Makphet offers creative Lao cuisine, as well as great shakes and cocktails, all in beautiful surroundings. The restaurant also has a small gift shop attached to it, selling products made by families which will help keep their children in education.

Staffed by former street children, this is a lovely cosy restaurant with excellent food. You can choose half portions of dishes on the menu so that you can try more things but even with 2 half starters and 2 half main courses between us we were stuffed. Everything is very tasty and beautifully presented. We went at lunchtime but couldn't get a reservation for a return visit in the evening. There's also a little gift shop selling cute handmade stuffed toys, bags and t shirts which is worth a look.

Not overpriced as some have said, you get what you pay for, and that is originality, fantastic flavour combinations & staff with real genuine enthusiasm for what they do combine to make this a real treat of a place, totally different to all other restaurants on offer.
We never go to the same place twice but this place had us coming back for more & if we had been staying another night I would have known what I would have ordered for another different flavour experience -thank you Macphet

This is a cosy little restaurant which is tastefully decorated and located right at the heart of the city. It also has an extensive range of dishes in its menu. However, the food did not live up to the expectation. We had 4 dishes and other than the pork sausage, all the dishes were bland and lack the punch which can usually be found in IndoChina dishes. Perhaps the flavour of the dishes has been toned down to suit the palates of the tourists.

The 4 dishes and one bowl of rice and glutinous rice each plus a big bottle of beer and a non-alcoholic drink came up to about USD40+; a tad pricey considering that we only had chicken and pork.

Kudos however for the good cause that the restaurant is promoting with interesting sale of recycled items such as detergent plastic bags made into purses.

Be sure to bring enough cash as payment via credit card will incur an additional 2 or 3% (can't remember exact percentage) charge which I find unreasonable. Also, be sure to bring smaller notes as the restaurant did not even have change for a USD100 note when we were there. Strange considering that it was packed to the brim that night and hence, should have been more well-prepared.

Reservation is required.

Wonderful modern Lao food prepared and served by trainee staff. Great value, non-profit and whilst you are helping them you get to try some wonderful local food.

I ate here on the 9th of November 2013 and it was one of the best meals I have ever had in a restaurant! The Fresh Spring Rolls are 'to die for'! We did eat there 2 nights later and there must have been a chilli or something in the food that was a bit shockingly hot but - oh well - no place is perfect but this café comes close. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
