You fly to Colombo, take a taxi and enter a calm and peaceful place.
I really liked this hotel, well maybe not call it hotel, a few houses that has been converted to hotel rooms. The Breakfast was nice, dinner was nice, staff helpful. and after a busy day in the caotic that is Colombo, it was great to enter this quiet place.

My 6 year old son and I enjoyed a lovely stay in this charming guesthouse in a quiet little cul de sac not far from the heart of Colombo. The rooms are simply furnished with antiques and the common areas are elegant and comfortable. Our first room had a double bed that was very high from the ground and when I mentioned I was worried that my son would fall out we were immediately moved to a twin room - so if travelling with a young child, please mention this as the hosts are very happy to accommodate special needs. The garden was lush and attractive - a beautiful spot to eat breakfast. My son loved spotting the little squirrels in the trees. Staff were helpful and friendly and can advise and organise day trips and drivers at reasonable rates. No kettles in rooms or bottled water so recommend that if you want to restrict yourself to bottled water, and you arrive in Colombo in the middle of the night, as so many planes seem to, you purchase some on the way from the airport -given this is a small guesthouse and someone's home, the reception is not open late and except for the person showing you to your room, everyone will be asleep (naturally). Actually, contrary to many of the guidebooks, you can actually eat ice and drink table water at many of the good hotels, as they boil and filter the water - just check if in doubt. The food here was first rate. Delicious home made icecream in all sorts of flavours. If you don't stay, I recommend you come for a meal. Also recommend the Gallery Cafe and a shop and potter at Barefoot -both a short three-wheeler ride away

We travelled to Sri Lanka for 16 days as a family, 2 adults, 2 12 year old children and spent 3 nights here in late June. It really is a beautiful oasis amongst the lively, noisy city of Colombo. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with air conditioning and we all loved the lap pool at the end of the day. The staff were friendly and very helpful and we particularly enjoyed the breakfasts and dinners. Our children loved the home made icecreams whilst we enjoyed the cold beers. Would highly recommend.

If your aging but wealthy aunt had a home in the centre of Colombo it would be like this. It used to be a couple of family homes and it still feels like sitting in someone's living room and sleeping in their spare bedroom rather than staying in a hotel - even a boutique one. That said, nor is it a guesthouse cum B&B. In fact, it's something rather unique and rather special. It is comfortable rather than luxurious, authentic rather than synthetic. Special mention must be made of the food. For once, 'home cooking' means what it says. It is a quiet and quietly confident place well worth a visit.

We stayed there for 2 nights and here are our observations:
- green and lots of vegetation, but with mosquitoes
- swimming pool but right in the middle with slippery sides
- classy decor and set up, but lacks comfort - starting from bathroom which got all wet whenever you used the shower to the electronic switches which were all over the place and far from the item connected to, AC was too cold and no AC was really hot, damp and humid room
- Elegant restaurant but very limited options on the menu
- close to city center but still far from it

On an overall this hotel was not worth the money. It has been made beautifully but lacks comfort.

Room Tip: The room in the picture is where we stayed. But is not as comfortable as pretty as it looks.

This guest house oozes charm with a very chilled relaxed atmosphere. Its such a lovely place to stay and retreat to from the hectic pace of Colombo. The rooms are stylish and comfortable and the food is wonderful. It offers so much more than your average guesthouse.

We had a roomy suite and enjoyed our 2 night stay. The best part is the location in a small tropical garden with the Colombo traffic well muted in the distance. Tuk tuks can be organised for transport in to the city centre. There is a great little supermarket/chemist inside the garage only a minute's walk away.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Governor, Hand-written Deed and Peppercorn The year was 1892 and what was known as "Ceylon" was under British rule. Governor Havelock transferred the title to the land (on which the bungalows are built), by a hand-written deed to the Havelock Building Company on the payment of Rs. 1307/- and a Peppercorn. The present owners purchased the properties in the mid 1980's and lived there. The Havelock Place Bungalow was first opened to guests in December 1999. In the city, yet miles away... If you've ever visited the Bungalow, you would have noticed how discreet we have been about our presence. To the casual passer-by, the Bungalow appears to be nothing more than an old colonial home. Only a plaque with the name 'Havelock Place Bungalow' engraved on it, indicates that we are open to guests. No wonder the Bungalow continues to be Colombo's best kept secret! We are conveniently located so if you are in the mood for a visit to the Museum, Independence Square, or Temples, or would like to go on a shopping spree, you can get to your destination in a matter of minutes. It's a jungle. But definitely not the concrete type... When you enter our gates and walk along the paved pathways, you realize you are in an oasis, away from the bustle of the city. Trees are an intrinsic part of the Havelock Place Bungalow experience. You can enjoy your breakfast while watching our garden come alive with a variety of birds and butterflies, or relax on a bench and gaze at the stars as night approaches. The surrounding foliage lends a quiet charm to every part of the Bungalow. Welcome to the Bungalow! ... more   less
