We arrived after our 10 hour flight from the UK, the room wasn't quite ready so the manager took us to the buffet resteraunt for a free buffet lunch it was fantastic! What a start to our holiday! When we got to our room it was fantastic, the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in,and I've slept in quite a few! We had an Ocean sea view room, on the 7th floor views where fantastic, the room had everything you could want just perfect.and when you stay at this hotel youMUST visit the sky lounge!!!!!! The views are breath taking a top class hotel

Room Tip: Try and get a sea view room 5th floor plus,

I stayed in the Kingsbury 3 days during a business trip to Colombo in Feb 2014. The hotel looks very nice with its colonial style, but for business that's it, nothing beyond the looks.
The lobby is always crowded with loads of tourists. If you want to have a conversation with business partners, you better go somewhere else, because between the noise caused by the tourists and the loud music, there's no way to hold a conversation.
The rooms are clean and well furnished but very small, even at club floor where I was staying. There's only a small desk with a nice looking but uncomfortable chair, not exactly conducive for relaxed work. The desk has only 1 single power plug.. if you need to charge your computer and phone(s) at the same time, go and find another plug around the room. The worst of all is the internet.. free for the club floor (I'm not sure if it's free for other rooms) but absolutely useless!!! because the speed sucks! I've stayed at other hotels in Colombo where the speed was 1-2Mb (free connection), so it's not a problem with internet in Colombo but with the Kingsbury. Because of that, I couldn't work at all while at the hotel during my stay.
The 'club'.. well the club is just pathetic.
It opens for breakfast with the standard fare for a club floor, nothing to complaint about that. The problem is that breakfast aside it only offers a extremely limited assortment of snacks and drinks during 2 hours in the evening. There are other hotels in Colombo with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks all day around.
The breakfast downstairs has a huge selection, but the quality is not that good and service really sucks. Regional dishes are watered and lack flavour. Maybe made so to cater for a tourist crowd not used to spicy flavours.. As for the service: day one, ordered coffee and it took 20min to arrive.. Day 2, it never came.
On the day of checkout, my colleagues and I were in a rush, so before going upstairs to change and finish packing we told reception to prepare our bill. When we came down 30min later, the bill was not ready and we had to wait 15min.
In summary.. if you are staying as a tourist, the Kingsbury should be fine, but if you go on business to Colombo, stay somewhere else as I will do in my next trip.

Stayed at The Kingsbury for 4 nights and 4 days and had an excellent time
Room service is extremely good and very quick. Loved the room and the bathroom for its simple interiors and well chosen amenities.

The sky bar is a super experience...

A few negatives about the place is that there are only 2 lifts in the huge property. So every time I had to go up or down, the wait would be very tiresome. Further my room had a parapet view.. Wish the parapet was painted

We stayed three days and it was a nice comfortable hotel, the weather was not great, very cloudy so was not great to stay at the pool, the pool was nice but not a very nice view at the moment. They apparently have a lot of private parties and weddings at this hotel so it was not as great for us guests as we couldn't use some of the restaurants or tables even at the pool area. The room was nice, big, bed was comfortable and the bathroom was nice. Room service was also good.
The location is good as there's some nice restaurants and spa around. The staff is friendly but very busy, very crowded.
Overall it was a nice stay.

We stayed 1 night at each end of our tour around Sri Lanka. We found the hotel quite grand on the ground floor. It has a nice outlook to the sea but it is not a swimming beach. The outdoor area has a nice ambience about it with a good sized pool and bar. If I had any complaint would be the steps between the bar and pool are quite big. The staff were all good and the rooms that we stayed in were great, clean and the beds were comfortable. It was an easy walk into the shopping area and you could always get a taxi if it was too hot to walk.

We stayed for 7 days.
Nice hotel by the ocean, friendly staff, nice room, good food, nice infinity pool, close to shopping, restaurants, temples, etc.
Staff resolved any issues that came up.
Not enough lounge chairs around the pool, no parasols for dining tables at the Water Scape lounge.
Only 2 elevators for a 250 room hotel?
Not enough selection of necessities at the convenience store "Haymart".
There is a construction site right in front of the infinity pool for which we were not informed.
A lot of people outside the hotel all the time wanting to take you to gem stores or other attractions.
After a while it gets very annoying.
Overall I would still recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Do not chose a room facing the infinity pool because there is a construction site on that side.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! Two young girls, we came from staying at the Heritance Ahungalla hotel where the service and staff were impeccable almost to the point where they made you feel like an extended family they would do everything in there power ensure that your stay was comfortable. NOT at The Kingsbury. If you are not from Sri Lankian they treat you like you are dirt, way too many black jacketed middle managers milling around being busy-bodies.

THE HORROR STORY- We arrived back to our room after a day at the pool to find my wedges had been ripped apart from the soles and tampered with. Upon informing managers all five of them came up to our room all guns blazing! HIGHLY INTIMIDATING with security only to blame us and not there staff, My question why would a staff member do that? We felt unsafe and they informed us that there staff wouldn't do that! BLAMING THE CUSTOMER. They refused to pay me to fix my shoes instead was rude and laughed the matter off! they claimed that they would get my shoes fixed when in fact all they did was super glue them together! In the morning when finally checking out as walking to the lift the house keeper apologised to me for breaking my shoes! AND THEY TOLD US THAT THERE STAFF DON'T DO THINGS LIKE THAT! security made us empty our suitcases as we felt scared in case staff tried to fill my shoes with drugs. This was the worse experience of my life. For two young girls to experience what we wen't through is unforgivable.

POSITIVES Room was very good, the pool area fine for a city hotel, and The Ocean food delicious. The SkyLounge is a world-class location, and perfect for sundowners. The Pool staff are the only people who are not snobby!
