“Let down in places for the price”
Reviewed 14 February 2010

My wife and I stayed at Settha's Palace for one night on a five night tour of Laos, initial impressions of the hotel and room were very good as It has a very five star colonial feel to it when you first walk through the door, staff are very good and pleasant, food is pretty good, pool area is fabulous but the room was a real let down, again as the hotel it was initially we thought lovely as it was a deluxe room and seemed very posh...the problems started when we finished getting washed as when we let out the bath water there was a horrendous odour coming back up the drain traps in the sink which took several hours to go away and when we went to bed at 11.30 we never slept until 3am as directly across the road at the front of the hotel was an open fronted cafe which played loud music until the middle of the night, not quite what we expected for what we paid. Maybe we were unlucky that night i dont know but we wont rush back!

Dear guest,

Warm greetings from the Settha Palace Hotel.

We thank you for your candid review and sincerely apologize for what happened during your stay with us.

You will be happy to know that, as a result of your feedback, we have identified the cause of the bad odour in the bathtub drain and rectified the problem.

We are also working with the relevant government authorities to keep the noise level from the community surrounding the hotel an acceptable level.

Yours sincerely,
Settha Palace Hotel Management

We booked Settha Palace for a two night stay. First, its probably worth just mentioning a few things about Vientiane itself. One day is more than enough to see all the sights. None of the sights are particularly outstanding. The (small) Budda Park is not worth visiting. The Budda statues there were built in the 1950's using concrete.

However if you are touring Laos then there is a good chance you might have to start or finish your trip in Vientiane and you might choose this hotel.

We asked the hotel to pick us up at the airport. The driver was waiting and escorted us to a rather old ex-london black cab. The airconditioning system in the cab was terrible and by the time we got to the hotel it felt like we were siting in a sanua. Not a good start.

The room we booked did not have the advertised facilities (such as a seperate shower or seating area). However, the bed was comfortable enough. It has a small outdoor pool area and gardens that are nice enough.

Extra's such as drinks are very expensive. Internet access is $12 for 5 hours! Breakfast was a very ordinary buffet.

Service was ok, but quite of few members of staff struggle with basic english.

The hotel itself does not offer any city tours itself, but will book one for you. We were advised that we would get an english speaking driver. He did speak a few words of english, but not really enough.

I went to the Settha Palace after 2 weeks of backpacking through Laos. I knew I would want a luxury end to my trip as I was to be trekking in the north and wanted to have a couple of days relaxing before flying home.
Settha Palace is indeed the place to do this! It is probably slightly more expensive than it should be - but for a couple of nights it's great!
The service is excellent, the swimming pool is divine and they even allowed me an extended check-out time (at no extra cost) until 6pm as my flight was not until the evening.
All in all... Thank you Settha Palace and in particular - Sisouk (customer service manager).
Tip - do not use their laundry service - it is way too overpriced and you can pay a local some much needed kip to do it if you just go for a 5 minute walk into town.

The Settha Palace is a classic colonial hotel and I'd be very surprised if there is a better hotel in Vientiane. It has been recently renovated with stylish traditional furniture and polished wood floors. The grounds have been tastefully landscaped and there is a delightful pool. For some reason the hotel had very few guests - maybe it was still off-season, although I got the impression it mainly catered for business people and diplomats.

The restaurant is very good and serves a sophisticated mix of local and French cuisine. The German chef was very helpful with his suggestions.

The staff are friendly and helpful but did not seem to speak much English. Overall a satisfactory stay and highly recommended.

We stayed here at the end of our trip around Laos and we were very pleased. The pool was great. The rooms and bathrooms were very nice. Breakfast was also good. The 4 poster beds were a plus.

I have stayed at several of the classic colonial hotels around SE Asia, and this is a very good one. The building, rooms , pool ..... etc I thought were first rate. The service can go a little astray at times (but those who give a [--] review, please remember this is Laos, and not NY or Singapore!), but the service is given with charm, a smile and the best intention.
The restaurant is a treat - the head chef (Mr Rolf), is a character - ( and be sure to get to know him, and follow his recommendations!) - food great.
The airport pick-up by London Taxi is a real hoot.
Hotel is a very short walk into the centre of town (which in reality is hard to define).

Have stayed at both Raffles hotels in Cambodia and Beijing and although this is not as big, it has a real old world charm about it.

Can not believe some of the reviews on the furniture and decor, just assume these people are more used to the naf over the top decor of places like the Burj in Dubai and don't appreciate that places like Laos are all about old colonial charm which this hotel has plenty of, or perhaps these people have sight problems!!

Service - can not fault and food good too.

If you are looking to travel back in time choose this hotel and not one of the ugly multi storey places that are going up every where.

My one request would be to have a few more Laotian artifacts about the place - here it can definitely learn from the raffles group.
