We had a dinner and took a five meal cooking school the other day. Both meals were fabolous. The owner, ex chef at Mariot hotel, gave us a nice lesson on the Lao culture, customs and cooking. We choose five meals by ourself which were all delicious and not so spicy because we requested it. Also, the staff is very friendly and everything is very clean which can't be said for Vientiane itself. This was the highlight of our trip to Vientiane and we are very gratefull for it.

A beautiful restaurant on a side street just up from the Mekong River. It is hidden behind a vast array of greenery and has a lovely “cave” feel to it. There is a well stocked bar at the entrance and an extensive menu of traditional Laos dishes. Happily, they also understand English fairly well so could modify some of the dishes to cater for my vegetarian friend. The dishes are prepared fresh and taste beautiful. We ordered a large variety of meat and vegetarian dishes and each one was full of flavour, fresh and delicious. This is probably another of the top restaurants to seek out in Vientiane, along with Amphone and Laos Kitchen if you want delicious authentic food in a really charming setting.

We found the restaurant by chance and decided to give it a try because we were attracted by the fact that it had cooking classes. We were so delighted that we came back a second time during our stay in Vientiane. The restaurant is not terribly appealing - just a few tables and chairs and a visible drink cooler. However the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We particularly liked the deep fried lemongrass stuffed with minced chicken and the fried morning glory. The server was polite and efficient and on one of our visits there was live traditional music.

During our trip through Laos we encountered the opportunity to join a cooking class at Lam Pai-Bai Tong restaurant in Vientiane. We did so a couple of days after enjoying a excellent meal at the restaurant. The cooking class was truly one of our trip highlights!
You have the option of joining a morning and a afternoon class. We went for the morning one. When we arrived we encountered a beautiful table with several plates, filled with all kinds of fresh ingredients. Tea, coffee and water were served before chef Chandra joined us. He spoke at lenght about the Laos kitchen and other kitchens from around the world, explaining the differences, especially between Asian kitchens. It was very interesting and there was more than enough time for questions and sharing opinions.
Then we moved on to the ingredients themselves and the recipes. We were allowed to choose 5 dishes straight from the restaurants menu. This was in itself already a difficult task! Most of the ingredients were already chopped and cleaned so we could move on to the cooking business straight away. Amongst other dishes we choose fresh spring rolls and mok pa, steamed fish in banana leaf. Chef Chandra showed us how to prepare the dishes before we had a go at it. And it was great, although he made it look real easy :) After cooking we had a briljant lunch of our own cooked food, a delight...
Recipebook included, so there's no excuse of not trying it at home!
