“Superb Location but Average Experience”
Reviewed 27 June 2010

The Ceylon Continental perhaps enjoys one of the best locations in downtown Colombo, right next to the vast expanse of the ocean and also on the perimeter of an extremely high security zone, given the President's Palance nearby. However, this hotel which severed its tie-up with the Intercontinental Group some time back, has the opportunity to be a far better hotel than what it can currently boast to be.

Given the awesome location, most of the rooms have stunning sea views and the rooms themselves are quite good, though a little cramped given that they are not very spacious. The service is good and the staff friendly, the hotel managers do make a genuine attempt to ensure you have a comfortable stay and for a business trip, the hotel is decent. The pool is nice and big, and the squash courts are a good option to unwind. But the gym is small, stuffy and very rundown, and not in line with the other fancier amenities. The other problem that the hotel suffers from is average food at the coffee shop (especially around lunch time) and limited choice of restaurants. The Indian restaurant is reasonable but the Italian place, with an ideal location next to the sea and with great views, was mysteriously empty and almost shut the two nights I stayed at the place - and no one really knew why ! So for a decent meal if you stay beyond one night, you neccesarily have to head out to town. The lobby is not as big and spacious as you would expect in other 5 star hotels in the city, and the look and feel a little rundown and cluttered. The other small though consequential issue (atleast for business travellers who travel a lot) is the inexplicable absence of any reward / miles program, that even the other local 5 star hotels in Colombo have.

Not a bad place to stay for a 2-3 day business trip, but given the enviable location and the other myriad options in Colombo for work travel, some focus needs to be given to pull up the hotel to global standards.

I arrived in the middle of the night and thought that this hotel was pretty average. Over my 5 day stay I realised that it was anything but averge. The staff were professional but friendly, welcoming, and genuinely interested in caring for thier guests. I was made to feel very much at home. My every need ( or whim) was catered for, and in a very calm and unobtrusive way.

I felt very safe and secure in a strange city far from home.

We booked to stay at this hotel as part of a 16 day business trip and did not even spend 1 night here it was so bad. The hotel is dated and is NEVER a 5 star property, it would struggle to be a 2 star!! The problems started with the airport pick up, it was a disaster, 3 passengers and 4 cases all crammed into a small estate car with a driver who spoke no English. On arrival we were shocked, the hotel is dated and the staff were in shockingly bad uniforms that were dirty and looked 5 years old. The key had the room number taped on to a piece of card. The lift was like something from the 1970's and the rooms were small and dirty. The bed had stains and the pillows were shocking, the bathroom was also dirty. We then sought the management assistance as we advised we would be moving to HILTON, they were shocked and offered us free nights for which we declined. We did move to Hilton which was much better and was at least a good 4 star standard. Please be warned if you are a seasoned traveller and used to 4 or 5 star standards DO NOT consider this hotel, you will regret it!!

Beware Booking this Hotel-

They charge your card for full stay the day you book...the website says thay charge your card for one day...then take months to credit your account...because of this hotel I cancelled my trip to Sri Lanka...felt this was the example I would find there...they still have one day on my credit card and I am having problem getting it back.

I would rate this hotel 10/10 for the location, views from the rooms, food and service.

I was in Colombo for some work second time, with my office colleagues and had stay for 7 days. The view of the ocean from the room was relaxing specially after long working hours. The sound of waves was soothing.

The service was good. We used to have our breakfast everyday at the hotel, which was very nice specially the omlet.

The hotel also has live bands for music lovers. The best part of the hotel is the Indian restaurant Tandoor. Amazing food and ambience.

Nothing to complain about this hotel...
