Not sure what to think of this place. I got the impression that they didn't have the funds to renovate. I think they had a lot of nerve asking for extra fees to take photos. A lot of it looked a bit run down. Some of the buildings had some great displays, though it was a bit repetitive at times. There looked to be a nice German restaurant across the street too ! Hope this review helped.

Dear jbscram,

Thank you for your review and for visiting our museum. We're glad you enjoyed the buildings and displays.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the indoor photography tax. We are instructed by the Mongolian Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Sport to charge thusly to prevent damages caused by camera flashes. We are currently working on reducing the indoor photography tax price for flash cameras and removing the indoor photography tax for mobile phones without flash, which is estimated to be in effect before the end of the 2018 Summer Schedule (September 15, 2018).

This would have been a nice museum if they didn´t try to rip-off the tourists wanting to take photos. First there was an entrance fee (reasonable) and we went on a guided tour that was included. Unfortunately the guide spoke very poor English and was really difficult to understand. When we were about to leave we were told we had to pay 50,000 MNT each for the photos we had taken, which is more than $20 USD. We were a group of 25 people, that would have been $500 USD!!! Unfortunately, this ruined the whole experience for us. It was a nice museum but we were just angry and disappointed when we left.

I’m not going to give a good rating for a place that doesn’t allow you to take photos! It is ridiculous. First we were conned as this place was to be part of our city tour but then they said it was closed. We went back ourselves and then a worker yelled at me when I took out my phone. We were already there so we did go inside but I was already in a bad mood lol because of it so I wished we would have skipped this place.

Breathtaking temples, and a very interesting museum in what used to be the Winter palace of the Bogd Khan.

Go there in the afternoon after your visit to the monastery and Chojin lama museum. It gives a nice glimpse of the local culture, values and architecture as well arts.
