“Do NOT Bother”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 January 2012

Hard to believe the previous reviewer gave this restaurant 5 stars!
We were checking out menus at the restaurants surrounding Nam Phu Fountain and against my better judgement, hubby chose this one.
My set menu of yellow curry chicken was tasteless, lackluster and a teeney tiny portion.Pumpkin soup starter just as bad.Hubby had a salad and pork steak w/olives.
I had flan for dessert, DH had choc. mousse. 180,000 kip for both meals was shameful.
More than the $$$ spent, was the missed opportunity to have a delicious meal.
I know we would have been happy campers back at Amphone or at Les Caves de Chateaux a few doors down.
Should have known........hardly anyone was dining here. Putting it all in perspective...I AM breathing and enjoying life.

“Tasteful with Flair!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2011

It is a wonderful thing when your expectations for a restaurant are not just met but exceeded by an order of magnitude. Nam Phu Restaurant is just such a place, indeed it would be fair to say that I actually had visions of my tastebuds doing backflips of orgiastic delight on my tongue. Where else but Laos I wonder is it possible to experience a first-class French meal including the beer, for $27.50. I may actually have found paradise. Need I say more?

Upon entry you are greeted by a tastefully decorated restaurant with an intimately lighted and warmly inviting atmosphere. Lounge music plays quietly in the background loud enough to be heard but not loud enough to interfere with conversation. Comfy well-padded cane chairs and tables round off the effect. There is also a full size bar with an impressive collection of beer, wine, liqueurs and spirits.

Service was unobtrusive and unlike many places in South East Asia the courses came out in both the appropriate order and with a decent interval in between. Portion sizes were excellent as was presentation and the menu is extensive.

The meal was outstanding. I had the Quail eggs with anchovies for an appetiser and they were good. Nicely displayed on a bed of lettuce with a side of crusty baguette slices; each warm egg half had a sliver of anchovy which married so very well with the zesty lemon and garlic vinaigrette sauce. Delightful
.
This was followed by Asparagus Salad with Smoked Duck. The duck served on a bed of mixed greens, tomato, shallot, asparagus and red cabbage; drizzled with fresh lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. The duck was cooked to perfection. A rich, deep pink, moist, melting in the mouth it was complimented by the acidity of the tomatoes and the dressing and the sweet crunch of the cabbage and asparagus. The flavours were so well balanced, married so perfectly it was truly sublime and the best dish I have eaten thus far in Asia.

The Smoked salmon with lemon butter sauce was nice but let down slightly by the fact that the salmon was slightly overcooked. Still moist but drier than it ought to be, it was seared on one side and the crispness complemented the floury potatoes well. The side salad added further crunch and really lifted the salmon to another level with its zesty lime dressing.

All in all an almost faultless dining experience and Highly Recommended.
