The Ocean Front is a small boutique hotel tucked in a corner of one of the busiest areas of colombo. Its got an excellent location right in front of the sea and the train tracks. If you dont like the noise of trains then this ones not for you. But for us it was beautiful to wake up in the mornings to the sound of waves and trains. We arrived in this hotel pretty late at night when they were having some problem with the water connection. So we were made to wait in the lobby for almost an hour. Annoying but the manager was very apologetic about it and gave us free drinks and snacks to pass our time. We stayed in this hotel for 1 night before heading to Kalutara and another night on our way back. The room that we got on the first night was small and the windows did not have any locks. However it was neat and clean and the beds were very comfortable. The room that we got on our way back was really big with a balcony right outside which had a jacuzzi and over looked the sea. The food was pretty decent too, nothing out of the ordinary. The chef would go out of his way to make special dishes only for us. Overall it was a pleasant stay , the staff was very friendly. However it was not worth the price we paid for it. With a little extra money we could have booked a Hilton or a Taj Samudra!!

Can't say enough good things about the staff at this hotel - they really made our stay. Our flight arrived very late in the evening (or early in the morning) and we didn't arrive at the hotel until 3AM. The staff stayed up waiting for us and made sure we were properly settled before turning in for the night. We requested the traditional Sri Lankan breakfast of string hoppers and it was delicious! Even when we brought back fruit from Pettah market, the staff were able to juice the fruit for us and prepare it on a beautifully arranged tray.

The breakfast was so good that when we met up with our friends in Colombo they insisted on having breakfast with us. The hotel was very accommodating and were able to fit in five additional breakfast portions on short notice.

The location is also great - it is around 170 rupees in a tuk tuk to the Old Dutch Hospital for dinner, and Galle Face Green is just a short hop away.

The only thing is that there is a nightclub just down the street that can be a bit noisy, but we were so tuckered out from traveling around anyway that it didn't really bother our sleep. Also the train runs right across the street along the ocean front from the hotel, but I thought that was more charming rather than intrusive.

This was the first hotel we stayed in on our recent trip to Sri Lanka, and we booked it online from the UK, wanting somewhere reasonable to stay for our first few two nights while we found our feet.

The Manager and staff were lovely - but I have yet to stay anywhere in Sri Lanka where this isn't the case! They were very honest about the fact that Booking.com had over charged us (as one of the rooms we booked was single occupancy), so we got a free breakfast each. This was a nice surprise - they didn't need to say anything as were unaware that we'd paid too much.

The hotel is a lot smaller than it appears on Booking.com, but it is nicely decorated and minimal, with big bedrooms and nice bathrooms. There's even a Jacuzzi on the terrace, which we weren't expecting. The rooms have hot water and air con, as well as ceiling fans. They have lovely high ceilings too, and lots of cool batik hangings and polished concrete.

There were only two cons:

- the food is very overpriced (especially the breakfasts), so we only ate the freebie!
- there is a nightclub a couple of streets down that plays very loud music all night. The Manager has been endeavouring to get this sorted through the police and local council as the club is operating without proper soundproofing, but if you are a light sleeper, or have small children, it might not be the best choice.
- the coastal train line is also directly out front, and with trains running from quite early in the morning until the evening, this also caused sound pollution.

All in all, a nice, very clean, friendly hotel in a good location which would benefit from improved secondary glazing and reduced prices in the restaurant.

Room Tip: If there are rooms at the back - choose these. I didn't check as I used ear plugs.

We stayed 3 nights in Colombo and picked this hotel because of the location. Staff in the hotel were super helpful and always happy to assist with any kind of requests. Really liked room and the view is to die for. From the balcony you can see the Indian ocean. Even there is railway along the sea side if was not noisy at all. There is also a Jacuzzi on the roof terrace which is a good relax after hot day in capital. I can recommend this place and will certainly return there on my next visit later this year.

We are from New Zealand and stayed here for 5 nights and from the moment we walked in to the moment we left we were treated to excellent service from all of the staff.
The rooms were very clean and fresh.
The food at The Ocean Front was great and made fresh each time.
If I went back to Sri Lanka I would stay here again. The staff were very helpful with everything. It's quite central and there are tuk tuks everywhere to get about. Top rating from us. :-)

We enjoyed our time at The Ocean Front Hotel as our jumping off point in Sri Lanka. The hotel was about 45-60 minutes from the international airport, and I believe we paid around $25.00. We went to a fixed price counter and did not spend time trying to negotiate a price because we were just ready to be off the airplane and to our first destination. We stayed in room 202 with three adults. We paid for an extra bed, which was probably the worst part of our stay at this hotel. The rollaway bed was awfully uncomfortable, and you could feel the bars under you as you slept. However, this is not atypical of rollaway beds and after a day of exploring Colombo we were tired enough to sleep on it. When we checked in to the hotel it was about 15 minutes before check in time. They gave us a welcome drink and a cool towel, and we enjoyed the views from the sofa area.

The room had a lot of power outlets, and they even had a power strip which was great for travellers with lots of things to charge up (phones, iPads, cameras). The room had a safe which we did not feel the need to use, and towels/shampoo/conditioner were provided. The view from room 202 did not look directly out on the ocean. Rather, you had a direct view of a building that is either crumbling or being constructed next door. There was no noise, and the water was visible at the right angle. This was not a major issue for us, but if it is important to you then you might ask to not be in room 202. We did, however, not notice any noise from passing trains. The room had a TV that we didn't use and a minifridge. The minifridge was great to keep our drinks cold. The hotel provides a water bottle each day for each person staying in the room. The room was cleaned on the second day of our visit. The water pressure was great and hot water was never a problem. My travel companions like very hot showers and we never ran out. There were quite a few ants on the counter in our room, but we were not bothered by this at all. The AC worked great.

The rooftop had a beautiful view and a table with a few chairs. There was a jacuzzi that we did not use, but looked fairly clean. The breakfast area was nice, but not air conditioned. It was sometimes stuffy, but not uncomfortable. Breakfast is about $10 USD and is quite good. You can get juice, coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt, cereal, bacon, eggs. The staff was always very pleasant. They were helpful and kind, always smiling. They were definitely one of the best elements of this hotel. They had nice suggestions for restaurants and were helpful in setting up transport as requested.

The location is good, and we took a tuk tuk to the Dutch Hospital for 200Rs. We did negotiate this price, though we weren't very firm so it might be cheaper if you push. However, we thought that at just over $1.25 USD it was a fair price.

I would stay at this hotel again. The staff were very kind and helpful, and the hotel felt safe and clean. We enjoyed our time at this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 202 has a view of a building next door

We paid 120 euros per night while we consider that they should not charge more than 50. Very noisy with no sound proof whatsoever. Window blinds were not sufficient so we were waking up very early. Personnel was very nice and polite.
