We had a very nice room with all what you might need (warm water, AC, fridge etc.)
The hotel staff was very kind and supportive.
It is better to avoid ordering beef in the restaurant, the staff try to explain You a beef meal is OK even if you can't cut it with your knife. And they consider to be OK to charge for such a meal...

Room Tip: There is no elevator.

Very nice hotel that gives colonial feeling. Comfortable rooms with AC, helpful staff. Hotel is a bit our of the center with not many dinning options around however food in restaurant is reasonable priced and tasty or you can take a tuk tuk for 100-150 rupees to central area. Good for a budget traveller

The hotel is 60 years old as told to me by someone. But the upkeep of the hotel is excellent and probably they have renovated it. Good thing its in the center of the city and all the places of interest are close by including food joints. Though hotel also inhouse a restaurant.
Service is good and prompt.

Only cons is. I found little smell in my room but anyways that was manageable .
Rates are reasonable.
It a good no frills hotel in the city.

We were impressed at the very outset when immediately after booking (family of 4, 2 rooms, Dec 2013), we promptly got a mail asking if we'd like an airport pick up. The rate was a very reasonable $25, and they also clearly mentioned there'd be $2.5 extra for using the newly constructed airport expressway, which is optional. It felt good to be taken care of when we arrived late in the wee hours of the night. We were really thankful on being allowed to check in early at 4am free of charge and catch some sleep for the day ahead, only having to wait a couple of hours for our 2nd room to get free. The rooms were clean and well maintained as were the bathrooms. Over the next few days, we felt ourselves being drawn into and falling in love with the place. The restaurant, the food and the courtyard-like backdrop is lovely. Everyone - from the receptionist to the guard on duty to the room service boys - exudes immense warmth which really comes across.
But most of all, we can never be thankful enough to the wonderful couple who own the hotel - Mr Dinesh and Ms Sumudu DeSilva. We came to Shalimar thrice (on entering Colombo; after a trip to Kandy, the Hill Country and Ancient Cities; and finally after having covered the west and the south and just before flying back), and each time felt like homecoming. Mr Dinesh also arranged for our car (they have an excellent fleet of brand new and very comfortable Toyota Priuses and vans) and driver, who doubled up as our guide (who again we grew extremely attached to) for 3 days.
Yet another major plus about Shalimar is its proximity to the Maradana railway station, the terminal railway station in Colombo (it's a walk of less than a minute!). On Mr Dinesh's instructions, one of the people even booked us our tickets to Galle. After we returned and just before heading back for the airport, we kept our luggage and relaxed at the lobby with Mr Dinesh for company, who provided for our car again and saw us off. And oh, we even got a sneak peak into the specially done up room where a big upcoming Bollywood movie was recently shot! How cool is that?!
For making our trip so memorable, for their impeccable personal touch, and for making us feel so blessed and taken care of, we would recommend Shalimar Hotel a thousand times over, and of course go back ourselves whenever we visit Sri Lanka next...

At first my room seemed shabby & dank, but soon I realized the hotel is from another era, and they have preserved its historic heritage and feeling. The service staff, especially in the upstairs dining room, are all gentle and sweet. They only want to please and help you. The hotel guests are not just white people -- visitors from other parts of Sri Lanka and India also stay there, which makes it very enjoyable. The food is delicious – be sure to request the Sri Lankan breakfast (need to order in advance). They offer a driver to meet you at the airport, even though I arrived in the middle of the night. Also befriended a tuk tuk driver named Dilan Rasanga. He works for the Tourism Bureau and speaks excellent English. He knows so much history and culture and great restaurants, and he will take perfect care of you and help you with much more than transportation. Ask the hotel to call him and he will be your personal assistant with anything you need: 071 539 8484

Room is very big with a living room

AC works.

Provide only one bottle water per day

Breakfast is really bad. I almost cannot find anything to eat.

Service is not good enough for a hotel

However, this is the lowest price hotel I can find in the city
