“As good a choice as any”
Reviewed 12 July 2008

A lot of different opinions here, but I had a great time. Each of the rooms have names as they don't have that many rooms. I already forgot the name of my room but it was the one directly below the bar and my balcony had the same view as the much acclaimed bar.

It was a very nice and large room with a very nice bath/shower so I'm not complaining. You could walk to the Royal Palace and the National Museum in minutes so the location isn't bad. I wasn't there for the pizza or the food, there are just too many restaurants and I like local places. That said, Khmer food is definitely not Thai food. It's good, but where's the flavor????

I had their driver pick me up at the airport for $10 so that was OK.

So, I don't know what to compare it to but for the price, the location and overall experience, I thought it was a good choice. I did take a tuk tuk over to Raffles to have a drink at the Elephant Bar. But I was glad to get back to the FCC. And, after all, it really was the scene for a long time for foreign correspondents... and may still be for all I know. It's a cool place.

Quite nice place on the river in phnom penh, but like previous people found it to be less than we expected. The one in Siem riep looks great (tho we did not stat, it gave us reason to book in the phnom penh FCC. The restaurant serves OK international fare, but apart from the pizza nothing is that special. The tuk-tuk drivers are indeed a big annoyance when you leave the premises, and we were made to feel very uncomfortable by their aggressive behavior. The FCC guard did nothing to help even when asked.
Overall not a bad spot, but we would not return.

I have to agree with the other posts that this is the poor sister to the FCC in Siem Reap. It is ok and as previous people have said the location is great for the views of the river but it is incredibly noisy at night with all of the street vendors, bikes, cars etc as Cambodians favour their horn to let others know they are coming! We barely slept for the 2 nights we stayed there.

Some small niggly things in the differences - the rooms look more tired than the rooms in Siem Reap, no umbrellas provided, no body lotion, the linen was dirty and had to be changed, the service was poor and lacked the sincerity of the smiles we had at Siem Reap. Trying to book our transfer to Sihanoukville through the hotel ended up being quite a painful process and we had to stay pretty patient but we got there in the end! This is not a well oiled machine yet which is such a shame. It would be great if they worked on the service and installed some double glazing!!

  • Liked — The bar and its views!
  • Disliked — The noise from the street

Spent 1 night here recently - after spending time at its sister hotel this place really is a poor second. the location is good on the riverfront - but the city is so compact getting to the riverfront isn't a problem anyway. The reception area resembles that of a cheap guesthouse and the rooms could definatley do with a lick of paint and a bit of TLC. The restuarant area and bar is great and the views are lovely - but you don't need to stay here to get that. Overall for 60$ I think better value can be had in other places in the city. The tuk tuk drivers outside are to be avoided in my opinion - they definately try to overcharge and can sometimes come across a litlle intimidating, just walk around the corner and you will get a much better deal. The riverside are is great - loads of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. We loved PP but after staying at The FCC in Siem Reap the FCC in PP did disapoint. PP is a great city though.

Stayed here for two nights, but in hind sight, could have probably found better accommodations for less. They have about 8 rooms, and king beds in all, no doubles/twins. Room was spacious, the balcony is nice overlooking the river. The room was not anything special at all. The bathroom shower appeared to have bad stains and mold as did some of the fixtures. I think they may need to do minor updates to the room. The bathroom gives the feeling that things may not be clean enough. The location was good enough, a little far from Central Market, but right down the street from the palace and Silver Pagoda. You can, however grab a tuk-tuk for $3 to the Central Market. They have a restaurant upstairs which is VERY pricey for the area, but a nice ambience and the food is pretty good too. Also, the restaurant is obviously open to the public and you have to walk right past the rooms to get to the restaurant and bar, no one is really around, so make sure you use your safe if you stay here. There is a bank of rooms off of a door to the left as you go up the stairs, and there is technically a lock on it, but it's never locked, so anyone could go into the little alcove, close the door behind them and no one would ever know. I wouldn't ever return to Phnom Penh, but if for some reason I did, I would certainly choose another hotel, just to see if there are better values.

Having come from the FCC Angkor we were initially very disappointed in the FCC at PP - a different standard of service altogether! However the price is lower, and the location is perfect and having the wonderful bar upstairs is a real plus - even if it is very touristy and expensive, the view from the bar over the rivers at sunset during Happy Hour is well worth it. However the bar does get packed at sunset so recommend getting there early and bagging best seat.
The internet booking service from the FCC website is very efficient and you can select the room you want from photos.. also internet booking is much cheaper than the rack rate. We chose the Ta Prom suite which had great balcony views over the river, fridge etc. Definitely their best room and at $80 B&B ++ not bad value for money. The service, breakfasts and cocktails were however is nowhere near as good as the FCC Angkor. They have tea making facilities in the rooms but rather meanly refuse to give sachets of coffee so if you don't like tea you have to go upstairs and buy a coffee in the bar. The other downside of the FCC are the taxi-touts outside who pounce on you the moment you leave the hotel. A real nuisance and we were surprised the hotel do nothing about it to protect the peace of their residents.

TIP: We debated whether to go to Phnom Penh at all and, with the benefit of hindsight, probably not worth the effort. We stayed 2 days and ran out of things to do/see on day 1. Its nowhere near as charming a city as Vientiane in Laos. However if you do decide to go and are travelling from Siem Reap, would definitely go by boat down the Tonle Sap. We were talked into flying as told the boat trip was long, but then found out that it only took 4 hours SR to PP. The Tonle Sap is fascinating.. in fact the only memorable thing we did in PP (apart from sit at the FCC bar) was a boat trip down the river.

FCC is a nice place with great location and stylish rooms for a reasonable price, though serivce was not flawless. We booked an airport pick-up with our reservation which was confirmed by email however nobody showed up at the airport. Asked for an explanation the day aftrer our arrival, no feedback was given. Other than that, breakfast at the restaurant is good in a nice setting with a beatiful view of the river.
