The Ceylon Continental perhaps enjoys one of the best locations in downtown Colombo, right next to the vast expanse of the ocean and also on the perimeter of an extremely high security zone, given the President's Palance nearby. However, this hotel which severed its tie-up with the Intercontinental Group some time back, has the opportunity to be a far better hotel than what it can currently boast to be.
Given the awesome location, most of the rooms have stunning sea views and the rooms themselves are quite good, though a little cramped given that they are not very spacious. The service is good and the staff friendly, the hotel managers do make a genuine attempt to ensure you have a comfortable stay and for a business trip, the hotel is decent. The pool is nice and big, and the squash courts are a good option to unwind. But the gym is small, stuffy and very rundown, and not in line with the other fancier amenities. The other problem that the hotel suffers from is average food at the coffee shop (especially around lunch time) and limited choice of restaurants. The Indian restaurant is reasonable but the Italian place, with an ideal location next to the sea and with great views, was mysteriously empty and almost shut the two nights I stayed at the place - and no one really knew why ! So for a decent meal if you stay beyond one night, you neccesarily have to head out to town. The lobby is not as big and spacious as you would expect in other 5 star hotels in the city, and the look and feel a little rundown and cluttered. The other small though consequential issue (atleast for business travellers who travel a lot) is the inexplicable absence of any reward / miles program, that even the other local 5 star hotels in Colombo have.
Not a bad place to stay for a 2-3 day business trip, but given the enviable location and the other myriad options in Colombo for work travel, some focus needs to be given to pull up the hotel to global standards.
