“A big place, nothing special”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

One of the unique thing to see when visit UB. To take a photo in front of GK or the Sukhbaatar statue, that is al. The surrounding building around the place are from the soviet time and rich, specially the opera and theater, it looks strange compared to the new and modern building like the blue sky hotel in front.

“Even Better at Night”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

It's a huge square where the statue of their national hero can be found in the middle. The place is beautiful in the morning and wonderful in the evening, as the buildings are surrounded by awesome lights that blend well into the evening. There are always many people (even late at night) so make sure you take care of your belongings. In the morning, you can get inside Grand Khural and enter the museum. Otherwise, the whole place is surrounded by just about anything you can think of.

Tip: if you go near Sukhbaatar's statue, you'd find a small circle with a star inside which is actually the absolute center of Ulaanbaatar...the heart of the city.

“Another square”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

Just like any other "square" in the world. An empty flat area with few statue or monument. It's not like to say it is not worth to come here, but at least you will know what will to going to see here.

“The Hearbeat of the nation; its all here.”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

This is the heart of Mongolia. The Square offers so much to the traveler: a beautiful example of Communist era Stalinist architecture – Stalin's Neo-renaissance, also referred to as Stalinist Empire style, or Socialist Classicism (between 1933 -1955).

The Square is comprised of a statue of National hero Damdinii Sükhbaatar ("Father of Mongolia's Revolution" / founding member of the Mongolian People's Party and leader) and a huge statue of Genghis Khan (reminiscent of the Lincoln Memorial) at the front of the Grand Khural (parliament). There is a constant parade of politicians, soldiers, tourists and starving artists hawking Mongol art. Its a photographer's paradise.

I had a ring side seat from my hotel room at the Best Western Tuushin Hotel, located a block away, but still felt compelled to spend time walking around the square to take the pulse of the Mongolian people.

It appears safe and family oriented; it is a joy to observe from near and afar. Its remarkable how sweet these people are.

“Sukhbaatar Square”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

I beautiful Communist era square with statue of National hero Sukhbaatar in the middle, and a huge statue of Genghis Khan at the front of the Grand Khural (parliament) building. Mix of grand old and spectacular new architecture around the square. Restaurants/pubs nearby in Central Tower (The Square Pub and Restaurant), Blue Sky Hotel, Grand Khan Irish Pub/Restaurant and Bangkok Thai Restaurant with view onto square. Best to avoid if any demonstrations going on.
