“Won't stay here ever again!”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

We stayed at this hotel for 5 days, and it was quite a terrible experience to say the least. Situated on a historic and pleasantly beautiful street, the hotel operates under a distressed management. We arranged airport pickup, but no one showed up to pick us up. We had to call them to remind about our arrival. Not a great start!

About the rooms:
We booked 3 rooms, 2 months in advance, however, upon arrival, they couldn't find our reservation and to make it up for it, they upgraded us to their suite room for a night. Hence, we had to repack and move into their double room the next day- we were exhausted from the night the night before! The rooms were just average with queen-size beds in a double room. Our nights weren't that comfortable.

Other facilities:
The aircon never worked, and despite countless complaints (even at 4am!), it was unsatisfactory. I sweated the whole time whilst staying indoors. WiFi was another issue! It kept logging us out after every 5 minutes and the connection was extremely poor.

In-house restaurants:
We were very disappointed with the breakfast- it was just mediocre, and the terrace restaurant wasn't that great. Although, the view was spectacular.

Staff:
The staff was strictly OK, except the boy in the evening who was ever smiling and courteous. Most of them couldn't convsere or understand English, except just 2. I happened to eavesdrop another couple complaining pretty much about the same issues which we had endured during the stay.

To deduce, I will not stay here again. Not even in a million years! :-)

Room Tip: Even after reading my honest review, you decide to stay in this god-awful hotel, take a room on the...

We booked the British Airways flight and hotel deal. I didn't expect to find the room small despite the reviews as we've stayed in a lot of European hotels... it possibly was the same size as others we've stayed in but the layout meant that you couldn't get to one side of the bed without turning side on and edging between the dresser and the bed which isn't so pleasant when you need the bathroom in the night.

We possibly had the worst room - windows right onto the main passageway of the hotel and no outdoor view/windows. The bathroom had a tiny bath but no plug (for either the bath or the basin) which was kind of annoying. The air conditioning worked fine. There wasn't really a blanket, just a thin, rough bed spread so not very comfortable for sleeping if you are used to a duvet.

We thought the breakfast was quite good - mostly Turkish food but seemed reasonable quality. We also liked the food in the restaurant but the service was a bit overbearing for us. The hotel service was quite good.

The location is tricky - it's good because it's close to the main attractions and tram but because it's on a street full of restaurants (great when you want to eat), you can't step outside without being hassled by the pushy staff on the street.

Overall, we had a pretty good stay. I'm not sure what the price was as we were on the deal but I think British Airways advertised this as four star and I would say it's more like three star.

The Byzantium Hotel is a clean hotel and well run. The food at breakfast and in the hotel restaurant was excellent with plenty of choice. The staff were very friendly and very helpful with any queries we had. Nothing was too much for them they were there to please and make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The hotel is also very close to all the main attractions and the harbour. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is interested in visiting Istanbul.

Room Tip: The hotel has a lift to all floors plus a staircase if you want extra exercise.

The hotel is situated on a lovely street full of restaurants and cafés. The hotel itself is good. Breakfast ok . Don't know why the scrambled eggs were so watery? They have excellent cappuccino at breakfast so don't miss it. The rooms were smallish with narrow bed. The air conditioning had some problem and was not working in two of four rooms we had. The staff is pleasant with good spoken English. Location is very good with a short walk to all major locations.

Booked this hotel by looking at other people's reviews and I have to say I was not disappointed.

The location is absolutely brilliant. Right in the heart of all the restaurants and bars. The staff are very friendly especially the front desk.

The view from the terrace is amazing, looking right over the golden horn and the blue mosque.

Can not fault this place. Will definitely stay here again.

Went with British Airways for a 3 night break. The hotel is in a good location in the old town just a short walk to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Big Bus tour main stop. Check in was quick and the room allocated was at the back of the hotel which suited us as it was quieter. Took my own travel kettle but didn't need to as there was a kettle in the room. Bathroom was great, good shower over bath and complimentary toiletries and slippers. This hotel is not modern but quaint. They also offer you a complimentary non alcoholic drink to be taken on their terrace at the top of the hotel which had a nice view. Didn't put TV on so cannot comment on that. Breakfast - well not to my taste however plenty of choice of cold meats etc. I just had a small plate of scrambled eggs and coffee (which wasn't very good!) Overall if I went back to Istanbul I wouldn't hesitate in staying at this hotel again. Also plenty of restaurants in the same road so after a day of sightseeing not far to go to get something to eat and drink.

Room Tip: Stayed on the 4th floor at the back of the hotel which was very quiet.

Great little hotel , the area was perfect near many major sights , Blue Mosque Hagia Sophia etc ,easy walk to everywhere we wanted to go .Istanbul is such a lovely interesting city.
The room we had was very clean and kept well and any minor problems or questions we had were dealt with straight away.
The comment I would make to help you make a decision if you want a room for 3 is the room we were given was on the groundish floor , no view, the window was on to a very small courtyard which was of no interest , so room dark , the pic on the website had made the room look bigger than it was, having said that we had the room for the weekend and were happy with it as we were only in it to sleep. So I would ask for a view if you would prefer that .It was comfortable and convenient for the dining room which provided a buffet, which if you were staying longer than 3 nights would I think be boring , I have to say for a buffet the scrambled eggs were fantastic, the service was good .
The roof terrace had a lovely view and we had 2 really good meals there with good service., much better than another place we had eaten in on their terrace . The advantage of the byzantium one was it had both a covered area and and outside area .
The staff were very helpful the guest service was good .
The only problem we had was we used the hotel transport to pick us up from the airport , it was ok at first then the guy who was organising us vanished and we waited ages about 40 -50 mins before we left for the hotel which is not fun at 1am! We told the hotel about this so I hope they spoke to the company they used about it they said they would.
We had a really good stay and if we go back to istanbul I would not hesitate to use this hotel again.
Good value for money , booked via BA holidays .
