“Expensive by Lao Standards”
Reviewed 7 April 2013

On a recent cycling trip through Laos, we had cycled up highway 13 from Vientiane, and finding accomodations beyond Phon Hong was zilch. We saw the sign for the Nam Lik Eco Village with a small sign for bed in the corner and as we'd already cycled 85K in 110 deg F heat, we were wanting to find something quickly. The turnoff was another 9K (although the sign said 7K) and finding the place was not easy. Other than the 1 sign for the turnoff, then another small hard to read sign at a curve in a village, there were no more signs until we found the entrance. We'd come to a junction in the road after crossing a bridge and had no idea which way to go and had already gone the 7K indicated on the road sign on highway 13. Finally, we found the entrance and rode to the "village". Immediately, I was totally disappointed. We went down and asked the price of a bungalow and was told $25 USD for 1 person. I considered this to be extremely expensive given the fact that there was no AC, no TV, no WiFi and no hot water in the bath. We figured that we had no other option because the nearest accomodations from there was the 9K back to the main highway and then another 20K plus to the nearest guest house. Just kind of felt like we were being taken advantage of. We had cycled through southern Laos several years ago and had stayed at a basic bungalow (electricity, shower and mosquito netting) for $5 USD a night. So I have to agree with the gentleman from Berlin, that this was very expensive place to stay.

Now, given that, I do want to say that the two women who were really running the place, were extremely friendly and the young woman was a great cook! She fixed us a plate of stir fried chicken with vegetables and rice for $9 (again, very expensive).

I would not recommend the place, unless you're wanting to just sit in a hammock during the day or sit in the river.

Recently went with a friend to stay at Nam Lik Eco-village. Took the local bus to Ban Samxhoun, located about 80 km north of Vientiane, and 80 km south of Van Vieng on the main road 13. The Eco-village sent out a truck to pick us up along the red clay road. We moved through quiet friendly villages to the facility, set along a hillside of the Nam Lik River.
We were one of only two overnight clients, there were several more daytrippers that stopped in for tubbing and lunch. The place has a menu with prices in USD and by making a phone call to the owner, who was not in residence while we were there, you can set up a local adventure with a guide, or set off on your own. The facility is nice, with lots of insect, amphibian, and other specimens live and dead on view. There is a pool table and a porch overlooking the river.

The staff was extremely friendly and polite, though not much English language is spoken. One person spoke fluent French. The huts are rustic and have hot water and screens and hammocks. The hammock on the porch is a huge plus. The hike up to them is a bit intense and my friend actually fell down on a sandy step. You can probably request to stay in the huts closer to the lodge area, less steps. The room itself was not super clean and ants were eating through the ceilings, but this is the jungle, so we expected as much. The sound of the insects, frogs, and whatever else singing at night is quite the forest symphony, so bring earplugs if you are kept awake by night noises!

For the price of the room - $38 for two of us that includes breakfast - this is great value. The hiking is nice and the river is beautiful. The highlight of the trip was a 15 km kayaking trip we took on the river with a guide. Though he did not speak English, he was diligent in guiding us through rapids and keeping us safe and happy.

The only downside to the trip was the food. A bit bland and expensive.

Overall - this is a gem of a place to spend a night or two away from tourist centers with lots of options for adventure or relaxation on the river. Family friendly.

I loved it here! This unique place was one of the quirkiest and most memorable places I stayed on my cycle trip through Laos. The guy who runs it is a very cool Frenchman who has a lot of interesting stories to tell. The dining/lounge area holds an astounding collection of butterfly specimens, mostly collected in the nearby forests by the owner himself. The buildings are both artistic and eco-friendly, and this particular hippie kid felt completely at home.

The food was delicious, French style cooking. The accommodations are bungalows like American wilderness cabins on stilts. They have electricity and bathrooms. They are not the swankiest but definitely nice and well kept. The surrounding area is very lovely and mellow farm land. If you are not on a bicycle or moto you may find the dirt road approach difficult.

I had cycled up 13 from Vientiane so was happy to shake off the dust and weariness, hang out on the riverside and watch the sunset, then chat with the owner while I shoveled in some dinner. Nam Lik Eco Resort is quiet and rustic, and will appeal most to the laid-back travellers rather than the party crowd.
