La Ong Dao Hotel 1
Ranked #83 of 97 Hotels in Vientiane
Reviewed 11 May 2012

La Ong Dao Hotel turned out to be quite near Wattay International Airport, Vientiane and it took a mere 30 minutes to reach it via the road alongside the great Mekong River. It is situated towards to the southerly direction from the Airport and you will have to go through the "City" or rather the town of Vientiane.

One would have thought that Vientiane to be somewhat left behind among the ASEAN countries but surprisingly, it seems to feel better than Yangoon. The roads are wide 2 or even 3 lanes dual carriageway.

La Ong Dao hotel is located near an important junction and a street with 2 Banking establishment and a "cowboy" street of retail shops of all kinds, including a few fashion and dress-making houses.

It is a 7 -storey hotel building with an adjacent connection to another building and a back-yard which appears to be a Motel like facility typical of American Motels & Inns.

The Hotel front is quite impressive by Vientiane standards and the lobby is filled with pure Teak wood big chairs and tables you find in traditional Chinese homes with intricate dragon carvings.

The reception is almost hassle free as you hand in your Hotel Voucher from Agoda and all of them can speak English of varying fluency and vocabulary.

We stayed in Twin-sharing as well as Double bed Single room of basically the same size. Both rooms have a LCD TVs, and as it is Lao, you have original Teak-wood cabinets, paneling and nice Ceramic Tiles which I prefer in tropical climates.

The ceramic tiles are of high quality and including the bathroom with good toilet bowls , shower enclosure and hot water available 24 hours. Believe you me, the water pressure is tremendous , probably, to ease the pressure building up in the ever-fast and over-flowing great Mekong River.

The beds are cosy with smooth cotton bedsheets and a blanket made in Thailand {it seems everything is made in Thailand]. However, the Air-cond has a brand of unknown make but sounds "Chinese" Peoples' Republic of China.

By the way, Lao is a Peoples Democratic Republic of Soviet Russian influence and you can blame the French intellectuals in Paris Cafe telling philosophizing the innocent Indo-Chinese peoples, in particular Ho Chi Minh.

Breakfast is at the 4th Floor Dining area [remember, it is a 7-storey hotel ] are also being used for private parties and companies' lunch meetings.

The menu for breakfast consists of Boiled White Rice, Soya Bean Curd, Shrimp Friedn Dumplings, Mixed vegetables and all the meat and poultry and fried eggs sunny side.

We are quite happy with the Vegetarian dishes and bread and margarine , coffee and tea and orange juice and local fruits like dragon-fruit, water melon, pineapple etc.

The last day of our stay breakfast was without HOT coffee or tea as the Electrical supply to the area suddenly came to a halt and returned as we checked out.

If you are looking to eat Halal Food for lunch and dinner , just take the Tuk-Tuk to bring you to Fathima, Nora, Nazim restaurants which are not far away just amre 10-20 minutes away from the Hotel.

Otherwise, buy the baguette which the only good thing the French left for Indo-China, and Halal Sardines, Tuna or whatever food you brought along. And there is high-end Mini-Market catering to the Diplomats about 20 minutes walking to the left of the junction, you find imported goods only !

Next to this Mini-mart is to be found Joma, a modern Cafe that serves coffee, tea and pastries, pizza imitating Cafes in find in major cities.

Opposite the Mini-market is a Health and Fitness club.

Otherwise, La Ong Dao is most suitable for 4 of us as it rests in between 2 Golf courses the SEA Games Golf Course [17 km] and the Lao Golf Club Km14 [14 km].

How convenient!

And do try and rent those luxury Mini-Vans [Toyota, Hyundai] or even the Toyata 4WD Hiluz and put the Golf bags at the back.
