“Nice hotel, great staff”
Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

This hotel provides basic accommodation in colombo that was very nice for the price we paid. Clean room, nice bathroom, good air conditioner, and tasty breakfast. The staff was very accommodating and helped tell us where to go in our one day in colombo and schedule a car to the airport. The hotel is also right on the water and has a pretty view, and also has a nice looking jacuzzi on the roof.

The only real knock on the hotel is that, while it is in a safe area, it's not necessary in a nice area. It took us a while walking around to find a nice place for dinner.

Thank you for your kind words. We are sorry that we did not know that you were looking for a nice restaurant or cafe to eat. There are so many of Colombo's finest in very close(walking) proximity where we could have guided you to. Central Colombo can be a bit hard to navigate without some guidance. Hope we have the pleasure of hosting you again soon.

I arrived at The Ocean Front Hotel well after dark. The reception was personal and friendly as we were shown to our 2nd floor ocean-front room.
The highlight of our experience at The Ocean Front was when we dropped in after our early morning trip from Kandy and asked whether we could deposit our luggage there for the day while we take the tour of the city awaiting our midnight flight out of Sri Lanka. We were not only warmly welcome, but were offered tea and coffee and a room to freshen up later in the afternoon at no charge. In addition, the manager in charge also gave us tips of where to go and where to eat.
That was just sensational. We will definitely recommend this hotel to friends!

Room Tip: Ask for a room fronting the ocean.

This is the first Hotel we stayed in our trip and
We stayed 2 nights in Colombo and picked this hotel because of the location. Staff in the hotel were super helpful and always happy to assist with any kind of requests. Really liked room and the view is to die for.

view From the upper deck you can see the Indian ocean. Even there is railway along the sea side if was not noisy at all. There is also a Jacuzzi on the upper deck which is a good relax after hot day in capital. I can recommend this place and will certainly return there on my next visit

Room Tip: Try to get a room from the upper deck near to Jacuzzi

This was the second time I stayed at The Ocean Front Hotel. Last year we stayed for five nights, this time it was for a shorter stay of two. The choice was between more established hotels such as Galle Face, Cinnamon or Hilton and this somewhat more boutique/low-key place. The question I always ask myself when looking for something int he four/five-star range is how much will I be paying for facilities that I am unlikely to use (gym, pool, tennis court, etc). It depends on the trip one is on of course and in this particular case it looked like I would not be spending much time in the hotel. Ocean Front Hotel is ideal for that. It does do breakfast and it does have a small selection of items for room delivery but besides that there is nothing much else the hotel offers beyond rooms (although there is a small jacuzzi on the rooftop). The rooms themselves are not particularly large but I wouldn't call them small either. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean and the bathrooms well put together. All in all this is a typical boutique-type of place which kind of offers what one could expect for the price range of 85-110 dollars. My room was on the front/ocean-facing side of the hotel this time. This is something you need to consider if this works for you as the railroad is right opposite the road and the trains can clearly be heard. Obviously passenger trains won't run at night but occasionally there might be a freight train. Also with the sun pounding on the front side of the hotel the room can get quite warm and as such it may take a bit longer for it to cool down if you keep the a/c off during the day. One point I made in my previous review as well has still not been reviewed and is something that irritated me a little: every time one wants to enter the hotel one has to ring the doorbell and wait for the door to be opened. The room key should be able to give you access. As a result there is no way of entering the hotel without the manager being aware of it which also means he will always be there to welcome to you. Although some may interpret this as good hospitality personally I am not always in the mood to make conversation and would prefer to walk to my room uninterrupted and/or without the need to be friendly. Service otherwise is excellent in this hotel and the staff will go out of their way to arrange things as best they can.

Room Tip: If you can live without the ocean view it makes much more sense to go for the rooms in the back whic...

Room small, the whole hotel doesn’t look as modern (pictured) on booking.com
Overpriced for this room.

We stayed two nights there.

• Liked — Good Wifi connection. Clean. Quiet. Reasonable fare 300 Rs. from the hotel to Railway Station with air-conditioned mini-cab. Friendly staff.

• Disliked —

The room was OK.

No lift / No elevator.

Location is not really that good because the shops, railway station and nice restaurants are not within walking distance.

Not great neighborhood, nothing really close by to eat. Staff was very helpful and friendly.

Room we stayed was clean, but there was no direct sea view (side view).

There was no blanket.

The TV did not work and was even in Russian language which we managed to change into English. But it still didn’t function.

• Tip: as the room rate for this hotel is overpriced, we would prefer to pay 50 USD more (or even more) for a ‘’real star hotel’’. This hotel is definitely not considered as any boutique or star hotel by us. We both studied in hotel management school in Switzerland and are currently working in this industry…

If you book earlier, you can get really good deal of staying in REAL five star hotels which have REAL nice sea view, great location, decent bars, pool, fitness, etc.
From those 5 star hotels, you can easily walk to the beach and downtown. And they are not much more expensive than this Ocean Front Hotel. The beach is totally different!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with direct sea view if there is any.

I'd strongly recommend this hotel for both business and leisure travelers. It's centrally located (just off Galle Road in Kollupitiya, close to restaurants, shopping, offices, etc.), overlooking the sea, with nice and tastefully-furnished rooms (generally everything bright and light), good common areas (including rooftop bar & Jacuzzi, as well as lots of little corners to sit in/have meetings in). The huge and well-cooked meals (both Sri Lankan and Western options) should most definitely be mentioned, and the service is definitely above and beyond "normal" hotel helpfulness and friendliness. Wifi is pretty fast. And at a decent price (less thanUSD 100 for single B&B). It's relatively small, so you avoid that "big impersonal hotel" feeling: definitely lots of personal service and thoughtful touches. A solid thumbs up from me - will also be using it in the future as a place to put up my business and official guests .

Spent 5 nights in this small and friendly Hotel witch was a great choice for us, for a short stay because of the location and the staff. Our main subject was shopping and sightseeing both we have done well thanks to Shanta and his team who's were never getting tired of our questions about where to go what to do and always tried to help us in and out of the Hotel.
The real value of this hotel is the staff and the Jacuzzi what we used every afternoon, loved to watch the train in the morning on the sea side running, want to go back later this year to Sri Lanka and we will stay here again, thanks to all of the staff at the Ocean Front. Miki & Rose
