“Old Soviet Monster, good and bad”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2012

Staff (mostly Russian) was not smiling. Not rude, just indifferent.

The room was large and fairly clean, though the curtains hadn't been washed in a long time.

King size bed, very comfortable.

The air conditioning worked for a few hours in the evening and stopped completely during the night.

We did not have any hot water, so we called for help and were told to let the water run for 10-15 minutes to get it hot. It worked.

The wc flush did not work properly.

Breakfast was adequate. Funky room. 1950.

I'll go to another hotel next time I'm in town

Is it the nicest or most luxurious hotel in Tashkent? No. But the Hotel Uzbekistan offers one unique characteristic -- nostalgia. It was once an official hotel, during the Soviet era. Although remodeled and updated, it still has some of the flavor of the old days. For example, each floor has a huge elevator lobby area, where the floor monitor used to check on the activities of the guests. The cavernous dining room is also used for special functions such as weddings, as evidenced by the elaborately carved and gilded chair standing on a raised dais, with column wrapped in white satin. I found the hotel to be quite adequate, the staff helpful and friendly, the room was spacious, although a bit worn. The location is good, right on Timur Square.

first the ladies from the reception are rude and messy - they booked for our rooms other travellers and gave them keys to our rooms, many people from our group got the keys for rooms that had been already taken!
rooms need immediate rennovation
food is tasteless, breakfast buffet is extremly limited, service slow

Hotel Uzbekistan is an hotel with spacious rooms, clean and ensuite toilet and shower of perfect quality.
The food in the hotel is ok and there are several bars/restaurants.
Internet is possible and you can use internetcomputers in the business centre of the hotel on the third floor.
Almost every night of the four I stayed in hotel Uzbekistan, a marriage was going on, which gave a nice atmosphere.
The staff is friendly and the service perfect.
Breakfast is very good.

This monstrous Soviet monolith gets a pretty bad press from some reviewers, but we stayed there a week ago and found it perfectly acceptable. It is true that some rooms smell a bit strange (smoking is permitted) and that some of the carpets and furniture have seen better days. It is also true that the staff initially seem slightly offhand. In answer to the first complaint, it is worth remembering that for all its size and apparent grandeur, it is still only a three star hotel - nothing more. In answer to the second comment, Uzbeks, like Russians (I believe but have never been there) are not natural smilers. They tend to nod or do nothing instead, but underneath all that they are kind and generous people. Westerners often find people from other cultures unfriendly at first, but that is because of cultural differences, and in that area, nobody is wrong. The room we had was extremely spacious, clean and nearly everything worked as it should have. (The telephone wouldn't give me an automatic alarm call as it should have done, but the efficient staff at reception did so instead.) The staff in the cafe/bar on the ground floor couldn't have done more for us, and there were plenty of smiles there. The breakfast in the huge, anti-imperialistic dining room was excellent if more Uzbek than international (what do you expect?) Lastly, for the money, any hotel as well situated as this one is worthy of serious consideration. Anyway, it's almost like staying in a little piece of history...

Room Tip: Try to get a room with an even number - we think that you will then have a stunning view over the pa...

I have nothing against reasonably priced Soviet style monster hotels, but this one was worse than I could imagine.
Starting from the unfriendly staff (with the exception of one girl out of 10 I met), old hardly functional furniture in the rooms, constant problems with shower and sink (clogging) hence unpleasant smell, dirty carpets, too much noise from the weddings every day and having a massage cabinet right next to your room (mind you, massage cabinet can mean different things in Central Asia) and ending with wifi available only in the lobby and only some hours a day, it all makes a stay in hotel Uzbekistan quite unpleasant.

Breakfast is so-so, but not unbearable.

The only positive thing would be the location, right next to Amir Timur square and the subway, so no problem to move around the city.
