“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 24 February 2011

Just check in today, comfy rooms with international standard set up, affordable price, fast internet connection and most of all very professional staff.
Located in a road with many restaurants and eateries, very good location very close to the river mekong.

I visit Vientiane on business maybe once or twice a year and I always stay at the Taipan (it's recently become affiliated to Best Western but it's still the Taipan to me). I'm sure it's not the most comfortable or well-appointed hotel in Vientiane, but it's not bad. The prices have gone up a little now that it's Best Western (my room + breakfast was US$ 67 inclusive as opposed to US$ 58 this time last year) but it's still very reasonably priced for what you get. The rooms now have big flat screen TVs and decent reception too. The wi-fi wasn't working this last visit but the plug-in LAN cable worked a treat and is free. Vientiane has a surprisingly good 3G network so it's also possible to buy a card or dongle and use that.

I always ask for a room overlooking the street at the front of the hotel - they're brighter, although there's not much to look at per se. Sadly the riverside bars and restaurants that used to grace the Mekong bank 30 seconds walk from the hotel entrance are all gone: there is a major project underway to build a new road and a public park along several km of the riverfront.

The restaurant has excellent and very reasonably priced food, both Western and Asian (Vietnamese dishes are a recent and welcome addition). Eat out, and there's an excellent Italian restaurant (Aria) just down the street, a good French restaurant (La Terrasse) in Nokkeokumarn Street, one block along from the hotel, and you're only 5 minutes walk from the Nam Phou fountain and the restaurants there.

Laos is not somewhere that you go to get five-star service; don't expect too much and then you'll avoid disappointment. As reviewers of Vientiane hotels generally note, prices are high for what you get.

I've mixed feelings about this hotel. It is in a very good location with walking distance from many attractions of Vientiane. The rooms are just OK and the staff very friendly and eager to help. On the other side the hotel is really basic not the best for business but maybe good for a short leisure stay. There were some shot power cuts during my stay there (nothing really serious) and almost no Internet at all (because of problems with their server).

It’s not so much that the Tai Pan is a bad deal, as much as it is that the Tai Pan is a dumb deal. This hotel was a logical option 15 years ago when there was virtually nothing else in town. Now, however, the Tai Pan has been left caught somewhere in the middle of the scale where management has decided to set the rack rate up near the top to compete with the Novotel Vientiane and the Settha Palace Hotel. The only problem is – the Tai Pan simply can’t compete.

The staff has limited skills and abilities and they work in a hotel that appears to have been built and furnished by someone’s brother-in-law. On the surface the hotel is pleasant enough but close inspection reveals a ragged edge that suggests the better days are long gone. The makeshift floor plan of the complex suggests jerry rigged additions over the years. Though the additions are not to the same scale and not on the same grade, a layer of frayed, cheap green carpet ties it all together and provides a motif that can be described as… downtrodden.

Back when the state owned Lane Xiang was offering Soviet-era hospitality the Tai Pan was a welcome option with hot water in every room, beds with all four legs, and a restaurant that offered up dishes less exotic than baked pangolin. In the almost two decades since, the Tai Pan hasn’t really altered the business plan so they are still attempting to compete on the strength of their service being better than the Lane Xiang and their menu being devoid of endangered species.

The Tai Pan is bad value for money. Just below the Tai Pan are a number of smaller, simpler hotels that offer the same amenities and quality for half the price. Or for $15 to $20 more per night one can stay in a hotel such as the Settha Palace – which offers quality and service on par with the world standard. Why opt for the nondescript, gray, slightly odiferous middling quality of the Tai Pan?

If you do end up staying in the Tai Pan – avoid upper level rooms that face the West – from mid afternoon until sundown the sun beats down on the exposed exterior wall and overpowers the air-conditioning. Anyone staying in those rooms through the afternoon is in for a sweaty time.

We stayed for 3 nights prior to crossing back into Thailand. The junior suite was spacious and very clean, view from the large window was limited to the rear of neighbouring buildings, but allowed plenty of sunlight.
We could point out that some of the public areas, hallways and poolside were looking tired and could have done with a little tlc.
But I would not want to put you off staying here.
Although IT was available in the reception, at a small cost I hired a PC and printer for 24 hours - it was delivered to our room - an excellent facility.
Breakfast was to a good standard and the fact that we didn't always get what we wanted was more to do with my lack of the Laos language than a shortcoming of the staff.
The hotel was ideally located to walk to all points of interest in this City.
Many good restaurants within easy reach.
Staff at the hotel were first class.
