“Great location for no frills sightseeing”
Reviewed 22 May 2013

The Big Apple classes itself as a hostel, however we booked a double with private en-suite room for £60 a night. The room was a reasonably size, very clean and made up everyday. It felt more like a hotel, I peeked into the dorms also very nice. I felt really safe here, they have security cameras on each floor. The location ıs fantastic, 5 minutes to the Blue Mosque etc, 15 to the Grand Baazar. Its just off a main street of Turkish bars & restaurants which are good for a night out but you'll get a peaceful nights sleep back at the Big Apple. The real highlight is the roof terrace with a view of the Blue Mosque & Bospherus. They serve a breakfast spread up here (included ın the price) but İ loved spending an hour in the afternoon reading my book, I even managed a cheeky nap! The only thing missing for us was the social side you normally get in a hostel.

GOOD FOR: No frills sightseeing
THE UGLY: Lack of hostel run social activities

At about £30 a night each we got a double room at Big Apple. We used their shuttle service to collect us from the airport (he was waiting for us at the airport) and the friendly reception staff have been helpful for booking excursions.
The roof terrace is great for the breakfast in the mornings although the breakfast spread is ok but fairly unremarkable. Boiled eggs were the highlight.
The best thing about Big Apple is the location. It's a 5 min walk from The Blue Mosque and Sofia and maybe 15mins from The Bazar. It's not as lively as other hostels in the area but you can always drink in the others then retire back here. Thoroughly recommended.

We came to this hotel for 3 nights .... A bit more expensive than our previous hotel in the same area. Staff were very good and wanted to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of veggies, fruits, eggs, etc. my only suggestion: Mehmet, could the hotel buy a coffee brewing machine -would be a very nice addition to your breakfast room. Rooms were adequate size and clean. This hotel had a top- floor breakfast room that was available to guests all the time ... At the end of the day, we could go upstairs and purchase a beer or other drinks which was great for relaxing and talking with other travellers, and the view was great! More young people at this hotel, although it is not really a hostel ... It is a hotel. Nice mix of young, old, families, from many nations. The location is very central to the important sites to see in Istanbul, and you can reach it by taking the rail from the airport to Zetinburnu station then changing to the tram and going to Sultanahmet station and getting off for the short walk to the hotel. Everyone is very helpful in assisting (and they'll try and get you into their family's carpet shop on the way)

Room Tip: The rooms on the street tend to be a bit noisy, as the street is busy early and in the evening there...

It's not a Hostel, doesn't have the nice environment from a Hostel, it's more like a hotel with families and old people. NOT party hostel as mentioned on the Hostel description. Breakfast is nice, location is EXCELLENT, 5 minutes walking from the Blue Mosque. Staff don't speak english, so they don't help that much on organizing the day.

This hostel is absolutely amazing! The staff is so helpful with everything and with setting up daily activities around the city, there is a very affordable airport shuttle service, and it's in an extremely convenient location. The Blue Mosque is right in your back yard! Everything in Old Town is about a five or ten minute walk from the hostel. I cannot recommend this place enough for future travelers!

Dearest guest, thank you very much for your feedback. I am terribly sorry that the TV in your room was not working during your first stay. Our staff was trying to fix it when we clean the room, but the TV actually needed to send back to the the shop for fixing. It took few days to return it to the hostel. There are two plasma TV at the lobby and the terrace for guests. I hope you understand that this was not an usual case in our hostel. Upon your second stay with us, we provide your family with another room and with a discounted price. I hope you found your second stay was pleasant with us. We welcome you to come back again and we will always serve you better. Warm regards, Mehmet Bingöl.

We spent a week long vacation in Istanbul, stayed one night in a dinky matchbox cell @ the second home hostel, then switched and stayed in this hotel for a whole week. Its location, friendly and not pushy staff, big clean and well kept rooms (we stayed at 401 and 304), nice breakfast and beautiful views from the breakfast terrace, in combination with the price (30-35 euro) for which you only get real dives in other hotels/hostels of that area, all make it by far the optimal choice for a nice stay in Istanbul - not comparable to the other places we've seen in any way. We warmly recommend it and would definitely go back there on our next visit.
