, the majestic mekong river and well as the places of interest. Room is bigger than expected, service has been pleasant and comparable to international branded hotels. Quality of food is highly commendable though do not expect the huge varieties that one experiences in 5 stars international hotels.
