“Friendly atmosphere. Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Anise Hotel in March 2014. We initially stayed for 3 nights as we were traveling to different places in Cambodia. We love it so much that we went back for a further 4 days just before the end of our one month stay in Cambodia. The staff were so friendly and organized. We loved the breakfasts, appreciated the laundry service. We had the room with a kitchen in the Annex and loved being there. There are no lifts but we did not find this a problem. Kept us fit. This was my 5th trip to Cambodia and my husbands second and we will probably return. The Anise has become our preferred hotel in Phnom Penh for its cleanliness, convenience, efficiency, the restaurant, laundry service, reasonable price and above all the friendly atmosphere

We loved our time at the Anise Hotel. They upgraded us to a bigger room on arrival and the staff were amazing. The room was lovely and spacious with our own little balcony area. The best bit was the restaurant downstairs. The food was the best we had in all of Cambodia. We spoke with other expats at dinner and they said they dine there regularly and that its the best food around. The massage place they recommend is excellent, we went there every day. Cheap and good. The tuk tuk driver they recommended 'Sothea' was a great guy and had a lovely tuk tuk with potted plants hanging off of it. They even did 10 pieces of laundry each for free. We loved this hotel and would go back there again.

Dear Johnson A,

Thank you for your kind review of the Anise Hotel on TripAdvisor. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

I would like to take this opportunity to answer a couple of your remarks: All of our staff who have direct contact with our guests speak English. Many of them have university degrees and have an excellent mastery of the English language. Others have enough mastery of the English language to be fully operational in their field of work. For instance, our service staff will not be put on the floor to tend tables if they cannot understand an order. But please remember 2 things: First, English is not their first language. Second, if you ask one of our restaurant staff what time the museum closes for instance, they might not be able to answer you. However, there is ALWAYS someone at the Anise Hotel and Restaurant who can answer, if not all (who can?), but most of your questions. Just ask to speak to any of the front desk staff who have been trained to answer our guests queries, or to the supervisor or manager who are always on duty.

Second, I would also like to add that we cater to many guests who stay with us sometimes months at a time, sometimes even a year or more while they work in Cambodia. They feel that the hotel with the amenities we offer (including breakfast, free laundry service, free wifi), the Anise Terrace restaurant which serves a wide selection of homemade Western and Asian food and the friendliness and helpfulness of our staff to be so convenient, and they feel so much like a home, they don't want to move to an apartment. Not all of our rooms are on high floors of course, so if you have problems climbing stairs, please request lower floors.

We hope to welcome you back to the Anise Hotel on your next trip to Phnom Penh.

All the best,
The Anise Management team

I stayed at this hotel for a short stint from May 27-29, 2014.

This was my first time in Cambodia, so my family and I were ecstatic that the hotel was wonderful. I had initially booked 2 standard rooms, one with an extra bed. The hotel was nice enough to upgrade one of the rooms for me. The rooms were comfortable with everything we needed: working a/c, running water for showering in our own bathroom. No elevators in the hotel so if you have a bad relationship with stairs, I'd request a room on the lower floors.

We loved the attached restaurant. The breakfasts were great and the 1 time we had dinner there was wonderful. We would sit outside for drinks and it was so serene, even though the patio is next to the street. There's a buffer of foliage and plants that make all the difference. The decor throughout the hotel was beautiful.

A huge perk was the complimentary laundry. When you're exploring in the heat and humidity, I find your clothes start to smell ripe real quick. It was a quick turn around for clothes as well: if you have your laundry out and picked up before 8am, it will come back same day. Loved the tropical scent it came back with. That lovely fragrance stood the test of time (and humidity) for a week if you didn't wear the clothes.

The staff was very helpful and attentive. They were very quick at replying to my emails for any questions and requests that I had. They were able to organize some drivers for me on short notice. The drivers they chose were wonderful and we used them for the rest of our short stay.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. The location was great – not too busy and lots of stuff a short walk away. Lots of restaurants and shops speckled in every direction.

The Anise Hotel is beautiful. Sitting out on the terrace for breakfast every morning or for a drink in the evening is a pleasure. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful - they make the hotel! Great location, free laundry, good food and clean, comfy rooms. Win!

I had a great time staying at Anise - the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was lovely on the verandah. The location was convenient with plenty of restaurants nearby and an ATM on the same street.

So, I'm a person that loves meeting local people and enjoying the local life. The Anise Hotel is the perfect space for that. The staff is amazing and it feels like home. The hotel is surrounded on the main floor by a veranda that serves as restaurant, happy hour spot, and much more. I've met good friends here and I've gotten to know Phnom Penh even better because of the incredible helpful staff. A wonderful place to feel like a local but have the comforts of home. I can't recommend it enough!

Room Tip: There's no elevator, so that can be a problem for some.
