Marian's Guesthouse
Ranked #1 of 22 Dushanbe B&B and Inns

The guesthouse makes for a very commfortable stay. Some of the services that I appreciated most were the free on-call driver, free laundry, free internet, extensive library, ... these all make it a very good spot to plan onward travel or recover from a long journey. The breakfast was also great, with lots of fresh produce and eggs cooked on the spot / according to your wishes.
Basically, you get the comfort and the service as if it were a hotel, but with the flexibility and the hospitality of a guesthouse. The price is ok for a capital city and for the level of service and comfort, but there are cheaper options available.
The house is at a central location, but somehat secluded (next to USAID's stronghold). The garden is very beautiful, relaxing and well-kept.

Room Tip: Twin rooms can be a double bed and a guest bed, which is not a real twin. Better ask beforehand if y...

I stayed at Marian's for three days while on a business trip in Central Asia. The guesthouse is centrally located yet tucked away from the street behind high walls (with 24-hour security). The house and gardens are lovely and the staff are very friendly. I really enjoyed eating breakfast every morning with people from different parts of the world. Marian's is a wonderful alternative to the old or (partially) renovated Soviet hotels and the sterile Hyatt in Dushanbe.

P.S. The only reason I give Marian's 4 stars rather than 5 is the bed...it was quite firm and not the most comfortable for me. However, the excellent service, beautiful surroundings, and relaxed atmosphere easily compensate for an imperfect bed.

Reading the reviews, I appear to have stayed in a totaly different hotel! Perhaps these travellers will accept poor standaards for a lot of dollars.

On entry ( no signadge of any description, even when you are outside the gates!) the garden looked overgrown. Plenty of gardeners, but all they seem to be doing was water it. A lot of weeding would't go amiss.
The pool was thick with green algae and unuseable. The bed in the room sagged in the middle, and the bathroom fittings were coming off the wall.
The breakfast was bland and repetitive (Compare this with the delicious breakfasts at Asia mountains in Bishkek)

The one tv was in the lounge and, though there was a pile of video's, I had to get the guards to find a video unit to hook up, with wires across the screen.

At $124 dollars a night, this guest house is ludicrously overpriced. I got the impression that this place was started with great enthusiasm, but now the novelty has worn off and it has just been left for local staff to run the place, it is now very tired.

I have stayed at the Marian’s for three times now and I love coming back to this place again and again. I just have a feeling that I am at home while I am at the Marian’s. The place has some inviting charm in it. The gardens are beautiful with colorful flowers and the setting is lovely with a relaxing atmosphere. The location is also good. You can just walk to the market area, restaurants and stores. The services provided are great here. The rooms are clean and tidy with comfortable beds. The bathroom is good with adequate toiletries. The food served is excellent. You feel like you are eating home food with a five star standard touch in it. One is sure to feel cozy and comfortable here. I certainly recommend this place to anyone.

Ah Marian's Guesthouse ....

I stayed here for some days while in town for work. In summary, the place has character and you will meet very interesting people at breakfast, which was, in summer 2010, cooked up by a very sweet woman who made delicious Russian-style breakfast foods.

For the most part it is a pretty comfortable place to stay but it certainly has "character" or some slightly rough edges, depending on your perspective.

The rooms vary in size, have different names, and feature the large window treatments popular in Tajikistan. I would avoid the room next to the front door as it is smaller than some and can be a bit noisy if people are having conversations in the hallway.

I did have some issues: a roach-like insect crawled across my pillow one evening (unclear whether it was a garden insect or a roach) and the hot water was a bit spotty. The internet is slow, but it is slow in the entire country so I am not sure what Marian can do about it.

There are some nice details - fresh water bottles in the rooms every day, free laundry service, free ride service to points around town in the evenings, satellite TV in the living room, air-conditioning units in the rooms, three resident cats, etc. The garden is lovely, but the pool looked a bit murky to me. After some more time in Tajikistan, I am sure I would have jumped right on in.

In the time I was there I met a guy who had ridden his bike across Tajikistan, several people heading to or from Afghanistan for work, missionaries taking their holidays, and an ambassador from a small nation purportedly there to open diplomatic relations between his nation and Dushanbe, amongst others. Then there is the "long-term" resident mentioned in another review. He won't bother you as he pretends not to speak English to the other guests.

Would I stay here again, absolutely. But is it the Hyatt, most certainly not.

Whenever I travel to Dushanbe, Marian's Guesthouse is the place I want to stay. It is conveniently located in the centre of Dushanbe, close to shops and restaurants. The house is surrounded by a beautiful garden, has a swimming pool (summer months) and is guarded 24/7. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast, Wifi, airport transfer and laundry services are included in the price and if needed, a driver is available after office hours. Very important: there is always hot water and electricity, even if the latter is rationed in other parts of the city. Typical for a guesthouse, breakfast is served a large dining table where one can meet other guests. The living room has Sat TV and DVD for guests to be used. The guesthouse has only 8 rooms, so booking in advance is absolutely necessary. The guesthouse also arranges for airport pickup and facilitation to pass customs controls. It is the perfect place both for short and long stays. The personal touch makes me feel at home.

I've stayed at Marian's for years, and have always loved it. You can have meetings in the garden, go for a quick swim in the morning, and you always get fresh coffee. One time when I had a lot of work, I specially came a day early: working at the desk facing out on the garden was just ideal.

A couple cautions for the winter though. There's a long-term resident on the second floor who believes that opening all the hallway windows in the morning is healthy, no matter the time of year. The cold gets through the room's doors pretty easily, so I was freezing, and quite indignant that in a country where there's barely enough energy to keep people alive through the winter, someone would be so wasteful. So, next time, I stayed downstairs. But I have cat allergies, and Marian's has a lot of cats: lovely cats, but not allergy-free.

One other problem: the internet has become quite slow, to the point that Skype is not feasible: another thing to think about.

So ask for a downstairs room if its cold and you aren't allergic to cats. If you are, you might want to winter elsewhere, but definitely come back when the garden is in bloom
