This was a lovely hotel, with nice rooms, very clean, adequate breakfast and with very helpful staff. The location is good - amongst small residential streets, which make you feel like you're in the real Laos, but near enough to walk to all the restaurants, bars and sights.

I was surprised that the rooms were quite spacious and the bathrooms large. Everything about this hotel is good except for two things:

(1) The very limited breakfast selection. They didn't even have brewed coffee.

(2) The housekeeping attendant forgot to leave the usual clean white blanket when she made the bed. When I discovered this upon returning at around 9pm, I asked the evening receptionist for one. He declined, saying their sheet sets don't come with clean white blankets, even though they do. They provided those blankets for the first 2 mights I stayed there.

Lovely hotel in a great quiet location. The staff is lovely and the rooms a clean and well appointed. Breakfast is good too. Each room has the name of a flower instead of a number, very sweet. Would recommend for outstanding value for money

In what can only be called a 'dirty little backstreet' in the Vietnamese quarter of this small city, the Avalon is adequate for a short stay but not a place you would choose for a longer stay or for a relaxing afternoon away from the heat. The facilities are sparse but adequate and there turns out to be a small fridge selling drinks off the foyer. The only food available is breakfast - eggs in all their forms and croissants with jam. When you find your way around town, the hotel turns out to be close to all the sights and well within walking distance of most. My view was of a roof top where old furniture was dumped, and the thumping disco music went on until after midnight - unusual for this 'quiet back street' I'm told. Like eveywhere else I stayed throughout Laos, the walls are paper thin and all comings and goings can be heard clearly. Despite its drawbacks, its a place to sleep much more in keeping with the tone and ambience of this town than the few very upmarket 5 star hotels further up the road, which require patrolling security guards it seems.

I staid twice during a one month period. At the beginning I was impressed, the hotel is quite new, the lobby looks quite neat and tidy. Lots of shortcomings: Pretty noisy from the inside, you can hear doors banging all the time and the cleaning maids make lots of noise throwing their equipment around and shouting to each other. Lobby told me that would be kind of normal? Anyway there is also an issue with hot water which did not work. Fittings in the room are a little cheap as well. The elevator fits one person only.

Room Tip: 3rd floor up as second floor has no views (Wall of adjacent building)

Smiling greeting when we arrived, They have a picture on the wall that promises that you will come in an OLD person when you arrive and and be YOUNG when you leave. We got upgraded to upper level floor. Nice touches like a china patterned sink and wooden floors. The room was a wee bit small for 2 people---patio was nice yet not much to see. Road was quiet and many families around. Great location--quick walk to shopping and city center. The breakfast was yummy--baguette, hot eggs, fruit. The only downside was the coffee---there is beautiful coffee in Laos yet they serve 3-1 coffee. If they made fresh Laos coffee I would give the highest rating. The elevator is so small and we couldn't fit 2 people and our luggage so we had to go up and down 2x. Lobby was great to work from...set up laptops and since room was so small spent most of the day working from lobby. No safety deposits boxes in room. Reception looked after my laptop and it felt safe. On weekend nights can be a little bit loud as many Lao parties with music nearby. So stay up late and party with the Laos people! Free and slow Wifi. Better Wifi in lobby than in room. Fix the coffee and avalon would be living up to the old become young promise :)

My wife, her friend and I stayed at the Avalon in Jauary 2010. We had rooms overlooking the empty land at the side of the building, which were bright, clean and comforable. This year we returned with our family for 4 nights and one of our 3 rooms faced a brick wall! There was no natural light coming into the room at all and it was impossible to tell if it was day or night. We were told that the hotel was full and we could not be moved. Apart from this we quite like the hotel. There is a spacious roof terrace (not many chairs though), breakfast appears to have improved since last year and we like the slightly out of the way location, closer to where the locals live. Our sons played pool in the pool hall across the road ( the people there even went out to fetch them some beers!) This was our 4th trip to Vientiane and more hotels appear to be springing up all the time, so we probably wouldn't stay here again.
