Best Eastern Poytaht Hotel

We stayed for four nights on the way to the Kazakhstan v England football match in Almaty. On the flight from London the airline lost my baggage, so I was not best pleased when I arrived at the hotel with absolutely nothing. However, the front desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful, even calling my mobile when I was out on trips with news of my luggage. I and my partner had one room, which was an entire suite, with sitting room and bedroom. Our friend just had a normal hotel room but all were clean and above average for the standard, anywhere, not just in Uzbekistan. The location is great and the whole experience was much better than I had expected. Would definitely recommend it for a stay in Tashkent.

The Poytaht lived up to and exceeded all expectations for an Uzbekistan hotel except for two items: one, the promised WiFi did not work for the entire duration of both our stays (leading us to suspect that this "temporary" problem is a bit more than temporary) and two, the breakfast staff were two or three notches below the quality compared to the excellent front desk staff. With regards to the first problem, this was somewhat ameliorated by the presence of an occasionally open 'business center' with 4 internet-connected PCs and a young female attendant whose taste in clothes needs to be seen to be believed (hot pink leather pantsuit complete with stiletto heels seemed to be her norm).

We paid $70 per night per couple and got one of the larger rooms (judging by the emergency evacuation chart). If that chart was truly to scale, then some of the smaller rooms are truly quite small - most seemed to be about half of our room's size. The bedroom was fine, including a TV with a few international channels and a heat/ac unit that we could ourselves control - if this sounds minor, then you have not yet spent the nights shivering in even top-quality ex-USSR hotels where the staff tries to save a few pennies by "forgetting" to turn on the heat.

The bathroom was large and clean, though beware of the 60cm or so drop from the shower/bathtub to the floor. I can't imagine that somebody hasn't yet broken their neck there. For security reasons, we do not have our rooms made up ever, but I saw the staff at work on other rooms and they seemed to be doing a nice job.

Location: what can you say. Yes, you are the center of the center of Tashkent, so to speak. But, this hardly matters when the area all around turns into a ghost town after 9pm or so and taxis as so cheap as to be free anyway. Arguably, the area around the "Grand Mir" is a little more livelier, but it really doesn't matter. There is a nice shopping mall about 5 minutes walk away - we've been told that it's one of the swankiest in Tashkent. You may find the supermarket there useful.

Recommended hotel. If we ever had to visit that city again (and arguably there's not much in Tashkent to see twice), we'd be happy with the Poytaht.

Very much recommended. Very clean. I had a great room, but there is considerable (size, location) difference among the rooms. Friendly and English-speaking staff (except the "business centre" lady who was obviously not working there because of her technological or other knowledge). Soem rooms are better situated for WIFI (close to the elevators is OK) then others. The reception can give youa wifi password but then you have to find a mysterious man (ask for "computer guy") who can tell you how to actually operatae WIFI. Restaurant is also OK (but of course time-consuming and more expensive than outside but still recommended). Bar showed rather explicit porn movie one night? Hotel pool was not filled (well too cold anyway).

Hotel Poytaht would be a good hotel anywhere, let alone in Uzbekistan. Nothing was too much effort for the friendly and efficient staff. The clean, spacious rooms were good value. The in-hotel travel agent saved us a great deal of hassle in booking our onward trip at a very reasonable price that we were glad to pay.

The hotel is well-situated in the city centre. My friend mentioned noise as an issue with her room, but I was not disturbed.

Hotel staff remained helpful when we wanted to use their facilities on our last day in the country, even though we were not staying in the hotel that night.

Definitely recommended.

We spent two night at the Poytaht, one night at the start of our trip and one night at the end. Both of our stays were excellent. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and spoke excellent English. The rooms are huge and very clean. Despite the fact that both of our departures were early in the morning, arrangements were made for breakfast. One morning we were served in the dining room and the other morning a room service tray was brought to us. We also enjoyed the location and were able to walk to many locations.

Uzbekistan hotels aren't good; but this one is far better than most, because of or in spite of its Russian management style. Everything seems to work. The front desk staff seem devoted to helping you. The place pulls in a lot of meeting and conference business - an important measurement of quality to those easily seduced by the lure of self-proclaimed "boutique" hotels, which in Uzbekistan should be avoided like the plague until you've checked the drains. A perfectly good 3-star hotel with a 24-hour bar offering take-out sales. Didn't have dinner there so can't comment on the restaurant, except to say that breakfast was adequate and could be better if coffee wasn't instant. Nestle seem to have the Central Asia market sewn up.

Great location. Likely stopping place if, God forbid, I am ever back in Uzbekistan.
