“A good choice for business travel in UB”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2012

I was impressed with this hotel. Having not been there for over a decade, I spent some time researching where to stay in UB on Tripadvisor. I noted the generally negative opinions of the city's hotel options, and that the Kempinski is not on a par with hotels in other countries with the same name. That said, and it is true that this Kempinski is not of the 5-star calibre of others, it was certainly a pleasant surprise. It is perfectly comfortable with large rooms, that, with the windows closed, were very quiet. The bathroom was fine, with strong hot water available at all times that I was there. The restaurants were good. I ate well both at dinner and at breakfast. The staff in particular were particularly attentive and helpful. I was even given the use of a local mobile phone and number gratis for the duration of my stay, and offered the use of an iPad too. There was good access to free wifi on all floors.

It is a little off from the town centre, which means there is not much to see in the immediate neighbourhood and one would need transportation to get around town. I asked both a local colleague and the front desk if I could go for a stroll in the evening and both said it was unadvisable. Nonetheless I did go for a wander one evening (before dark, which is around 9pm in the summer), and there were plenty of people about and it all looked very safe. Although, to be honest, there wasn't anything to see really.

The gym is simple and the sauna small, but if one really needed to use either I am sure they would suffice.

Room Tip: I would recommend trying to get a room on a higher floor and looking out toward the back, although t...

I have stayed at the Kempinski in UB a number of times of the last 2 years. If you have stayed at other Kempinski's in Europe, you will be very disappointed by this one. It is nowhere near the standard of its brothers/sisters in Europe. Having said that, I still think it is the best Western-standard hotel in UB. It is a bit far away from the central square, and taxis are hard to find, but I think it is worth it. The staff are attentive and the food is quite good. In addition, Hennesy's restaurant is just behind the hotel ... and this is a real advantage. Noise from raucus parties in the ground floor restaurants can be considerable .. especially close to Christmas. If possible, try to get a room on a higher floor. UB is a challenging city, and is becoming more dangerous as times go by. The traffic is awful .... as is the air quality in winter. If you are staying for a while, it is good to have a reasonable standard of hotel. The Kempinski fits the bill for a longer stay.

Didn't know what to expect, but found this hotel to be comfortable, safe & clean. The staff was friendly and the food was good. My American contacts who live in ULB warned me the toilet paper might be rough and brown, so I brought some along just in case - but no need. It was just fine here. The room was very large & clean, with a big bed (which, as I recall, was quite firm - maybe a bit too firm). The breakfast buffet was fine, and I enjoyed the other hotel restaurant for two meals. Not much to walk around and see, but I did go up the street a short way. There were a couple of small cafes and a small grocery store. Traveled here alone, stayed several nights in October 2010.

The Kempinski is a bit older and from the outside a bit un-stylish, but has been nicely renovated inside. Location is slightly outside and not very good regarding the catastrophic traffic but UB is not too big.
The hotel has all the amenities you would expect from a Western Business Hotel, staff is friendly and helpful. It is very clean and comfortable.

As said currently only 2 Hotels in UB that satisfy Western Standards, the other one being the new Renaissance, a Shangri La is in building.

Roomrates are rather expensive for what is offered, but this is UB.

The breakfast is awesome and again good food is someone you will ache for after a few days of local "Haute Cuisine".

If you can afford it and get a free room, go for it.

Most hotels in UB have beds that are about as comfortable as sleeping on a concrete slab. The Kempinski is a great hotel, excellent gym, good breakfast etc. It is further from the airport than other hotels I've used in UB, but worth it for the bed comfort! Sadly, my company moved offices and now I'm back to sleeping on slabs of concrete.

Second stay at the Kempinski in UB, and I was glad I could get a room there as all my other hotel experiences in UB have been pretty dire.
The Junior Suite is definitely big and convenient. Internet speed is way too slow for anything other than mails. Service is quite competent and willing to help.
Can't wait to the opening of the Shangri La (next year) and the hotel in the Blue Sky Tower (March 2012...supposedly) though!

The hotel is a good business hotel. Clean, good restaurants, very good staff. The gym is a little lacking, but they have treadmills, a bike and an elliptical trainer. The location is a bit far from the centre.

The network is poor at the hotel. The speed is acceptable, but the connection keeps being reset making skype calls difficult.
