The Bodhisattva statue was the main reason I visited the museum. Just for that it is worth visiting. It is a very good collection of artifacts from Sri Lanka's history. The museum even has the last Kandyan king's throne. A large statue of the Buddha welcomes one to the museum--not a good idea to take photos of yourself in front of it. And for goodness' sake do not kiss it!

Nice compound, a typical museum set up by the British Raj... Once the museum closes in the evening (around 5 pm if I remember correctly), you can chill out at Barista within the compound. Barista has good wi-fi connectivity. Besides the Barista also exists a decently priced souvenir shop. A big park is nearby and the entire area (from museum compound to park) is a nice place to hang out.

We visited the museum during our stay at Colombo.More than 130 years old, this museum is well maintained and have an elegant look representing Italian architecture with a large collections and the display goes with a lot of thoughts.. The history, culture and heritage of Sri Lanka was well represented. One can trace the historical lineage with ease. The Buddha idols were beautiful. The best part was the jewels and gemstones display along with the throne of Kandy Kings. We went there on Saturday and a large number of students and onlookers were there and their interest were quite visible. Even though it was crowded and ambiance was great and there were no chaos. The museum was vibrant and not like dusted and empty in some museums we have seen in other places of the globe. The staffs were very helpful. I t was tiring at the end and we were in desperate need of some chairs for rest. This museum is definitely a must for every tourist for the tourists who visit Sri Lanka.

I was pretty enthusiastic, when i got to hear the presence of Colombo National Museum. Right after my breakfast @ Hilton Colombo, I set off to the museum taking a local convenience ( auto ).

The building and infrastructure is good, however, I had a different set of expectations on the contents being displayed at the national museum, considering my previous visits to museums in Kolkata, India and Salarjung Museum in Hyderabad, India.

The displays were okay okay and not too great, however, with no disrespect to the art lovers, you can take a look at it.

The history and culture of Sri Lanka is very well represented, as it is supposed a museum do it...
The tickets are cheap... If you want take some photos you have to pay a permission for that on the entrance.
