“Excellent hotel, but slightly outside the center”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

The Kempinski Hotel Khan Palace is a very nice hotel, offering clean and well-designed rooms. The breakfast buffet, included in the room price, was simply excellent, with a great selection of food, although the service could be slightly faster (it took me for example 15 minutes to get Japanese ramen which were proposed at the buffet).
The staff is effective, when no hot water was available in the city one evening, measures were taken to get an alternative source of hot water within 30 minutes. Good wifi available everywhere.
So while this is an excellent choice, be simply aware that it is outside the city center, about 20 minutes by foot (taxis and direct bus lines are an excellent and cheap option).

Had the occasion to be able to stay at the Kempinski both before and intermittently during a scheduled tour. I have read some of the other reviews and I, too, had the occasion to be in a variety of rooms - including a junior suite.

All the rooms were nice and clean - never had the heebie jeebies with the thought of running around barefoot. Everything in the room worked and found that consistent through the four rooms I was in over a period of three weeks.

Yes, the elevators are small, but they worked and there was always another one that came along:)

Found the staff always willing to bend over backwards to help and/or answer questions/give directions. The State Department Store and the Square, Black Market, are not that far away and the hotel is actually very well located for convenience. Be advised, though - we had inquired about potential taxi fare and everything we inquired about was "just" a 15 minute walk and unless you have speed walking training, the State Dept. Store is really more like a 30-45 minute walk, depending on who you're with Not the end of the world certainly, but a good detail to know.
Hotel close to several markets so you can get plenty of nibbles, drinks. Also very close to Intellectual Museum which I'd kind of pooh-poohed the idea of going there, but it was absolutely fantastic. It's mostly puzzles and the most upper floors contain some of the most fantastic detailed work I've ever seen. If I knew it was that good, would have insisted on starting at the top.

The breakfast buffet was always outstanding and only one time did the restaurant look like it had been hit by a horde of locusts - think they'd had a huge influx of guests the night before, and that certainly was not an every day thing by any means.

The restaurant which was open in the evenings had outstanding service and even though the servers may not have always understood my English (and my Mongolian is non-existent) always managed to be exceedingly helpful. The presentation was impeccable and it was nice not to feel like you have to bolt your food and be rushed. You could tell their motto was dining was to be an experience to be savored.

My recommendation would be yes yes, any time!

If you are looking for a typical European Kempinski, you may be disappointed. However, the hotel is clean, rooms are very well furnished. Small hotel with a very small elevator. Front desk/lobby small. Staff has difficulty with English. Service during busy times can be quite spotty. Food quality is average. Very nice breakfast buffet - well worth. Breakfast room ambiance is a little odd - but quality and selection of food is good. Probably the best hotel in the city. Location is busy - conveniences around. But it is a ways away from the main square.

Room Tip: Hotel is on a busy street, so can be noisy with windows open.

Stayed there 6 nights in 3 different rooms. Deluxe rooms size varies from small to large. Large room spacious, good bed and great bathroom. The breakfast buffet is very extensive with great service. Floors 3 and 4 noisy on the back because of other hotel across parking lot. I wanted higher floor but 6 was as high as they would give me. Go for floors 7 and above. Much better view and quieter .

Room Tip: The higher the better 7 and up. 3 and 4 very noisy.

Kempinski, aside from having big rooms with a small space serving like a living room (with a 2-seater sofa and coffee table), office space, and a heated toilet, is the most thoughtful hotel I have stayed in. Aside from the usual provisions you will find shoe shine amenities and lint remover, his and hers slippers. I was feeling a bit cold so I requested for a thicker bath gown and it was thick! They have a/c, radiator and also humidifiers in the room. But the best feature for me is the fact that you can borrow a mobile phone with a local sim card (with a load of MNT5,000 enough to last a week) absolutely free. If you've used up all the load you can just ask for a top-up, reload, again for free. And the price is most reasonable. There are newer, more modern hotels in UB, most will cost more, but I will always come back to Kempinski. The staff service is very good and the decor is superb. While it is not in the city center, it is not so far at some 10mins walk. Will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: borrow a phone from the front desk for free
