“A Fantastic B&B in Colombo”
Reviewed 21 November 2011

The name of this B&B is very accurate! It's most definitely a haven from the hustle and bustle of Colombo! We stayed in the Margossa Den room for the first 3 nights of our 2 & 1/2 week trip to Sri Lanka.

We arranged airport collection through Colombo Haven, which went without a hitch. Despite a delay to our flight our driver was waiting for us at the airport and took us right to the door of Colombo Haven. Our driver was quiet and didn't speak much English but he was very friendly. I'm really glad we did this as catching the bus would have been pretty daunting upon first arrival (the roads, traffic & manner of driving were quite a shock). The journey took us a couple of hours as the traffic was quite bad. The B&B is off the main Galle Road, down a minor road, we were a bit dubious about it when the driver reversed down (due to no turning space!) but soon found it to feel quite safe. Being set back off the main road also dulled down the traffic noise.

John and his wife greeted us and made us feel very welcome and at home. The freshly made fruit juice was amazing! Our Room was spacious, clean and well furnished. It had all the essentials with lots of added extras (Air Con, bowl of fruit, tea & coffee making facilities, mossie repellant & a fridge). It also had a lovely terrace garden which was well cared for. The only problem we experienced was with a minor leak in the roof - but to be honest, the Rain was so heavy, I don't know how any roof would have coped!

To get us started John gave us some great initial suggestions on what to see in Colombo, good places to eat, how to get around etc. Then later, over a delicious breakfast he helped us to plan the rest of our trip by advising on the must see places and critically, the best way of travelling between each of them (bus, train, car & driver etc). He had an excellent knowledge of the Island and his wife kindly documented it all in a rough itineray for us.

John's wife cooked us 2 delicious breakfasts, with a mix of western and Sri lankan foods. There was so much food, we didn't need to eat lunch. They were very flexible with timings and would sit with us to talk through our plans while we ate.

All of the key sites within Colombo are within walking distance of the B&B, but with the heat & humidity we often used Tuk Tuks.

This was one of the more expensive places we stayed during our trip but for Colombo, it was very reasonable.

If you stay here - don't forget to visit the Carnival Ice Cream Parlour!

Thank-you for a wonderful couple of days and for the great advice that helped to shape our trip to Sri Lanka.

John - we'll email you some pics of our trip soon!

I stayed for 11 nights with my son at the begining and then by myself. John & Sharmali were lovely people and hosted us with warmth and made us feel at home.
I loved the homely environment and delicious breakfast with a spread, fresh fruits and juice. Sharmali came with me to places where I needed guidance. The room I stayed was Margossa Den and it is very spacious with a separate bathroom. When ever I needed a dinner they gave that too. They helped me in everyway when I was in need of assistance.
If I had to go again I will go and stay there. Thank you.

I was very happy to receive an email from Colombo Haven Bed & Breakfast confirming my booking for the Palmyrah Den on the night I was to arrive in Colombo. Their response was quick and polite. This was in strong contrast to my experience when I arrived at their establishment at 1am (after advising them I was arriving at this time from Australia). The website directions made it easy for the cab driver to find the place. After 30 mins of ringing the door bell and calling the provided phone number, we gave up on the Colombo Haven B & B and were left to wander Galle Rd Colombo at 2am to find another hotel.

Luckily the Juliana Hotel down the room saved us.

I can't tell you what the rooms were like at the Colombo Haven B & B. The outside foyer looked nice in the dark. I would recommend booking a hotel with 24 hour reception rather than this establishment if you are arriving into Colombo late at night.

Dear "P0lecat",
We are extremely sorry about your experience. We are really not sure what happened since we have 24 hr reception (manager John and Shymali live on premise). We were wondering what happened to your booking and thought it was a "no show". If you did arrive at the right location (I am hoping you did), and we didn't answer, I just can't apologise enough for it.

Since you didn't get a chance to experience our hospitality, I would offer you a free night's stay the next time you are in Colombo. I know that it doesn't make up for your inconvenience, but that's the least we can do.

Once again my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused, even though we still can't understand how it happened.

though we only stayed overnight in Colombo Haven (Margossa Den) we felt the warm welcome Shyamali gave us (i love her fresh fruit juices). The room was big, cozy and fabulously decorated. It has its own balcony (green house) to smell and feel the fresh air early in the morning.

John was so accommodating and helped us with our every day itinerary and gave us a good car for our distant travel. (Thank you for our everyday safe travel. For our first 2 day trip with John and last 2 day trip with Faisal)

Thank you everyone for making our Sri Lanka trip amazing!

Thanks to Jonathan as well...

We flew into Sri Lanka and John and his wife met us at the airport at 0200! It felt like they were our personal trip advisors (and we needed them). Altho we made extensive plans before our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka, John got us the best deals on drivers and anything we needed. The breakfasts were huge, diverse and a blend of Sri Lankan and western food. Our room was the Margossa Den and we walked out on the balcony garden to hear the morning call to prayer and the national anthem played from the distant street speakers. We used the Colombo Haven as our Home Base as we rested there after 24 hours of flying, visited the Cultural triangle for 4 days and returned to the Colombo Haven, and then went to Galle for a week and returned to the Colombo Haven the day before we flew away. We left Sri Lanka refreshed and grateful for our new friends at Colombo Haven.

Room Tip: The Margossa Den was the whole top floor and our own bathroom.
