“Budget Accommodation In Colombo.”
Reviewed 25 January 2014

Budget Accommodation In Colombo, dormitory rooms are decent , bedding is good condition, however there is lot of noise coming from the main road due to late night buses and trucks.. Bathrooms not very nice, but are satisfactory. The attached restaurant is providing good meals in clean and sober environment.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

This person has mentioned the fact that the bathrooms are not clean but let me say that the bathrooms were recently refurbished and upgraded. We will submit a photo for your perusal.

The rooms are overpriced but given that Sri Lanka is in general expensive, they aren't so bad. It is nearby Colombo Fort and definitely better than the other lodgings available near the Fort area. There are no attached bathrooms so if your room is a little on the farther side, you'll have to walk. The flooring is all wooden, and while walking the floor underneath emanates creaking sounds. At times, I felt like it will break any moment. Also if you don't have a YMCA membership they give you to a temporary one, which increases the price by another 50 bucks per person.

We have posted about 7 pictures of the recently refurbished bathrooms.
There is a concerted effort to disgrace the YMCA when the reports and comments we get are quite to the contrary.
I will post some of them.

We reached Colombo around 10 PM and didnt have time to find any other places to stay so we reached the YMCA to book a room. Its being refurbished but has some rooms open currently. We took a triple room which was essentially one double room with the balcony converted into another room. The converted room had no fan and a pair of old half broken beds and no mosquito net either. The rooms had no attached bathrooms and we had to walk around 50 metres to reach the shared bathrooms. However since there were very few guests, there was not much trouble.
The staff isnt very helpful , either in terms of giving inputs about places in Colombo or about improving the stay . They dont accept credit cards and payment must be done in advance. The cafeteria serves local cuisine and snacks mostly. The only benefit is its proximity to the Railway station ( 5 mins walk) Overall, would suggest you opt for the YMCA only if youhave no other options or just need to stay over for a night.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 1st floor because they dont have lifts. If you have sleeping bags, you migh...

The YMCA is used as a central point for anyone. When suggesting a location on the website they always refer to a place in relation to the YMCA. That's how famous it is

Rooms are clean although they gave me first a room that was smelly of insecticide but they didn't make any troubles to change it (1550 rupees for a single). Shared bathrooms should be cleaned more often and thorougly but they are OK. Staff is friendly. Location is great.

Of course it is a great location and it is good for more than two nights. The rooms have been refurbished and the high class rooms are akin to a star class hotel and at a much lower price.

I arrived here with my Dutch friend late one rainy afternoon. the entrance was dark and frightened young children. the price seemed high but we agreed because there was no other choice. the dark hallways smelt of noodles and sweat as we walked its corridors. we enetered the murder scene oops i meant our bedroom. i began to weep from how disgusting it actually could be.... then i enetered the bathrooms......... In seven years of traveling i have never seen such a sight, i took many pictures of how bad it was. it made a great story but at the time I contemplated going crazy. Please do not stay here,

For the price I wasn't expecting marvels, but I did expect them to keep their word. Due to arriving at 5 am and having and midnight flight, all I wanted was a bed, somewhere to leave my bag during the day, and to be able to shower before catching my flight.
I was assured over the phone when booking, on arrival (5 am) and at check out (11 am) that it would be no problem to shower after I’d left, as the bathrooms were separate to the rooms.
But when I returned at 8 pm, the man in reception would not let me shower as I didn’t have a room. I told him that I had been promised by 3 different people that it was OK, and he didn’t care. Then he asked for a written document allowing this, which I obviously didn’t have, then he asked for the name of the person who had said it was OK, but I am not in the habit of asking hotel receptionists their names. He was rude and unhelpful, even when I asked if I could PAY to take a shower.
This may sound petty, but anyone who has been to Colombo will know how dirty you are by the end of the day, a combination of sweat, mosquito repellent, sun cream and dust making you feel filthy. And I had a 36 hour economy-class journey ahead of me.
He also caused problems to collect my bag (which I’d paid 400 rupees to leave for the day) as the piece of paper that the morning receptionist had given me wasn’t dated (there was no date box).

The Colombo YMCA has its own rules governing those who occupy rooms. This is true of any hotel or hostel. It is rather silly for a guest to check out of his room and come later and expect to occupy the same room and have a shower.
We believe sensible people with a sound mind will judge those who write ridiculous reports to Trip Advisor.
We welcome constructive criticism and value them and take immediate action to remedy them. Please feel free to write your comments where we will make the YMCA a suitable place where everyone can enjoy our benefits.

Colombo YMCA is terrible. We asked the manager for dorm rooms because we thought the prices were triple the amount that was given in the Lonely planet. When he said all the dorms were booked we got a really bad double room, without bathroom or any decoration. When we said we thought it was to high en the Lonely planet suggested a different price the manager just raged. Later that night we came back and saw that all the dorm rooms were available. The next morning we talked to the manager and in the middle of our discussion he walked away to get lunch. Please go some where else

It does seem that an organised group of people with ulterior motives, are bent on tarnishing the image and reputation of the YMCA by making frivolous accusations and feeding inaccurate information on Trip Advisor.
As a matter of policy, the YMCA caters to everybody, both rich and poor. Where accommodation is concerned there is a wide range of rooms with varying facilities, differently priced to meet the demands of all who wish to use this facility. Of course the recent escalation in the electricity tariffs and enhanced costs of utilities has compelled the YMCA to revise its room rates. Yet, a bunk bed will cost less than US $ 7.5 per night and a temporary membership cost less than US $ 50 cts.
What is of pertinence is that the entire hostel has been refurbished to ensure overall cleanliness and provide for a range of facilities that were hitherto unavailable.
Those who wish to make a fair assessment are cordially invited to visit us and ascertain for themselves the transformation that has taken place for the benefit of those who wish to use the facilities provided by the YMCA
