“Central Location, Business type hotel, Outdated, Overpriced, Courteous Friendly Staffs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2013

Centrally located, a few minutes walk to the Mekong River in the evening to view beautifl sunset and the night market. It is a great base to explore the city, in striking distance of most touristy places and to get to the nightspots and happenings. Also, it is a favourite spot for the local people to rest and stroll leisurely in the evening. Nearby, great food everywhere at restaurants and some cheap options at street stalls. For the further away attractions, there is a tuk-tuk station outside or for taxi the hotel can book and advise the price.
Service is remarkable and staffs are friendly, courteous, patience, always smiles and speak limited English. Free wifi in room and lobby area. The room was tired and the bathroom needed freshening up but it is big, clean, good air-con with balcony overlooking the street below. Some of TV channels do not work well. Breakfast was acceptable with western and asian menu, part buffet and part cooked to order. There is also an expresso machine for coffee drinkers.
Stayed for 3 nights and considered the price paid was a bit expensive if not for the central location.

In all most instances, we have avoided booking Best Westerns anywhere in the US, & most places internationally for several years. Why? Because you absolutely NEVER know what you will encounter until you walk through the front door. There are absolutely some wonderful BW properties in Europe & the US, but they are NOT representative of the overall chain. And other than Europe, it is a total crap shoot as to what to expect. The current example is the Best Western Vientiane. Very welcoming lobby when you walk in & the staff definitely try to be helpful, but this is another example of a US hotel chain using their US presence to attract business, yet failing miserably to deliver. There was not a single, solitary employee at this hotel who could speak even basic English. None. Let me hasten to add that we do not expect hotel employees in other countries to speak English, anymore than we should be expected to speak their language. However, when a US hotel chain "hypes" their presence in other countries, then I think they assume an obligation to "at least" have some employees on duty who speak English. This hotel is yet another old, run down property that used to be another hotel, which an owner has taken over & hung the BW sign on to try to increase business. In fact, when we arrived in Vientiane, we asked at least a dozen taxi & tuk-tuk drivers to take us to the hotel, & showed them the confirmation page with the hotel name/address, & not ONE, not one, knew the hotel. So we called the hotel & was told to tell the drivers to bring us to the Hotel Taipon (?), which was the former name. Bingo. Light bulb. No problem getting us there. When you enter the room it looks OK. Obviously VERY DATED, but OK on first glance. Then you begin to notice things are not what they seem. The sofa/chain/ottoman -- dirty & worn. Nothing to invite you to sit on them. Very pretty wooden floors, but then noticed that our white socks were absolutely filthy from walking on the floors, which shows how dirty they are. So we looked for slippers & found 2 pair & decided to put them on instead. Shock. Old, worn & used & actually had hair on them, & the soles were filthy from having been worn on the same floors we were walking on. Don't remember having ever encountering a hotel where the slippers were USED & dirty. Then the bathrooms. The "white"? towels were dingy & needed to be washed in lots of bleach. And the shower curtain was "filthy" at the bottom. Apparently NEVER washed after having been hung & guest after guest after guest showering. Disgusting! Yes, this is the Best Western chain that we know, which is precisely why we avoid them like the plague in most instances.

This is our second family stay at this hotel. In a great location in the centre of the action near the river. Great food everywhere, and some cheap options at street stalls. Service is great , with clean rooms, good aircon and balcony overlooking the street. Taxi drivers always seem to find it difficult to find for some reason, We book 2 rooms for my wife and I and our two kids. Apart from the great location our other main reason for booking this hotel is the pool. Not a lot of options in Vientiane if you want to be in the middle of the city with a pool, which we find essential when traveling with kids in these hot climates. Price is a bit expensive when compared to some other options around Vientiane, but if you want a pool in the middle of the city, you don't have many options. This is our second stay here, so obviously we think it is very reasonable. Happily recommend it to others if you want a pool.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room if you like to have a beer and people watch, or if you like it a bit quieter...

This hotel is right in the heart of all the action or within walking distance of it. The full breakfast in the morning is vey good! I high recommend the peppercorn steak for dinner at the hotel! The Me Kong River is only a minute or two walk away as well as the night market. There is a 24 hour market around the corner. A lots of restaurants within walking distance.

The rooms are very nice. A/C however some of TV channels do not work well, bed is nice and clean. The pillows are kinda hard not very soft. Free WIFI in rooms and lobby area.

I hope this helps. The price was very reasonable.

There will be a loud noise in the morning however its only the garage truck coming down the street.

Room Tip: Room 402- if you look the window you can see a Buddhist Temple

Nice clean room with comfortable beds. Located right in the city centre with lots of restaurants nearby, but very quiet area. A few minutes walk to the Night Market and Mekong river. The only downside was the bathroom where the water supply is faulty and sometimes no hot water. Breakfast was good with western and Asian menu, and the service from staff very efficient. Would revisit this hotel again on my next trip.
