“A good choice for a stopover in Vientiane”
Reviewed 23 January 2013

The AV is a well placed hotel, close to the major attractions and close to plenty and varied restaurants. They include free airport transfers which is a good bonus. The rooms are spacious and well fitted out. The staff were helpful and there is a good breakfast included. Parts of the hotel are beginning to look a little tired but nothing too much to worry about.
Wat Si Saket and Wat Phrea Ho Keo are a 5 minute walk away, the victory arch is about 10minutes walk. The COPE Visitor Centre at the rehabilitation centre for landmine victims is 20mınutes walk. The restaurant area is 5-10minutes walk.

AV Hotel is located within walking distance of the centre of Vientiane.Come out turn right and right again is the Presidential Palace.Walk along that road and you come to the two famous Buddhist temples. If you turn left within 20 metres is the Lao Traditional Handicraft Centre adjacent to a restaurent that offers dinner and traditional dances.Take the second left and you will pass a few traditional massage outlets.A bit further to your right as the road curves is a Scandinavian Bakery and beside it a French restaurent,The fountain on your left is the pulse of night activity-songs,food and drinkls.Walk a bit and you come to the road parallel to the Mekong River and find the fampus Joma Cafe to try scones, cakes etc and Lao Coffee.Just walk along that road and you come along an array of souvenir shops, restaurents etc.You can have Indian, Malaysian,Lao,Thai and Chinese food.At night there is an array of stalls beside the Mekong River. All these within walking distance from AV Hotel. The hotel itself is I think an old hotel refurbished. The rooms are large for a hotel. No restaurents here but you dont need them as you can just walk out and there are so many. The only problem in the hotel is mosquitoes.Ask them to spray insecticide if its a nuisance. But otherwise the rooms are clean and adequate. The staff are friendly and helpful.Good value for money.Great for couples and family but for single occupants the rooms are a bit too spacious.Good location too as I have described.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally good some are suites and you pay the same.

When we were looking for a hotel room in Vientiane, almost every budget hotel that didn't have tripadvisor warnings like "stay as far away from this hotel as possible", was fully booked. The only room we could find that wasn't ridiculously expensive was an executive suite at the AV hotel. It was over budget, but we booked it anyway. Our "executive suite with garden view" was located less than 5metres from a construction site. There was non-stop drilling that started at 7am, and lasted all day, every day. Our "garden view" meant we could look into the eyes of the builders as they walked past our window. We had to keep the drapes shut at all times. It wasn't a comfortable stay at all. I should add that this in the winter of 2012, so the construction works might be finished by now. But they might still be going on, because they were building a new house/building from scratch, so it will definitely take a long time.

Other cons. Staff was...weird. I don't know how else to describe it. They weren't friendly and they just sort of stared at you all the time. When we returned from a day out, they wouldn't say a word, they wouldn't even nod hello, they just stared. Same thing during check-in, check-out and during every breakfast. Breakfast was disappointing as well. You get 2 coupons: 1 for 1 cup of coffee and 1 for 1 glass of juice. We don't drink coffee (and they didn't have tea), and it wasn't possible to get an extra glass of orange juice instead of a cup of coffee. Ridiculous.
There was lots of staff sort of hanging around during breakfast, but they wouldn't really do anything (other than stare), they didn't keep an eye on the buffet at all. Almost every morning, we'd have to go up to them and tell them they were out of eggs or out of bread. They never noticed it themselves, never took initiative, always had to be informed that they were out of food, even though there were always about 3-4 people in charge of breakfast.

One of the most expensive places we've stayed at in Asia, with the worst sleep quality, and the least attentative staff. Wouldn't stay here again.

My wife and I spent 4 nights in AV Hotel. Big, clean room where everything was to our satisfaction, apart from a couple of minor problems with the safe and the lock of the bathroom door. The staff was friendly and very serviceminded. It was close to restaurants and bars and many of the "wats" and other tourist attractions. One negative thing was that the car car for the pick-up did not show up, in spite of a confirmation and my e-mail remider the day before our arrival. I had to call the hotel from the airport. An apology from the reception manager would have been nice ! Breakfast was OK.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden to be freferred.

Good location, walking distance to the river about 10 minutes. We were impressed of the size of the room, lots of space, small balcony, comfy bed, everything was clean.
Free WiFi, big flat screen TV (which we didn't use), 2 desks, huge doors and windows (we had a corner room) mean lots of light but it can get hot too.
We didn't like the standard breakfast buffet and found some very nice cafes right next door with fresh fruit shakes and and good food.
Airport transfer was on time both way.
Would always choose to stay again.

After a long haul flight arriving at such a clean, efficient and comfortable hotel was a blessing, OK, so it is more business like than backpacker ( think government ministries as neighbours and no pool or bar) but it is only a stone's throw away from the tourist area. We were especially impressed by the size and comfort of the beds and the fastidiousness of the cleaning staff. We were based on the third floor with beautiful views of the neighbouring garden.

Room Tip: The higher the room the better the view.

We stayed only 1 night instead of 2 nights as originally planned since our flight from Vientiane to Luang Namtha was cancelled when we arrived in Laos. Location of the hotel is great as it is within walking distance to various Wats nearby. Staff were amicable and our cancellation of 1 night was well managed without issues and refund provided since we notified them in advance of 7 days.

We had a small room with additional bed since there were 3 of us. The room looked out to a new hotel that was still in construction hence not much to be seen there except grey walls. The room was clean and good firm beds but it had a strange stale smell - likely from the paint or lack of fresh air. Good shower pressure and consistent hot shower but it is strange to have the wash basin outside the bathroom! Since there were 3 of us, I guess it made it more efficient in terms of being able to use the wash basin while one is showering.

The good thing is that the hotel provides airport transfers with adequate notice hence you can save more money there. Breakfast was the average to be found in such hotels in Laos - with selection of simple Western or porridge or noodles. Good value for money in Vientiane. For food, you can explore the many restaurants nearby the tourist belt. Turn left out from hotel and on same street about 1.5 block down, you can find a simple shop called Manivanh shop that sells excellent fruit juices and yummy sandwiches with local pickled salad as its green.

Room Tip: Try to get away from rooms that face the new hotel next door which is still in construction.
